Russell Wilson on Seahawks contract: “I believe it’s going to work out. I want to be here for a long time.”

Russell Wilson says he hopes to sign a new contract that will keep him with the Seahawks for “a long time.” He says nothing has discouraged him from believing that will happen.

The agent for the two-time Super Bowl quarterback said last week he is “optimistic” he can get that deal done.

Seahawks general manager John Schneider, the man heading the negotiations, has said how much the franchise wants Wilson for the long term.

Coach Pete Carroll went even longer-term last month, saying: “We are so excited about getting Russell (an extension) and

Kam Chancellor, finally surgery-free: “This is the strongest offseason I’ve had”

The Seahawks are back on the field today for the third of their three days this week of organized team activities at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center in Renton. Quarterback Russell Wilson was expected to participate for the first time this week after being with Jimmy Graham in Miami Monday to attend the funeral of Graham’s mentor and manager, and after Wilson attended the funeral of the father of fellow teammate Cliff Avril Thursday in Jacksonville.

Kam Chancellor was back on the field, too, as he’s been all week. That is one of

Absurdly early — four months before the opener — impressions of organized team activities without helmets

All you need to know about how vitally important today’s OTA practice on the field at team headquarters in Renton will be to the Seahawks’ 2015 season: All-Pro safety Earl Thomas didn’t participate. Franchise quarterback Russell Wilson, prized tight end Jimmy Graham, bedrock running back Marshawn Lynch, key rush ends Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett and linebacker Bruce Irvin weren’t even in the same zip code during it.

And they weren’t even wearing helmets during scrimmaging.

That latter fact was because the Seahawks, coach Pete Carroll said, asked for input from the league office on the proper “tempo” for these OTAs that

No Wilson. No Graham. No Lynch. No … Seahawks OTAs more noteworthy for who wasn’t on the field than for who was

The Seahawks’ first day of offensive-versus-defense drills in voluntary organized team activities was more remarkable for who wasn’t there (and why) than for who was on the field.

Russell Wilson (along with Mo Kelly, Seahawks vice president of player engagement) took a transcontinental flight to be in Florida Tuesday with recently acquired tight end Jimmy Graham for the funeral of Graham’s close mentor Tamara Fox Meyerson. The quarterback was also trying to travel to the funeral for the father of defensive end Cliff Avril.

Wilson, Graham and

Why defenders Joey Mbu, Eli Harold and Nate Orchard are favorites entering this draft

Spend a couple months — or more, as many do these days — studying the NFL draft and some favorite guys emerge. I have a couple I would enjoy covering daily at Seahawks headquarters — and at least one I’ve come across who I’d prefer to not.

I was delighted to spend a few minutes at the combine in February talking to Houston defensive tackle Joey Mbu, and apparently everyone who meets him feels the same way. He laughed, joked and seemed genuinely appreciative of this opportunity to be a professional football player. He talked about how only four

Schneider to reporters at league meetings: Michael Bennett’s happy, hoping to have Russell Wilson’s deal done by summer

Michael Bennett’s a happy Seahawk, after all.

Greg Hardy’s domestic-violence incident was “absolutely, yes,” an issue for the Seahawks when they explored potentially adding the pass rusher before he signed as free agent last week with Dallas.

And the Seahawks hope to have Russell Wilson new contract done this offeason, like the Seahawks did with Earl Thomas and Richard Sherman last year. Thomas signed his four-year, $40 million extension in late April of 2014 and Sherman got his four-year, $56 million deal done in early May.

That’s what Seahawks general manager John Schneider told Terry Blount, who covers the

Pete Carroll on KJR radio: he still gets awakened by Super Bowl; Earl Thomas “absolutely” will be ready for season

Credit host Dave Mahler for going beyond the primary news of the Seahawks’ week — the stunning trade to acquire premier tight end Jimmy Graham from New Orleans, the signing of Cary Williams to likely replace Byron Maxwell as a starting cornerback — and asking a checklist full of roster questions and follow-ups from post-Super Bowl issues to coach Pete Carroll today. The question-and-answer session aired live this afternoon on Mahler’s show on Seattle’s 950 KJR radio.

Here are the highlights of what Carroll said:

–All-Pro safety Earl Thomas “absolutely” will be ready for the start of the regular season
