The highly likely has now become fully settled: Sounders FC will finish with the second-best record in MLS and in the Western Conference.
That result was settled tonight when Real Salt Lake played to a scoreless draw at Colorado. That leaves RSL six points behind Seattle with only one game left to play.
Seattle is now certain to open the playoffs Oct. 29 or 30 at the site of the No. 3 finisher in the West: either RSL or Dallas (who is three points behind RSL with one game in hand). That two-game, aggregate-score series will resolve either Nov. 2 or 3 at CenturyLink Field.
Elsewhere in MLS tonight, Houston beat Portland, 2-0. The result does not eliminate the Timbers from the playoff race, but they will need to sweep their final two games as well as picking up considerable help along the way.
