Schmid: Changes are coming (updated)

The quick snapshot from the locker room was the Sounders admitting they didn’t play well, and maybe even that they didn’t play hard the whole way.

Kasey Keller took full responsibility for the first goal.

Sigi Schmid seemed most unhappy with the third. And — the real big news — said that the long leash he has given some regulars has snapped, and lineup changes are coming.

“It’s not time to panic, but it is time for some people to wake up and for character to step forward,” Schmid said. “When you’re down 2-, 3- nothing, people have to step up and show what they’re made of. There are some guys that we’ve asked repeatedly to do some things. It hasn’t been coming, so there are some changes that are going to be made as a result. … We compete for spots every week. I’ve given some guys a longer leash than others. That leash just tore today.”

Schmid was hesitant to say that the team lacked confidence that they could come back from 1- or 2-goals down. And Freddie Ljungberg was hesitant to say anyone quit. But no one went to the mat to make the case that the Sounders actually gave their full 90.

One thing everyone agreed on: Miguel Montano was the bright spot. Expect to see more.

  1. “And Fredy Ljungberg was hesitant to say anyone quit.”

FredDIE may not be saying, but that sure looks like a freudian slip to me, Don.
