Beautiful day for training out at Qwest Field today. And while there didn’t seem to be any real news from today’s session, we did get a few updates as the Sounders turn their attention to Friday.

Here’s some of what coach Sigi Schmid had to say:

On Houston Dynamo) “They have made a lot of changes but there’s obviously a lot of guys that have been around the league. Brad Davis is still a key player for them and he has been around with them for a while. Geoff Cameron has been on the club now for a few years. Brian Ching up front is a pretty standard character. Jason Garey I know from my days in Columbus. I drafted him there so he is somebody we are well aware of. […] Bobby Boswell has been around for them. Is Eddie Robinson going to step back in the lineup because [Jermaine] Taylor is missing? He’s been around for a while as well. There’s a lot of guys that have been there for a while.”

On Houston’s style of play) “They are a team that works very hard. They are a team that has got good size. They got one of the best free kick takers in the league in Brad Davis. They really try to make use of their set pieces and their corners and with their size and with his accuracy of service they are very dangerous at that, so that sometimes is some part of their game. And they are going to be aggressive defensively.”

On injured Sounders returning to action) “We’ll see. Each day it’s a re-evaluation of what happened the day before. Today a couple of guys did a little bit more than what they did the day before, so now we have got to see if there are any setbacks tomorrow. Certainly if we can bring those guys back into the fold, whether it’s starting or off the bench that’s going to improve the strength of our team.”

On the first nine days of the season) “It was a tough beginning, especially with the games that we played and to have to play and travel takes a little bit out of you. From a standpoint of fitness we think we are OK. We just need to see the ball go in the back of the net. We think if we can get one that will open it up for us a little bit, take the pressure off the pressure-cooker a little bit. I think we have been in both games that we have played. We’ve done well in those games in terms of our play but we haven’t scored. … Sometimes that good fortune goes your way and you end up with the results and sometimes it doesn’t. It’s important that we don’t panic. It’s important that we realize what we’re all about. No expansion team has done what we have done in the first two years. Again, taking away Chicago and Chicago never won another one either by the way, no expansion team was close to winning an MLS title in year three. So I’m proud of that and we still feel we have a chance to contend and we just need to get some wins.”

On being 0-2) “If you won five and then you lost two nobody would say anything either. Sometimes you can’t pick when they come. Certainly we’re not happy about it. We want to do better. We need to do better. We need to work a little harder. We need to create our own luck. You can throw all the slogans out there that you want to throw out but at the end of the day we’re not happy with the results. We want to get more.”

  1. Perhaps it’s premature, but I feel like if we don’t win this game it could end up being a long season.

I’m very curious to see what our midfield is going to look like on Friday, and I hope Zak is ready to go.

I’m ok with Sigi’s comment about being 0-2 if they do in fact turn this around and get a win but if it goes to 0-3 or beyond, there is definitely trouble in paradise.

  3. EverydayFan says:

It’s way too early to get too worried about the season – even at 0-3, even if it’s a long season in MLS, all that matters is how deep they go in the cups and MLS Playoffs, and how they defend our city in the rivalries,
    Go Sounders, Baby!

  4. I agree it’s very early, I’m just worried that a potentially 0-3 team isn’t gonna go very far in the Open Cup, or MLS Cup.

We gotta right the ship tomorrow! Let’s do diss!
