Announcement coming: Montero as DP?

Sounders FC has called a press conference for noon Wednesday, when general manager Adrian Hanauer will make a “player announcement.”

I have no inside information at this moment, but the immediate guesses might be the re-signing of Kasey Keller, or perhaps something with Fredy Montero.

Update: And now World Soccer Reader is reporting it is “likely” the latter, who will become the club’s third designated player.

Zakuani to train with Everton

Sorry to be late with this, but the Sounders put out a note recently on Steve Zakuani’s off-season plans. The most interesting sentence is the last one:

Steve Zakuani made his first international appearance last week, starting and playing the first hour of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s 3-1 loss to Mali in a November 17 friendly outside Paris. Zakuani was involved in the sequence which resulted in Congo DR taking a 1-nil lead into halftime. After visiting his family in London, Zakuani will move on to Liverpool and train there with Everton FC.

Sounders trade for Vancouver forward White

This just in from the club:

Seattle Sounders FC today acquired forward O’Brian White from the Vancouver Whitecaps FC in a trade for allocation money.

White, 24, had been chosen 12th overall by Vancouver in Wednesday’s MLS Expansion Draft. He started 14 times for Toronto FC in his two MLS seasons, making 33 appearances overall. White debuted for the senior Jamaica National Team on November 17, starting the friendly against Costa Rica.

Chosen fourth overall in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft, White missed the first half of his rookie season while recovering from a knee injury sustained during his senior

Schmid ‘disappointed’ at expansion losses

Here’s a release from the club, including a quote from coach Sigi Schmid on today’s expansion losses (post below):

Seattle Sounders FC midfielders Sanna Nyassi and Nathan Sturgis were selected today by the Vancouver Whitecaps FC with two of its 10 selections in the 2010 Major League Soccer Expansion Draft.

Nyassi, 21, was taken with the second overall pick and Sturgis, 23, the sixth. The Portland Timbers chose FC Dallas midfielder Dax McCarty with the top overall selection.

Following the selection of Nyassi, Seattle added defender Patrick Ianni to its protected list. Teams could not lose more than two players

Sounders lose Nyassi and Sturgis

The Vancouver Whitecaps selected Seattle’s Sanna Nyassi with their first pick in today’s expansion draft.

The Sounders then added Patrick Ianni to their protected list.

And with their third pick in the draft, the Whitecaps took starting midfielder Nathan Sturgis.

Nyassi did not remain a Whitecap very long, as Vancouver almost instantly traded him to Colorado for an international player slot.

Here are the full draft results.

What do Timbers-Whitecaps plan now?

Here’s some coverage indicating — maybe — what the Timbers and Whitecaps thought of the lists they were presented yesterday.

From the Oregonian.

Key paragraphs:

Some well-known names left unprotected are Real Salt Lake and former Oregon State star Robbie Findley, Seattle’s Blaise N’kufo, New York’s Juan Pablo Angel, Kansas City’s Jimmy Conrad and Chicago’s Nery Castillo.

But the Timbers, who possess the first pick in the expansion draft, aren’t necessarily looking for the biggest names.

Wilkinson, head coach John Spencer and the Timbers staff have created a number of mock drafts and lists of players they think
