Russell Wilson is the NFC’s offensive player of the week

The Seahawks will take this “alternate.”

A day after Russell Wilson was left off the Pro Bowl roster as an all-star alternate, the league this morning named Seattle’s quarterback as the NFC’s offensive player of the week. That was for him throwing for a regular-season career-high 339 yards and two touchdowns on 20 completions in 31 attempts and running for 88 yards and another score in the 35-6 dismantling of the Arizona Cardinals. In that game Wilson became the first NFL quarterback since Randall Cunningham in 1990 to have an 80-yard pass (to Luke Willson for a touchdown) and a

The subtle and the sublime: How the Seahawks have stormed back to seize the NFC

So how did they do that?

How did the Seattle Seahawks (11-4) annihilate the first-place Arizona Cardinals by 29 points on the road to seize not only the NFC West but also put themselves one home victory Sunday against St. Louis (6-9) from having home-field advantage throughout the conference’s playoffs?

How have the defending Super Bowl champions won five consecutive games? How have they won eight of their past nine after a 3-3 start? The start that had Sports Illustrated write this just last month under the heading “Season’s story lines:”

“Seahawks repeat. DIED: WEEK 6

How have they done

Two more Marshawn Lynch originals as Seahawks steamroll the Cardinals. Both were brilliant

Two more Marshawn Lynch originals tonight in Arizona:

And this then after the game:

Instead of “yeah,” instead of “no” — his responses in previous postgame inteviews, Marshawn Lynch was holiday-spirit thankful tonight after truly running over the Cardinals.

Here’s what it looked like just inside the doorway to the Seahawks’ locker room at University of Phoenix Stadium.

Seahawks rise for game day in Arizona, NFC West title at stake tonight

Game day has dawned sunny and cool here in the desert — though Seattle’s kickers were saying this week their hunch is the retractable roof will be closed at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale for tonight’s showdown of Seahawks and Cardinals essentially for the NFC West title.

Philadelphia’s face-plant at Washington yesterday means the Seahawks will clinch a playoff berth today with a either a win or a Dallas win at home over Indianapolis. In the bigger picture, the potential for Seattle (10-4) to earn the top seed in the NFC in next month’s postseason, the Seahawks would like

Continuity: Christmas comes early for Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn

K.J. Wright, four-year contract extension. A day later, the Seahawks announce Cliff Avril has a new, four-year deal.

Seattle has invested $55.5 million on two more of the core pieces to defensive coordinator Dan Quinn’s machine.

Quinn inherited half of this era of Seattle defensive excellence from predecessor Gus Bradley, now the first-time head man for the Jacksonville Jaguars. But his Seahawks credit Quinn with allowing them to play simply, and for being themselves on an off the field. The result is the NFL’s top-ranked defense for two seasons now.

“He allows us

Russell Wilson on AZ: “This is why you play in the NFL”; and his goal of never missing a practice in his career

“This is why you play in the NFL.”

That is what Russell Wilson said today about the Seahawks’ showdown Sunday night at Arizona essentially for the NFC West championship on the next-to-last weekend of the regular season.

Wilson offered his “hope” that all his injured starting offensive linemen — center Max Unger, left tackle Russell Okung and right guard J.R. Sweezy — will play against the blitzing Cardinals. Signs I’m reading say only Sweezy has a realistic chance to start after he sprained his ankle during last weekend’s win over San Francisco yet

Three-fifths of Seahawks O-line remains out heading into Arizona’s blitz-fest

Yes, 3/5ths of the starting offensive line remained out for the second consecutive practice day: LT Russell Okung (bruised lung; Pete Carroll hasn’t ruled out for Sunday yet), C Max Unger (high-ankle sprain, twisted knee) and RG J.R. Sweezy (ankle). That’s not the best Seahawks news days before Arizona’s blitzes swarm at them. Tthe Cardinals sacked QB Russell Wilson seven times in Seattle’s 19-3 home win last month.

If Sweezy and Unger can’t play, look for Patrick Lewis at center and perhaps backup center Lemuel Jeanpierre at guard. I get the sense Sweezy is going to play,
