Absurdly early — four months before the opener — impressions of organized team activities without helmets

All you need to know about how vitally important today’s OTA practice on the field at team headquarters in Renton will be to the Seahawks’ 2015 season: All-Pro safety Earl Thomas didn’t participate. Franchise quarterback Russell Wilson, prized tight end Jimmy Graham, bedrock running back Marshawn Lynch, key rush ends Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett and linebacker Bruce Irvin weren’t even in the same zip code during it.

And they weren’t even wearing helmets during scrimmaging.

That latter fact was because the Seahawks, coach Pete Carroll said, asked for input from the league office on the proper “tempo” for these OTAs that

No Wilson. No Graham. No Lynch. No … Seahawks OTAs more noteworthy for who wasn’t on the field than for who was

The Seahawks’ first day of offensive-versus-defense drills in voluntary organized team activities was more remarkable for who wasn’t there (and why) than for who was on the field.

Russell Wilson (along with Mo Kelly, Seahawks vice president of player engagement) took a transcontinental flight to be in Florida Tuesday with recently acquired tight end Jimmy Graham for the funeral of Graham’s close mentor Tamara Fox Meyerson. The quarterback was also trying to travel to the funeral for the father of defensive end Cliff Avril.

Pete Carroll on KJR radio: he still gets awakened by Super Bowl; Earl Thomas “absolutely” will be ready for season

Credit host Dave Mahler for going beyond the primary news of the Seahawks’ week — the stunning trade to acquire premier tight end Jimmy Graham from New Orleans, the signing of Cary Williams to likely replace Byron Maxwell as a starting cornerback — and asking a checklist full of roster questions and follow-ups from post-Super Bowl issues to coach Pete Carroll today. The question-and-answer session aired live this afternoon on Mahler’s show on Seattle’s 950 KJR radio.

Here are the highlights of what Carroll said:

–All-Pro safety Earl Thomas “absolutely” will be ready for the start of the regular season

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel report: Seahawks targeting Packers’ Tramon Williams to replace Byron Maxwell at CB

A report tonight out of Wisconsin says John Schneider’s roots in Green Bay could lead to a new starting cornerback for the Seahawks.

Packers writer Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel writes Seattle’s general manager, a former Packers executive, will seek Tramon Williams to replace unrestricted free agent Byron Maxwell as the Seahawks’ starter opposite All-Pro Richard Sherman should Williams reject Green Bay’s contract offer to return there.

McGinn is a veteran with connections inside the Packers’ organization, so I would give this story more credence than many of the national reports we’ve seen about the Seahawks in

Entire transcript of GM John Schneider today at NFL combine, including off-stage comments on Lane, Thomas surgeries

Any more news on offseason surgeries? “Well, Earl (Thomas) is going to have his (shoulder) surgery coming up. That’s probably our biggest issue. But it’s a normal procedure, so he should do well.”

No issues for him being ready for the start of the 2015 season? “No. Especially Earl. He attacks everything.”

Even start of training camp for Thomas? “You know, I’m not sure. We are going to monitor him and make sure we do what’s best for long term. He’s going to be scratching and fighting to get out there as soon as he can. But we just don’t

GM John Schneider: DB Jeremy Lane needs knee surgery, too; Earl Thomas yet to have shoulder surgery; nothing new on Lynch, Wilson

First the news from talking with general manager John Schneider this morning here in Indianapolis at the NFL scouting combine: It came well after his main podium appearance, in a side hallway in the lobby of Lucas Oil Stadium where he said nickel back Jeremy Lane also needs knee surgery, the result of the end-zone interception and return in the first quarter of the Super Bowl Feb. 1 on which Lane also broke his arm. That means Lane will likely miss the start of next season, at least the preseason if not the

It’s a boy: Richard Sherman and girlfriend Ashley Moss have their baby, four days after Super Bowl

The timing worked out for Richard Sherman better than the game result.

Four days after playing in an excruciating Super Bowl loss to New England while assured that his girlfriend Ashley Moss wasn’t yet going into labor and avoiding a potentially weighty decision whether to play, the Seahawks All-Pro cornerback announced today the birth of a little No. 25.

And the little

Report: Kam Chancellor says he was told he had torn MCL, couldn’t play in Super Bowl–before he did

NFL.com and Seahawks.com reported today strong safety Kam Chancellor played Sunday’s Super Bowl 49 with what he was told two days before was a torn medial collateral ligament in

his knee.

Chancellor got a bone bruise on the left knee on the next-to-last play of Friday’s practice at Arizona State University in Tempe. The league’s pool report from the closed practice that day said Chancellor walked off the field without a limp but had the knee wrapped. He was listed as probable and played in the 28-24 loss to the New England Patriots two days later.
