Pete Carroll on KJR radio: he still gets awakened by Super Bowl; Earl Thomas “absolutely” will be ready for season

Credit host Dave Mahler for going beyond the primary news of the Seahawks’ week — the stunning trade to acquire premier tight end Jimmy Graham from New Orleans, the signing of Cary Williams to likely replace Byron Maxwell as a starting cornerback — and asking a checklist full of roster questions and follow-ups from post-Super Bowl issues to coach Pete Carroll today. The question-and-answer session aired live this afternoon on Mahler’s show on Seattle’s 950 KJR radio.

Here are the highlights of what Carroll said:

–All-Pro safety Earl Thomas “absolutely” will be ready for the start of the regular season

Splash! Seahawks start new league year by trading C Max Unger for TE supreme Jimmy Graham

The Seahawks just made the biggest splash of the brand-new league year.

New Orleans has agreed to send superstar tight end Jimmy Graham and a fourth-round draft choice to Seattle for Seahawks’ two-time Pro Bowl center Max Unger and a first-round pick. The News Tribune confirmed that the terms of the surprising deal Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer broke just before the NFL league year began at 1 p.m. Pacific Time today are accurate.

Russell Wilson has already talked to Graham this afternoon, plotting offseason workouts together, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said.

The mega deal pulled off over the last three

No baby delievery for Sherman; among Seahawks’ Super Bowl inactives: NFC title game hero Garry Gilliam

Richard Sherman’s (very) pregnant girlfriend is not imminently close to labor with their son, so the Seahawks’ All-Pro cornerback is indeed full-go for today’s Super Bowl.

Undrafted rookie free agent Garry Gilliam is inactive for Super Bowl 49, two weeks after the former Penn State tight end caught a fake-field-goal touchdown that sparked the Seahawks’ rally past Green Bay in the NFC championship. Gilliam’s mother Thelma “Vene” Shifflett and her older son made the trip from Carisle, Pennsylvania, on Thursday to be here for Gilliam.

Seattle’s other inactvies: third-string quarterback B.J. Daniels, cornerback Marcus Burley, center Patrick Lewis,

Seahawks roster move coming; Patrick Lewis’ advantageous switch; NFL picks for Week 17

The Seahawks should be announcing a signing to their active roster by this afternoon, before the 24-hour deadline to set rosters for a game. Yesterday they released seldom-used defensive tackle Travian Robertson, leaving them with 52 players signed to the 53-man roster.

My News Tribune colleague Don Ruiz write for today’s newspaper on how reluctant Patrick Lewis once was to switch from guard to center — and how that switch has been paying off for the Seahawks. Lewis might start for the second consecutive game since Max Unger is questionable to play tomorrow against the St. Louis Rams. Unger

Seahawks’ chances for top NFC seed hinge on winning, GB-DET not tying. There have only been 20 ties in 40 NFL years.

The NFL issued the following Monday, and all of it comes down to one fundamental truth: If the Seahawks, who are already in the playoffs, beat the Rams at home on Sunday they will have achieved everything they set as their goal for this regular season defending their Super Bowl title.

If they lose — or if on the one in-almost-500 chance Green Bay and Detroit tie — the Seahawks could be the second, third, fifth or sixth seed.

There have been exactly 20 ties in the NFL in 9,556 regular-season games over the last 40 seasons, since the

The subtle and the sublime: How the Seahawks have stormed back to seize the NFC

So how did they do that?

How did the Seattle Seahawks (11-4) annihilate the first-place Arizona Cardinals by 29 points on the road to seize not only the NFC West but also put themselves one home victory Sunday against St. Louis (6-9) from having home-field advantage throughout the conference’s playoffs?

How have the defending Super Bowl champions won five consecutive games? How have they won eight of their past nine after a 3-3 start? The start that had Sports Illustrated write this just last month under the heading “Season’s story lines:”

“Seahawks repeat. DIED: WEEK 6

How have they done

Russell Okung, Max Unger out; J.R. Sweezy will play, Carroll says

Both Russell Okung and Max Unger will sit because of injuries in Sunday night’s game against the Arizona Cardinals.

That’s what Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said after practice Friday. That leaves the Seahawks without their two All-Pro offensive linemen against a Cardinals pass rush that sacked quarteraback Russell Wilson seven times the last time these teams met on Nov. 23.

But the good news: Carroll said right guard J.R. Sweezy will play. He missed Wednesday and Thursday with an ankle injury and is listed as probable on the injury report.

So it’s not quite half the

Russell Wilson on AZ: “This is why you play in the NFL”; and his goal of never missing a practice in his career

“This is why you play in the NFL.”

That is what Russell Wilson said today about the Seahawks’ showdown Sunday night at Arizona essentially for the NFC West championship on the next-to-last weekend of the regular season.

Wilson offered his “hope” that all his injured starting offensive linemen — center Max Unger, left tackle Russell Okung and right guard J.R. Sweezy — will play against the blitzing Cardinals. Signs I’m reading say only Sweezy has a realistic chance to start after he sprained his ankle during last weekend’s win over San Francisco yet
