The value of Max Unger and Brandon Mebane to the Seahawks — and what’s next without them

If you saw even a fraction of the Seahawks’ loss yesterday in Kansas City you saw how much Seattle’s defense misses Brandon Mebane, who went on injured reserve with a torn hamstring last week. Jamaal Charles and the Chiefs tromped through where Mebane used to stuff blockers and running lanes en route to 190 yards rushing. That is by far the most Seattle’s previously No.-1 rushing defense has allowed this season.

Seahawks place DT Brandon Mebane on injured-reserve (hamstring), ending his stellar season

The Seahawks have placed run-stuffing, blocker-devouring defensive tackle Brandon Mebane on injured reserve because of a torn hamstring, ending what had been a standout season inside for the eight-year veteran.

The team brought back tight end RaShaun Allen by signing him off the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad to fill Mebane’s place on the 53-man active roster.

Percy Harvin out this week for the Seahawks

Head coach Pete Carroll said wide receiver Percy Harvin will not play this week against St. Louis. LB Bobby Wagner and WR Golden Tate are expected to play Monday night.

Carroll said Harvin looked fine during the week, but needs to get his conditioning right.

Safety Jeron Johnson is also out because of a hamstring strain.

Carroll on KIRO: ‘There’s some potential there to get Russell (Okung) back’

This isn’t the most hard-hitting interview since it’s conducted by news folks at KIRO (with Danny O’Neil sitting in to give a sports flavor). But, Carroll says they have to get through today before fully talking about and knowing what’s happening long-term with Russell Okung. That makes it sound like we won’t hear anything further from Carroll when he speaks to the press later today. There is no availability Saturday. Postgame Sunday may be when we get some answers. Take a listen.
