Rapids win, 1-0. It’s their fourth 1-0 game in a row and sixth of the season. Tonight’s one goal was stuck by Conor Casey, his fourth of the season but first in run of play.

The Sounders fall to 3-5-3 and remain stuck at 12 points.

The offense that seemed to appear against Boca, disappeared again. (And a bit of a reality check was added to that game tonight in Portland, where the second-division Timbers also put three in the back of the net on Boca in a 3-2 win.)

Here are the official stats from Colorado

Next, the Sounders return home for what suddenly loom as a pair of crucial matches before the World Cup break: New England a week from today, and D.C. United on June 16. After the World Cup break, the Sounders return to action at Philly. So that’s really three games coming up where they should be shooting for three points each time.

But all of that is for another day. I’ll be back with notes and quotes.

Replay at 9 on FSN, and again at 10 a.m. Sunday.

76th minute: Montano for Montero.

63rd minute: Conor Casey puts Colorado up 1-0. He ran onto a nice pass from Cummings, muscled down a challenge from Jeff Parke, and then lofted a little chip over Kasey Keller, who had come out to help when Parks went to the ground.

52nd minute: It had struck me for much of the first half, that Ljungberg seemed to be making a good effort to control his temper. However, that seems to have given way as he just picked a caution for dissent, moments after Ianni picked up a yellow for a tackle from behind.

Second half: Has begun. Sounders now have what appears to be a pretty stiff wind at their backs.

Half: Nil-nil.

Stoppage time: Zakuani to Ljungberg in space behind the Rapids defense. Ljunberg carries for about 40 yards but got a challenge from the defense deep in the area and fired high over the crossbar.

38th minute:Ianni puts a nice aggressive one-touch volley on goal. Slapped away, but a nice effort, and it earns the Sounders their first corner of the game.

31st minute: Sigi Schmid, in a sideline TV interview, calls the first half-hour “OK.” He seems to imply the Soudners might have over-passed on a couple of their changes. And he clearly doesn’t like the way his defense has handled the Colorado corners so far.

16th minute: First good Sounders chance: Ljungberg carries into the area and floats a pass just a little too long and high for unmarked Pat Noonan to head on target.

(The crowd looks like it’s filled in pretty nicely now.)

Ninth minute: And another, as Cummings puts a point-blank header straight into Kasey Keller.

Very shaky start.

Sixth minute: Sounders dodge a bullet. Wonderful stretch of five passes around the penalty area before a cross to Conor Casey was misfired off target.

Kickoff: Here we go. Sounders in green/green; Rapids in burgundy/white.

Wind seems to be whipping. But, wow, that crowd looks terrible. Nice seeing the rave and electricity in the stands, through.

Lineup: Sounders going with an interesting lineup: GK Keller, D Gonzalez, Marshall, Parke, Riley; M Evans, Ljungberg, Ianni; F Zakuani, Montero, Noonan.

Pregame: Sounders kick off at Colorado at 6 p.m. I’ll keep this post open all evening for pregame news, in-game reports, postgame notes and quotes; and of course comments all the way through.

  1. See. Shoulda worn the yellow.

  2. blahbl4hblah says:

Absolutely dreadful game so far. Montero is just standing around again. Everyone is just kicking the ball around instead of trying to make some plays.. Gonna be another loss if they don’t pull their heads out and start hustling…

  3. So did someone forget to tell the Colorado supporters what time the match started?

  4. blahbl4hblah says:

Really getting sick of Ljunberg’s attitude… He needs to just grow a pair and play the game…

  5. EverydayFan says:

Ljungberg has to bury that chance!
Great pass by Zak for naught

  6. EverydayFan says:

    It’s Seamon time

  7. I’d give young Seamon a bit more time to get match fit. But I love that he was bold enough to fire the shot on what I think was his first touch. Appears to not be the timid sort.

PS Are the Gals going to clinch a playoff birth before the World Cup break? Good lord those guys are rolling.

  8. blahbl4hblah says:

Anybody else catch those sprinklers on?? Why would those be on in the MIDDLE OF A GAME?!?

  9. EverydayFan says:

Riley is a turnover machine … Seen it too many tines

  10. EverydayFan says:

Montano for Montero = one disco dancer for another … Pair him with Seamon and score goals!

  11. Uh Parke. You know that gigantic bald guy in the Maroon shirt? Might be a good idea to mark him when he’s in the box.

  12. EverydayFan says:

    Montero would have buried that

  13. EverydayFan says:

Weren’t they going to put Montano in the game????

  14. EverydayFan says:

Last bitter post of the night:
Nyassi = the nicest all-around person who has never scored as a Sounder in an MLS game

  15. wasobelle says:

how did wynne get so many WIDE crosses unmarked?!?!?

  16. wasobelle says:

second try… how did wynne end up with wide crosses AND unmarked so often?!?!

  17. elmocatt says:

Good mood early in the day from the US win spoiled by a crappy Sounders game. I would love to see an opposing team’s scouting report – because the MLS sure has them figured out so far this season.

The team might have to limp into the WC break, wait for Nkufo’s arrival and then hope he helps the team get hot in the second half of the season . . . because not much is happening now out there. Grrrr.

  18. EverydayFan says:

    With you Elmo

  19. Today I cheered Landycakes and cursed Ljungberg. There is an imbalance in the Force.

  20. jimkingjr says:

It is time to bench the Swede.

  21. joepublic says:

Landon Donovan is our guy. Ten days til showtime — so anxious I could burst. Traveling this past week in Ireland and I can assure you the English papers are full of nerves and apprehension about June 12.

It’s time to cut the Swede. Never should have signed him.
