This just in from her alma mater: the University of Washington:

Hope Solo, a former Washington women’s soccer star, who recently helped lead the US Women’s National Team to the Championship Game of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, will be one of 12 celebrities to compete on the 13th season of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars.

Solo will be the sixth female athlete to star in the hit series, following Olympic champion figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi (season 6 champion), Grand Slam tennis champion Monica Seles (season 6), Olympic volleyball player Misty May-Treanor (season 7), Olympic gold medal gymnast Shawn Johnson (season 8 champion), and Olympic gold medal swimmer Natalie Coughlin (season 9). Female athletes have found great success in the competition as two of the previous five have taken home the top prize, winning the entire competition in their respective seasons.

“I have a great fan base,” Solo says. “I also have my critics. It will be interesting to see what happens here.” She continues, “I’m filled with so much anxiety because I have no moves. I’m a pure athlete who is stiff in the shoulders, not loose. We definitely have a lot of work to do.”

Solo was a star on the Huskies women’s soccer team from 1999-2002 and still holds the school records for career goals against average, goalkeeper saves, and goalkeeper shutouts. In the 2011 Women’s World Cup, she made a save on a penalty shootout against Brazil in the quarterfinal, helping the Americans advance to the semifinals. She was also awarded the Adidas Golden Glove as the tournament’s top goalkeeper and was the starting goalkeeper for the United States in their 2008 Beijing Olympics gold medal game win over Brazil in extra time.

She will join fellow athlete, Ron Artest of the Los Angeles Lakers, actor David Arquette, reality-TV stars Kristin Cavallari, Carson Kressley and Rob Kardashian, HLN’s legal analyst Nancy Grace, talk show icon Ricki Lake, war veteran and actor J.R. Martinez, entertainer Chynna Phillips, entertainment legends Sonny and Cher’s son Chaz Bono, and model Elisabetta Canalis.

The celebrities will meet with their partners and begin training, learning either the Viennese Waltz or the cha cha, for the season premiere Monday Sept. 19 at 8 p.m. The first couple, the pair with the lowest combined judge’s scores and fan votes, will be sent home the following night. The couples will perform each Monday and the results show will occur each Tuesday until the season finale on Nov. 22.

Fans can watch Good Morning America Wednesday, Aug. 31, airing at 7 a.m. on ABC, as the season’s celebrity-professional pairs will be revealed.
