Several streaks came to an end tonight, as D.C. United defeated Sounders FC, 2-1.
The result ended a six-game unbeaten steak for the Sounders.

It ended their 3-0 run in RFK Stadium.

And it brought an emphatic end to United’s run of nightmarish defensive performances.

D.C. had come into the game having given up eight goals over its previous two league matches and 11 over its last three competitions.

However, United kept Seattle off the scoreboard through the first 70 minutes. And the Sounders lone goal came on a penalty kick from Brad Evans – his team-leading fourth goal of the season.

The Sounders threatened again after that, most notably from on-goal strikes by Alvaro Fernandez and Fredy Montero. However, D.C. keeper Bill Hamid acrobatically batted each over the crossbar.

That was enough to deliver the win after a pair of D.C. goals, each involving the combination of Josh Wolff and Charlie Davies.

The first came in the 31st minute when Jhon Kennedy Hurtado tried to cut off a pass to Davies, but he missed, giving Davies plenty of space to work with behind him.

Davies caught up to the ball on right side of the penalty area, and just before Patrick Ianni arrived, he rolled it across the box to Wolff, who finished into the open left side from 6 yards away.

What proved to be the game-winner came in the 52nd minute, and this time it was Wolff who assisted Davies, who recorded his MLS-leading sixth goal of the season.

Soon thereafter, Sounders coach Sigi Schmid sent midfielder Mauro Rosales in for defender James Riley in an effort to peck away at the lead.

The breakthrough came in the When Dejan Jakovic knocked down Montero in the box.

Evans walked to the spot and scored his second penalty kick in as many games.

The Sounders threatened thereafter, but couldn’t get the equalizer past Hamid.

The result drops Seattle to 3-3-3 on the season. United climbs to 3-4-1.

The Sounders will travel to Columbus tomorrow; train there Friday and conclude this two-game trip against the Crew at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

I’ll add quotes in a new post above. Meanwhile, here are the unofficial stats:

Referee: Hilario Grajeda
Referee’s Assistants: -Bill Dittmar; Paul Scott

Attendance: 11,254
Time of Game: 1:50
Weather: Partly Cloudy and 52 degrees

77th minute: United subs Fred for Najar.

76th minute: Wonderful headed pass from Levesque down to Montero, whose shot it touched over the bar yet again.

76th minute: Gonzalez in for Fernandez.

73rd minute: Flaco point-blank header just touched over the bar.

71st minute: Brad Evans scores on PK after Montero dumped in the box. United lead down to 2-1.

64th minute: Roger Levesque coming in for Nate Jaqua … seconds after Jaqua missed a goal by about a yard.

59th minute: Rosales in for James Riley … Schmid subbing offense for defense in an attempt to get back into this thing.

52nd minute: GOAL. United 2-0. Davies scores on Wolff assist this time. Davies leads MLS with six goals.

Second half: … has begun. And not all that promisingly for Sounders, who seem back on their heels.

Halftime: United up, 1-0. Also leads on shots, 8-4; and shots on goal, 3-2. TV showing possession time as 50-50, but that had to have shifted after the goal. Until then, Sounders seemed in control, but United dominated after.

Replay showed DC goal really beginning on a missed challenge by Hurtado, leaving Davies alone behind him.

31st minute: GOAL. DC goes up 1-0 as Davies passes to Wolff unmarked at far post. United, 1-0.

First 25 minutes:Sounders dodge pullet with shot left-footed off the near bar. Best scoring chance of the game … if you don’t count the non-call on Fernandez being tackled in the box.

14th minute: Wonderful cross by Tyson Wahl, but resulting shot by Montero goes over crossbar.

13th minute: Yellow card to DC’s White, for a dumb slide into Montero’s legs. Montero appears OK.

Kickoff: Game has begun. Sounders going with GK Keller; D Riley, Hurtado, Ianni, Wahl; M Evans, Alonso, Friberg, Fernandez; F Montero, Jaqua.

Sounders in rave/rave; United in black/black.

Pregame: I’m opening this post in advance of the Sounders-at-DC game at 4:30 p.m. from RFK Stadium and broadcast on KONG and the usual radio outlets.

I might be getting to the blog a little after the game begins, so I wanted to get this ready for you guys to carry on your own discussion. I’ll jump in with blog and Twitter updates as soon as I can get from the TNT offices to in front of my TV.

See you then.

  1. Good to see the DC United supporters turn out…. all 12 of them.

  2. I cannot for the life of me figure out what White was trying to accomplish there. Wasn’t the ball going out?

  3. Sometimes I get the impression that Sigi would rather light himself on fire than do those in match interviews.

  4. EverydayFan says:

    Soft goal :-(
    :-) Great chance for a come-back win!

  5. EverydayFan says:

    Keep out the free kick!

  6. Evans’ cross at the end of the 1st. What. Was. That?

  7. EverydayFan says:

I hope Sigi kicks their you-know-what at half …
    Someone please step up!

  8. EverydayFan says:

It was Montero’s cross, that’s what.
    Feed Evans!

  9. EverydayFan says:

DR – can you paste your tweets into the blog?
I like your commentary, but it I have to hop apps – I want your comments as part of this discussion….

  10. Montero hasn’t done much. I’d take him off and put in Rosales.

  11. EverydayFan says:

We should crush a teamlike this

  12. EverydayFan says:

I didn’t comment about it online, but I was worried when I read Sigi’s comments yesterday, telling the team they were as good as anyone. I thought it was a BLM (bar lowering maneuver) that was sure to take the foot off the gas.
They have 40 mins + stoppage to prove me wrong.

  13. EverydayFan says:

BLM -> Time wasting (and at that)
    Signing off

  14. So I have a thought. Maybe on counters we should find their guys and get close to them as to make crossing more difficult. Seems like it might work. What do you think defenders?

  15. Yeesh. I don’t like the way Montero came down on that wrist.

By the way, interesting that the match after Evans mentions he always puts his PKs in the same spot, keeper goes that way and Evans goes the other. LOL.

  16. They played like I felt today. Just kinda meh.

  17. Don Ruiz says:

Not sure how this is going to look, EF, but:

Frustrating result for Sounders, and they had their chances to salvage something. But the fact is, they just didn’t play well enough to win.

Big half to come f/ Seattle. Good team selection by Olsen, taking Kitchen out of firing line. DC have conceded 1 goal in 2.5 starts by White

Familiar lineup as Sounders kick off at DC

  18. Don Ruiz says:

Meanwhile, over the next week or so I’ll try to put up a blog post asking what’s the best way for me/the TNT to deliver it’s soccer news. Now we’re using mostly blog and tweets, but I can tweek the proportions, or go back to blog only, or go more heavily to Twitter for its interactivity. Give it some thought, and then we can discuss it some.

  19. EverydayFan says:

I LOVE the commentary in the tweets!
Not sure it’s possible, but my thought was to make them individual comments as they happen …. Copy each tweet then paste it into the blog when you send it … I want to comment on the things you’re saying & observing …. (assuming you have time)
…loved the comments about the SSFC fan signs … Too funny!

  20. EverydayFan says:

So, what do you think about it, guys?
I made a comment earlier tonight that we should crush that team (#3 West v. #5 East)?
And what was up with taking out El Flaco for El Tico when you’re down by one and Montero is wearing a cast?
In Sigi I trust, but that was a game I wanted….
    Anyone???
