Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! Pete Carroll answers queries about Australian rugby star Jarryd Hayne’s visit to Seahawks

An superstar in Australian rugby — not the fact the Seahawks have begun the defense of their Super Bowl title at 3-2, or that Marshawn Lynch had seven fewer carries last weekend than Cam Newton — was what coach Pete Carroll was talking about most at the start of his weekly Wednesday press conference this afternoon.

Carroll mentioned “it looks like it’s going to be a while,” probably weeks, before middle linebacker Bobby Wagner returns from his turf toe injury sustained last weekend in the loss to Dallas, though the coach said Wagner does not need surgery. It sounds like

Seahawks back to work to prep for Rams, with LB Bobby Wagner’s turf toe a top issue

The Seahawks are back on the practice field this morning and this afternoon following the players’ only day off this week before Sunday’s game at St. Louis (1-4). Rams coach Jeff Fisher is doing his weekly conference call with the media from the opposing team’s city this morning. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll meets with the media just after noon.

The first topic of that discussion is likely to be the health of middle linebacker Bobby Wagner, specifically how his turf-toe injury may affect Seattle’s defense over the next few games.

In today’s News Tribune I went further into the

Hey, c’mon back from that ledge! It’s still way early in this Seahawks season

For those of you who may be reading this while your toes are dangling from a ledge of a tall building, a reminder:

It’s mid-October.

These are long seasons, full of teams on winning streaks, losing streaks and injury streaks — many of which are still to happen. The nature of NFL teams usually playing only once every seven days means there are six days in between to scrutinize and inflate the importance of the most recent game. Win or lose that last game becomes a confirmation or indictment of an entire season.

In fact, it’s 1/16th of it.

Sure,

Sore Seahawks: Key LB Bobby Wagner has turf toe, could miss a while; CB Byron Maxwell has a strained calf

One of the many reasons the NFL hasn’t had a repeat Super Bowl champion since the 2003-04 Patriots is injuries to key starters.

The Seahawks are having a worrisome share right now.

Bobby Wagner, one of the most valuable stoppers in the middle of the defense, has a turf-toe ligament injury that coach Pete Carroll says may be like the one that sidelined Russell Okung for eight games in 2013 and led the left tackle to surgery.

“We’ll have to take this the next couple days and see what that means. But he’s banged up,” Carroll said of his middle

Do the Seahawks have too many weapons and ideas on offense for their own good?

Finishing my game story and notebook last night for today’s News Tribune on the Seahawks’ 30-23 loss to the Cowboys, I dug up this telling statistic on Seattle’s use — and misuse — of Marshawn Lynch since it acquired him from Buffalo in a trade four games into the 2010 season:

The Seahawks are now 2-9 when the giving Lynch 10 or fewer rushes in a game. That includes 0-2 this season, Sunday’s second loss in 21 home games for Seattle and his six-carry day last month in a 30-21 loss at

llPostgame video, quotes from Seahawks’ 2nd loss in 21 home games, 30-23 to Dallas: “We make no excuses”

Russell Wilson, above, had the third-lowest rated passing game of his career today: 14 completions in 28 attempts, 126 yards passing, no touchdowns throwing, an interception to end Seattle’s last, desperation try to tie in the final minute and two sacks.

“I felt like I let people down, or whatever,” Wilson said.

Or whatever would have been better than what actually happened to the Seahawks in their second loss in 21 home games and sixth loss in 31 games overall.

Here are the quotes from after Dallas’ 30-23 victory today:

Indicator Kam Chancellor may not play: Seahawks sign S Steven Terrell off practice squad

The Seahawks made a roster move this afternoon that is an indicator strong safety Kam Chancellor may not play tomorrow against Dallas because of his new strained hip: they signed second-year safety Steven Terrell off their practice squad to provide insurance in case Chancellor can’t go.

The corresponding move was waiving seldom-used defensive end Greg Scruggs, who if he clears waivers this weekend could end up on Seattle’s practice squad.

The move also back-fills a roster move from earlier the week, when the Seahawks released safety Josh Thomas to add sign center Patrick Lewis. Lewis arrived from Cleveland’s practice squad
