I remember the first word I ever heard Fredy Montero say: “Frio.”

That came when he was asked his first impressions of Seattle.

And I heard similar today with first words from new Sounder Mauro Rosales — though, in English: “It’s too cold for Latin players.”

Here’s more from Rosales’ first interview with the local media after training today at Starfire:

On coming to MLS) It was not difficult to have a decision to join. I was watching MLS soccer and it’s great. It’s growing up year by year, and when I had a chance to come to a big team as Seattle Sounders I had no doubt this was a great opportunity to come here. I’m enjoying this moment and I will try to do my best.

On his own game) My favorite position is on the right side – the middle for right side – but I can play many positions and forward – always attacking. I have 30 years old, and I have a lot of teams in my career and good moments. I want to say that this is new: Seattle Sounders – and I will try to do everything this is possible for me to have a great team here, to become champion if it is possible, because this team is working hard to do that.

On leaving River Plate) I was there for three years. I had a good time. I become champion. And I wanted to change area. I wanted to go to somewhere else.

On wearing the No. 10 jersey)
The No. 7 is what I use a lot. It was with James Riley. If I have to take a number it was like 38 or something like that. This was available and they give to me. There’s nothing important with No. 10. I play the last 10 years with the No. 7, and when I come here it was wirh James Riley, and I don’t have anything to say to Riley. That’s OK.

  1. It’s easy to see why they picked him up. But wondering where he fits in. Are we really looking at sitting Flaco? Or is this former top tier player willing to ride the bench.
