Confirmed: Trufant takes a pay cut

According to a report from Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com, Seattle Seahawks cornerback Marcus Trufant has taken a hefty pay cut in his base salary for the 2011 season.

UPDATE:
I’ve separately confirmed this earlier report.

Florio reports that according to a source, Trufant’s base salary for 2011 dropped from $5.9 million to $3 million via a new contract signed on August 20.

However, according to the report, Trufant can earn that money back by reaching some challenging incentives, which pay up to $2.65 million based on Trufant earning a spot on the Pro Bowl

The first unrestricted free agent the Seahawks added was quarterback Tarvaris Jackson, who agreed to a two-year, $8 million contract that immediately drew comparisons to Charlie Whitehurst’s deal from last March. While Whitehurst’s contract was technically a one-year, $6.8 million extension – Whitehurst had signed a one-year restricted free agent tender worth $1.176 million before the trade – the structures of the deals for the two quarterbacks are nearly identical.

McIntyre: Player bonuses on hold during lockout

Now that the 2006 collective bargaining agreement expired, the NFLPA decertified and the NFL owners locked out the players – who are filing lawsuits and injunctions against the NFL – a common belief has been that neither side will blink until August or September, when the threat of missed gates and game-checks will be most real.

There is some truth in that, though both sides have plenty of incentives to reach a deal as quickly as possible.

For the owners, it’s about control.

Many NFL teams, including the Seattle Seahawks, were to begin off-season conditioning programs this week. With players barred from the facilities, those programs are on hold.
