Sounders goal: Give up nothing at home

It was a rainy morning at Starfire as the Sounders concluded training for tomorrow’s playoff-opening match against the Galaxy.

At Friday training, I had been struck my how many Sounders were stressing the goal of holding LA “to zero” in the home leg of this two-game aggregate score series. And coach Sigi Schmid continued the theme today, when I asked him — considering the Galaxy’s firepower — if he would feel a need to push forward aggressively if even or even a single goal up in the second half tomorrow.

“The object is not to give anything up at

Two more MLS playoff series start today

Two more MLS playoff series start today. And the one in the West — meaning the one that will determine the opponent for the LA-Seattle winner — is on Fox Soccer Channel.

Here’s a short preview from MLS:

2010 Sounders statistical leaders

With the regular season about to morph over into the playoffs, I wanted to take a quick look at the Sounders’ statistical leaders of 2010.

The highest local finisher among the league’s major statistical categories was Fredy Montero, who tied for fourth with four game-winning assists.

However, Montero dominated in team statistics. He shared the top spot in goal-scoring with Steve Zakuani, with 10 each. And Montero led the Sounders in assists, shots, shots on goal, fouls suffered and fouls committed.

“I’m proud to be able to do all of that,” Montero said through a translator. “But my teammates

Boss likely to be ready for Galaxy

You know it’s kind of a slow news day when the top news out of practice involved a player who probably won’t play.

But that was the way it was at Qwest Field today as the Sounders wrapped up their second-to-last training session before their Sunday playoff opener against LA.

“We wanted to see how (reserve keeper Terry Boss) got through training yesterday, how he felt this morning,” coach Sigi Schmid said. “He felt great this morning, got through training today pretty well. So if he feels great tomorrow morning he should be on the bench for us.”

Beckham looking forward to Qwest

David Beckham — the best-known player in MLS — was away on loan when the Galaxy faced the Sounders at Qwest Field last season, and he was recovering from an Achilles injury when the Galaxy visited in May of this year.

However, he mended quickly enough to play in the Galaxy’s last seven MLS games, and he says he’ll be ready to face the Sounders in the playoff opener Sunday.

“I’m feeling good,” he said in a phone interview this morning. “Obviously, I played another 90 minutes at the weekend, which always help. Obviously still not back to full fitness,
