The Sounders are off today — apparently even the ones whose fitness tests didn’t go so well. But they’ve better enjoy it, because their training schedule now shifts to a run of 12 training sessions over 10 days … and in two states.
They will end their first wave of training Monday and Tuesday at Starfire. Then fly to Arizona where they will train from Wednesday through Feb. 10 — with double practices on Thursday and Feb. 8.
And, of course, now that the MLS and its players union have agreed to extend their collective bargaining agreement deadline through Feb. 12, Sounders coach Sigi Schmid is now free to plan the next two weeks of training, knowing that training will actually take place.
“We’ll sit down and go over exactly what we’re going to do Monday and Tuesday at the very beginning of Monday,” Schmid said Friday. “Monday we’re going to plan pretty much all of Phoenix because we now have all the test information. We know who needs special programs, who needs to do some supplemental stuff. There’s probably a group of about six guys who (came in Saturday) to do some extra work. They (didn’t) get two days off like the rest of the guys because they’re behind the eight ball a little bit fitness wise.”
