Cliff Avril glad docs kept him out of Super Bowl’s final quarter: “Concussions aren’t anything to play with”

The Seahawks were on their way to enjoying a double-digit lead in Super Bowl 49. They were getting to quarterback Tom Brady enough to keep him and New England stuck on 14 points late into the third quarter of the Feb. 1 championship game.

Seattle defensive coordinator Dan Quinn moved Michael Bennett inside from end to a tackle position for much of the game, and Bennett sped past New England’s rookie center Bryan Stork all night. Bennett had four hits on Brady. And the speed of fellow defensive end Cliff Avril coming off the other edge kept New England from totally

Seahawks start only mandatory minicamp–but grounded inside team HQ for 1st 2 days of it

Spending almost all this week at Chambers Bay to help cover for The News Tribune what is shaping up to be a U.S. Open unlike the previous 114 golf championships.

But Thursday I will leave the golf for a day to be back at my usual post, at Seahawks headquarters in Renton for the team’s only mandatory minicamp before training camp begins at the end of July.

Michael Bennett’s only kinda-sorta OTA protest; Paul Richardson’s progress, more from OTA practice #8

The Seahawks just finished the eighth of 10 organized-team-activity practices on the field here in Renton. How relatively casual did this one feel to the Tuesday ones I witnessed the previous two weeks?:

Sherman spoke to the media afterwards — and chuckled when asked if he’s been talking to teammate Michael Bennett, the defensive end who has skipped these voluntary practices after saying

Russell Wilson on Seahawks contract: “I believe it’s going to work out. I want to be here for a long time.”

Russell Wilson says he hopes to sign a new contract that will keep him with the Seahawks for “a long time.” He says nothing has discouraged him from believing that will happen.

The agent for the two-time Super Bowl quarterback said last week he is “optimistic” he can get that deal done.

Seahawks general manager John Schneider, the man heading the negotiations, has said how much the franchise wants Wilson for the long term.

Coach Pete Carroll went even longer-term last month, saying: “We are so excited about getting Russell (an extension) and

Kam Chancellor, finally surgery-free: “This is the strongest offseason I’ve had”

The Seahawks are back on the field today for the third of their three days this week of organized team activities at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center in Renton. Quarterback Russell Wilson was expected to participate for the first time this week after being with Jimmy Graham in Miami Monday to attend the funeral of Graham’s mentor and manager, and after Wilson attended the funeral of the father of fellow teammate Cliff Avril Thursday in Jacksonville.

Kam Chancellor was back on the field, too, as he’s been all week. That is one of

Pete Carroll on Russell Wilson contract talks: “Hopefully we’ll get something done. But if we don’t, we’ll just have to deal with that.”

The Seahawks have announced the signings of their top draft choice, defensive end Frank Clark, plus wide receiver/kick returner and third-round pick Tyler Lockett. That means all of the team’s draft picks are now signed. The 2011 collective bargaining agreement with a slotted rookie pay scale has taken all the old haggling and impasses into the summer out of rookie contract negotiations.

As for the most important talks of all right now: Russell Wilson and the Seahawks are close — in a literal, physical sense, if not in agreeable numbers during ongoing contract negotiations.

Tuesday in Renton, coach Pete Carroll briefly

No Wilson. No Graham. No Lynch. No … Seahawks OTAs more noteworthy for who wasn’t on the field than for who was

The Seahawks’ first day of offensive-versus-defense drills in voluntary organized team activities was more remarkable for who wasn’t there (and why) than for who was on the field.

Russell Wilson (along with Mo Kelly, Seahawks vice president of player engagement) took a transcontinental flight to be in Florida Tuesday with recently acquired tight end Jimmy Graham for the funeral of Graham’s close mentor Tamara Fox Meyerson. The quarterback was also trying to travel to the funeral for the father of defensive end Cliff Avril.

Wilson, Graham and

Seahawks have a decision to make by May 3 on Bruce Irvin’s future beyond 2015

The Seahawks raised eyebrows and curiosity by making Bruce Irvin the 15th-overall draft choice out of West Virginia in 2012. He was supposedly a one-dimensional pass-rush specialist for whom most of the league thought Seattle reached way high to get.

The Seahawks then raised Irvin’s profile and impact on the league’s No. 1-ranked defense when they benched Super Bowl 48 MVP Malcolm Smith last season and made Irvin an every-down player: a strong-side linebacker on running downs and a rush end off the edge of the defensive line in passing situations.

Now, will they give him the raise that speaks the
