Manning agrees with Sherman’s duck comment

Like 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick in the post above, Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning responded this morning to something Richard Sherman said.

Unlike Kaepernick, Manning responded with humor when asked about Sherman standing by his earlier comments that Manning’s passes are sometimes ducks.

“I believe it to be true, as well,” Manning said, drawing laughs from reporters. “They say he is a smart player, and I think that’s not a real reach with what he is saying there. I do throw ducks. I’ve thrown a lot of yards and touchdowns ducks. I am actually quite proud of it.”

Broncos dial it up with curfew, practice in pads

With the Media Day circus behind them, the Denver Broncos are shifting deeper into preparations for their Super Bowl date with the Seattle Seahawks.

Two symbols of the renewed focus: a player curfew instituted Tuesday and a practice in pads today.

“We’re on a business trip,” coach John Fox said. “There’s kind of a big event coming Sunday, and that’s what we’re here for. We’ve let them enjoy themselves some. Now we’re dialing back in and getting back to our preparation.”

Defensive end Shaun Phillips said he wasn’t surprised about the practice in pads.

“That is how it usually works

Denver coordinator cites Tacoma’s ageless Kitna

With 37-year-old Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning still near the top of his game, Denver offensive coordinator Adam Gase was asked what signs of decline tend to show up first on an aging quarterback.

“That would be hard for me to say,” he replied. “The only guy that I have been around that was an older quarterback was Jon Kitna, and when I left him in ’07, he had just come off of a 4,200 yard season and he looked pretty good to me. He was picked up by Dallas before the playoffs, and talking to (Cowboys’ offensive coordinator) Bill Callaghan,

Manning recalls free agency as “a public spectacle,” notes consideration from Pete Carroll

Talking about his free-agency decision of 2012, Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning indicated that the process, including the Seahawks’ approach, wasn’t something he was fully comfortable with. However, he followed that with a story about an earlier kindness from coach Pete Carroll.

Manning was asked “What do you remember about Seattle’s recruitment of you when you were a free agent” and why he didn’t sign there.

His response:

“You can only pick one team to go play for. It reminded me of college somewhat, that you would like to play for a lot of teams. Go play for this

Broncos defensive coordinator played hoops with Pete Carroll and baseball with Randy Johnson

Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio was not only an All-America linebacker at USC, he also played on the baseball team and was good enough to be drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays.

That two-sport background caused his path to cross with a pair of guys with USC connections who went on to do pretty well in the Pacific Northwest. One, not surprisingly, is Seahawks coach Pete Carroll. The other is former Mariners pitcher Randy Johnson, who was a teammate of Del Rio’s on the 1983-84 Trojans baseball teams, which also included Mark McGwire.

“Randy was wild,” Del Rio

Denver kicker says his max range could be 70 yards

As I wrote earlier this month, I was in Tulane Stadium back in 1970 when Tom Dempsey kicked his 63-yard field goal that stood as the NFL record … until this season when Denver’s Matt Prater kicked one from 64.

I asked Prater about that today at Super Bowl Media Day.

“It was definitely a goal for me,” he said. “Just being in Denver with the altitude, I knew I could do it. I always knew I had a good leg, it’s just getting the opportunity at the right time in a game. And we were fortunate that we

Denver CB Rodgers-Cromartie, 27, talks retirement

Denver quarterback Peyton Manning, 37, said he doesn’t plan to retire if he wins the Super Bowl on Sunday. Bailey, 35, has indicated something similar.

Instead, it was 27-year-old cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie who raised the possibility Monday.

“I gave myself a five-year goal: If I could just make it five years, I would be all right,” he said. “Coming from a small school (Tennessee State) and of course playing six, it has been a long journey and I am weighing my options. I am still a young guy and not a Champ Bailey or Peyton Manning who have a legacy

Broncos sent praise Seattle’s way today

The Denver Broncos met the media today on this cruise ship at Jersey City.
The Denver Broncos met the media today on this cruise ship at Jersey City.

Denver coach John Fox and six of his Broncos met the Super Bowl media today, and if any bulletin board material emerged, I wasn’t within earshot as it happened.

Fox, for example, was asked if the Broncos are playing their best football of the season right now. He agreed that they might. Then added that he thinks the Seahawks are too. Then concluded that only what happens on Sunday really matters anyway.

Cornerback Dominique Rodges-Cromartie said he doesn’t resent the publicty that Seattle’s “Legion of Boom” secondary is getting, and that they deserve it.
