Seahawks put DE Greg Scruggs on IR, add DE DeMarcus Dobbs off waivers; Lane may share nickel with Burley

The Seahawks have placed defensive end Greg Scruggs on injured reserve three days after he injured his knee against Oakland. Seattle has claimed defensive end DeMarcus Dobbs off

waivers from San Francisco. Dobbs, an undrafted free agent from Georgia in 2011, has played six games for the 49ers this season and has been on their special-teams units as well as defense.

Scruggs missed all of last season following knee surgery. Coach Pete Carroll said following the Seahawks’ win over the Raiders last Sunday that Scruggs had a sore knee that was a different injury than last year’s.

Seahawks bring back Bryan Walters to return punts, sign TE Tony Moeaki to indicate Zach Miller may remain out

Apparently that punt fill-in returner Doug Baldwin fielded at his own 3-yard line last week got Bryan Walters his job back with his hometown team.

Days after releasing him so they go add to a desperately thin secondary for the Oakland game, the Seahawks have re-signed Walters, the wide receiver and kick returner from Kirkland. The only reason Walters had been on the roster since Week 2 until last weekend was to return punts and kickoffs. He replaced All-Pro safety Earl Thomas on punts and then traded Percy Harvin on kickoffs.

Rookie wide receiver Paul Richardson has been the

Seahawks release returner Bryan Walters to add S Terrance Parks; Paul Richardson now kickoff returner

The Seahawks have helped their depth problem at safety while giving rookie Paul Richardson the kickoff — and maybe punt — return job.

Seattle released kick and punt returner Bryan Walters of Kirkland today so it could add Terrance Parks off the practice squad to bolster a safety position that had just three healthy players for Sunday’s game against Oakland.

Walters was only on the roster because the Seahawks had decided after Week 1 that All-Pro safety Earl Thomas was too focused on new punt-return duties. Now, with Walters off the roster, Richardson becomes the apparent kickoff returner one

Seahawks list LB Bobby Wagner out for Sunday; WR Percy Harvin, RB Marshawn Lynch rest instead of practice

The Seahawks (3-2) list Bobby Wagner as out for Sunday’s game at St. Louis (1-4) because of his turf-toe injury. Coach Pete Carroll said today Wagner could miss multiple games but that he does not need surgery.

K.J. Wright is going to start at middle linebacker Sunday, with Malcolm Smith and Bruce Irvin as outside linebackers.

Carroll had already declared tight end Zach Miller (ankle surgery) and center Max Unger out for the Rams game.

Wednesday is rest day in the middle of the season for running back Marshawn Lynch. That is what the “NIR” — not injury-related — essentially

5 cents worth: Seahawks seek new nickel back for Sunday in San Diego; Chargers blow 11-point lead late last night

The Seahawks were in nickel defense — with five defensive backs and two linebackers instead of their base four DBs and three linebackers — on 57 of 62 defensive snaps against Green Bay in the opener. That’s why linebacker Malcolm Smith was a non-factor; he was on the sideline watching nickel back Jeremy Lane play.

And that’s why Lane going on injured reserve with a designation to return in eight weeks and Seattle signing former Carolina Panther starter Josh Thomas yesterday matters more this week than last.

I don’t think the Seahawks will be in nickel as much Sunday in

Seahawks put Jeremy Lane on IR with designation to return; sign former Panthers CB Josh Thomas, OT Andrew McDonald

The Seahawks have indeed used their once-per-season of the injured-reserve with a designation to return in eight weeks on nickel cornerback Jeremy Lane, who re-injured his groin in last week’s opening win over Green Bay. If he gets healthy enough by then Lane is eligible to return for the Nov. 9 home game against the New York Giants.

The corresponding move on the 53-man active roster is Seattle signing former Panthers cornerback Josh Thomas. Thomas said he flew in last night at 9:30 from Charlotte, N.C, from the home he has there with his wife and two-year-old son (named Dallas;

Hawks trade Kelly Jennings to Bengals

The Seattle Seahawks announced this morning that they have traded cornerback Kelly Jennings to the Cincinnati Bengals for defensive tackle Clinton McDonald.

A first round pick (31st overall) by Seattle in 2006, Jennings played in 78 games with 43 starts, with 200 tackles and 47 passes defensed, including a career-high 13 in 2010.

But overall during his career in Seattle, the 5-foot-11, 180-pound corner had struggled with making plays on the ball, with just two career interceptions in five years.

The Seahawks also appear to be pleased with the overall depth at cornerback, with CFL product Brandon Browner
