Cascadia Summit matches will be streamed

Tickets are gone, but you can still watch Sounders’ FC meet its Northwest rivals in preseason friendlies this week in Tukwila.

Here’s the word from the club:

The Seattle Sounders FC announced today that the three Cascadia Summit matches will be streamed live on each team’s website. Streaming for each match will begin approximately 20 minutes before first kick. Each team will provide one host for their match. The host’s will rotate as play-by-play and analyst by half. The match schedule is below.

Sounders beat Fire, head back to Puget Sound

The Sounders are heading home to Puget Sound with a victory in their pocket.

Here’s a club report from the last day in Florida:

The Seattle Sounders FC played the Chicago Fire on Saturday afternoon in its final training game in Florida. Rookie Servando Carrasco scored in the final minute of the match as Sounders FC (4-2-2) won, 1-nil, over 120 minutes.

After two scoreless 45-minute periods, Carrasco found the net in the last minute of the final 30-minute period. Zach Scott sent a long pass to Roger Levesque on the flank who dropped the ball to Miguel Montaño.

Florida training concludes, face Fire tomorrow

Here’s a report from the club on the eve of its final day in Florida:

The Seattle Sounders FC took the field on Friday morning for its final training session of the Florida leg of preseason camp. The team did fitness work with fitness coach Dave Tenney and then played several games of 5v2 keep away to warm up.

The group then played a game of 11v11 on a half field with four big goals on each sideline with a keeper in net. The drill focused on changing the point of attack and defense. There were a series of

Sounders clobber UCF, 7-nil

Here is today’s report from the club in Florida:

The Seattle Sounders FC played the University of Central Florida in a training game on Thursday afternoon at the IMG Soccer Academy. Sounders FC (3-2-2) used five second-half goals to beat UCF, 7-nil, in a traditional 90-minute game.

Pat Noonan and O’Brian White both scored a brace, David Estrada recorded a goal and an assist and Mike Fucito scored a goal with two assists for Sounders FC.

Sounders announce details of Cascadia Summit

This just in from the club:

The Seattle Sounders FC announced today details for the Cascadia Summit, which will take place Friday, March 4 through Sunday, March 6, at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila, Wash.

The Summit opens up with Sounders FC taking on Portland at 7:30 p.m. PT on Friday, March 4. On Saturday, the Timbers and Whitecaps FC kick off at 4 p.m. PT. The weekend activities conclude on Sunday with the Sounders FC versus Whitecaps FC at 3 p.m. PT.

Schmid raves about rookie keepers; less on DPs

Two topics particularly struck me today while taking part in a conference call with Sounders coach Sigi Schmid.

First, he was about as enthused as I’ve ever heard him when discussing rookie goalkeepers Josh Ford and Bryan Meredith.

Second, he was notably more reserved his his updates on designated players Blaise Nkufo and Alvaro Fernandez. Each joined the Sounders in the middle of last season, so there was some feeling that their spotty performances might be due to overwork, and that they would be whole different players this season after a little rest and a training camp with

Schmid says this will be Nkufo’s last season

It may not come as the biggest of surprises, but I believe today was the first time that I’ve heard anyone with the Sounders say that designated player Blaise Nkufo will not be with the team in 2012 or beyond.

Coach Sigi Schmid’s comment came in response to a question about whether the arrival of O’Brian White and others gave the Sounders so many similar big forwards alongside Fredy Montero that there might be an interest in trading someone from the current list.

MLS announces 10-team playoff format

MLS has announced a 2011 playoff format in which 10 of the 18 teams will qualify for the post season: the three top teams from the Eastern and Western conferences, and four wildcards regardless of conference.
