Stadium Bowl, now-former home of the Tacoma Tide.
Some very disappointing news today from Sounders FC:

Tacoma Tide FC today announce that they are relocating their last three United Soccer Leagues PDL home matches to Curtis High School’s Viking Field. The matches had all been previously scheduled for Stadium Bowl.

The moved matches are:
July 8 – Vancouver @ Tacoma, Curtis HS, 7:30 PM kickoff (was 7 PM)
July 10 – Abbotsford @ Tacoma, Curtis HS, 2 PM kickoff
July 22 – Crossfire @Tacoma, Curtis HS, 7 PM kickoff

The future of the Tide international friendly match against Port Vale FC, originally also schedule for Stadium Bowl, will be announced at a later date.

“We regret any inconvenience this might cause our fans, families and players,” said Tide owner Mike Jennings of the move. “However, we were not able, after months of trying, to get Tacoma Public Schools to understand our needs as well as to grasp the going rate for stadium rentals in greater Puget Sound. We were led to believe by the district athletic and community partnership offices that they both valued a partnership with us and understood our limitations and were going to work with us to adjust a rental rate appropriate for this region. Unfortunately, we have no agreement and must move on.”

The Tide played their first five seasons at Curtis High School’s Viking Field, a venue where they have a winning record. Tacoma leaves Stadium Bowl having lost a pre-season match, and drawn one while losing four regular season matches, and being outscored on the small pitch 21-6. The club averaged 142 fans per match over one pre-season and five regular season matches at the downtown venue.

This is a total drag. Nothing against Curtis, but Stadium Bowl is right in town — a very short walk from Doyle’s, in fact — and is a Tacoma icon. We went to Tuesday night’s game; I can’t think of a better way to spend $10. The weather was perfect. The game was entertaining enough, enough though the Tide lost 3-1.

And best of all was the serenading from the three die-hard supporters. My favorite: The Gritty Tacoma song (to the tune of ‘When the Saints Go Marching In’):

    Oh Tacoma
    has lots of grit
Oh Tacoma haaas looooots of griiiiit
It’s got museums, beer and arsenic!
Oh Tacoma has lots of grit.

Thanks for the link to this…I hate driving to UP and that whole side of town. Stadium is right off the freeway, next to Doyles, and NOT IN THE MIDDLE OF BFE! Still going to go watch the Port Vale game. Played them on FIFA10, so that’ll be neat to see them live. This is what we miss if we lose these smaller clubs. My cousin and I went nuts when we heard PV was coming.
