Electricity kits going; something as divisive coming

Sounders FC will wear its “electricity” yellow kit for what is expected to the final time Tuesday, when the club concludes CONCACAF Champions League group play with a visit from Monterrey.

But for those who say “good riddance” to the eye-searingly bright uniforms comes a word of warning that the club already has settled on a new alternate kit for next season. And while they’re not ready to be unveiled, general manager Adrian Hanauer implied they could be every bit as controversial as the ones they’re replacing.

“What I can say is that just like the electricity, it will be divisive,” Hanauer said. “Some people will love it. Some people will hate it. It is not going to be gray. Other than that, people have to wait until it leaks.”

The Sounders haven’t decided when they will unveil the new uniforms.

However, they will become the fifth distinctly different jersey the club has worn since it first took the pitch in 2009. In addition to the basic rave green, they wore a blue second jersey in their first two seasons, switched to Cascade shale this season and added the yellow third kit in 2010. There also have been some lesser changes in stripes and accents along the way.

“We are set on being a green team – a rave green team,” Hanauer said. “That said, I tend to acquiesce to the branding police within our organization and the retail-operations group and Adidas and those that are better equipped to make the decisions on jersey transitions and how quickly we turn that over. From a personal standpoint, it’s always exciting to me to see the new designs; and Adidas seems to keep coming out with hits for us, so that’s fantastic. I’m sure there are some fans who would like to see more consistency; some like it that we change them often.”

Tuesday night’s match with Monterrey marks the last likely appearance of Sounders FC in their bright all- neon yellow third kit known as Electricity. For the past two seasons Electricity has been donned for Open Cup and international matches, and for MLS play on occasion. Some of the biggest moments in the club’s history have occurred in the strip appropriately resembling a highlight marker.

Chronologically, among the more memorable matches were the 2010 third-round Open Cup shootout win at Portland; the draw at El Salvador’s Metapan which secured advancement to Champions League group play; the triumph over Columbus for the 2010 Open Cup championship; this season’s comeback victory at Portland and the successful culmination of the Open Cup three-peat by beating Chicago earlier this month. Sounders FC will unveil a new third kit for use beginning in the 2012 season.

    When did we decide that divisive was better than old school and conservative? Argh.

    Plus, it means I can’t wear proper colors to the matches since soccer jerseys are not designed with fat guys in mind and there’s nowhere else you see these colors in the clothing world. :)

    I have two Montero autographed Electricity kits. Both very near and dear to me. I feel our winning percentage in them is quite high – but I’m too lazy to look.

    I for one am sorry to see them go.

    Maybe the jerseys are telling you something, Derek… :)

    I have my complete collection of home and away, long sleeve and short sleeve, but nary an electric- would have preferred pink. But it irks me to have the team in highlighter when we are supposed to be Rave Green.

    Acquiesce, brand police, divisive, and Addidas – all in the one sentence.
    => Prepare for more bra straps.
    We’re starting to see uniform proliferation in Div 1 football, too (Oregon, Boise State, etc). This is in contrast to the merchandise sales leaders in MLB (Yankees) and NFL (Cowboys). No changes there ;-).
    Sadly, the “brand police” always seem to deliver “hits” whenever the team is winning cups and playoff appearances … and credit their designs.
    It’s just the new way for brands to protect margins and minimize the impact of the secondary market … As long as they keep tweaking the sponsor logos on the front, and adding new “features,” everyone will always know when you’re wearing last year’s kit … Great racket … As long as it’s good for league revenues, I guess I can out up with goofy designs.

    I’m going to run for state legislature just so one day I can mess with JKJ for calling me out on my fatness.

    Revenge seems like a bad reason to run for office, but one day… you will rue this exchange JKJ. Oh you will rue it! :)

    Besides, YOU called yourself out on fatness, not me. Or your jersey’s did… :)
