The Sounders say they are down to “a limited number” of tickets remaining for their Wednesday match with Real Salt Lake. “Limited” isn’t all that precise a term, but if they fill their normal seating capacity of around 36,000 that would represent the eighth-largest playoff crowd in MLS history.

Here’s the list and some additional info from the club:

The two largest crowds for MLS Cup Conference Semifinals or Finals have been produced by Sounders FC fans. However, there might be room for more. In 2009 Seattle attracted 35,807 for its first postseason match and last year, despite playing on Halloween, there was another sellout of 35,521 (the fourth-largest MLS Cup final crowd of 46,011 was also in Seattle in 2009).

In 2011 Sounders FC set another season record for attendance, averaging 38,496. In the final home regular season game the crowd of 64,140 was the third-largest crowd for a single match in MLS history.

The 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final attendance of 35,615 set a record for the 98-year-old tournament. Seattle supporters accounted for two of the top three and four of the 13 biggest attendances in the CONCACAF Champions League preliminary and group stage matches. The crowd of 21,233 for the preliminary round win over Panama’s San Francisco FC on August 3 was the largest of the tournament.

The top 10 attendances for MLS Cup Playoffs are as follows:
61,316 10/20/2002 Final LA vs NE Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, Mass.
57,431 10/26/1997 Final DC vs COL RFK Stadium, Washington, D.C.

  1. Why is CenturyLink Field on that list? That name didn’t exist until this year.

They can name it what they want, but revising history…well, that’s something a reporter should probably catch and fix. ;)
