Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll has more time on his hands than he usually experiences during this time of year.

“A little more than usual,” he said. “I have to create some activities around here.”

One of the productive diversions Carroll has created is his series of Win Forever coaching workshops. The final one will be held on Friday at Seahawks headquarters in Renton.

The free workshops are sponsored by Nike, and set up as a way to raise money for Carroll’s community service work with A Better LA. Carroll has hosted a series of coaching workshops across the country, including Los Angeles, Dallas and at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif.

The workshop is free, and available to both coaches from all sports as well as corporate folks looking to improve their leadership skills.

Situational sessions

One of the early themes of Pete Carroll’s first Seahawks training camp is the frequent use of game-type circumstances as teaching points. What looked like a team session on the typical two-minute drill recently was actually a great deal more specific.

“We actually worked with a situation that happened in the Super Bowl,” Carroll said. “We just chose that situation at 1:08, tie game, three timeouts to the offense, the ball got kicked off out of bounds at the 40-yard line. We just captured that situation. We went through it today with both the ones and the twos.”

A few minutes with Hawks OC Jeremy Bates

New Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates talked to reporters for about a half-hour today about the changes in store for his new team offensively.

And while Bates offered few specifics in terms of scheme or personnel, he did say that the Seahawks new offense will more closely resemble the Denver Broncos, where he spent three years coaching under West Coast disciple Mike Shanahan.

Hawks announce coaching staff

After a couple weeks of individual names leaking out, the Seattle Seahawks finally announced new head coach Pete Carroll’s coaching staff today.

Only two coaches have been retained from Jim Mora’s staff. They include defensive coordinator Gus Bradley and defensive line coach Dan Quinn, who will remain in the same positions on Carroll’s staff.

The coaching staff includes members with a wide variety of experiences, from college to the pros, with staff members who have won Super Bowls and national championships. Eight of the 21 coaches are former USC staff members under Carroll.

“I’m excited about the makeup of our staff,” Carroll said in a prepared statement. “It’s an energetic group of teachers with a nice blend of experience,” said Head Coach Pete Carroll. “Now we can turn our focus on the task at hand – competing in the NFC West.”

Confirmed: Schneider accepts Hawks GM position

According to multiple reports, John Schneider agreed to accept the Seahawks general manager position. Schneider, 38, had been serving as the Green Bay Packers co-director of football operations, and is reportedly a shrewd talent evaluator. He worked in the Seahawks front office in 2000.

The Seahawks confirmed Schneider’s hiring this morning.

It had been reported that front office executive Floyd Reese was the front runner last week, but with Schneider getting the job, it looks as though head coach Pete Carroll will have a true person to work shoulder to shoulder with, as owner Paul Allen appears to

Report: Hawks hire Brown as WR coach

This report from Knoxville, Tenn. television station WATE has the Seahawks hiring interim Tennessee head football coach Kippy Brown as the team’s new receiver coach, replacing Robert Prince.

Brown’s tenure in Tennessee was short lived. He was brought in by Lane Kiffin in December to serve as his receiver coach, but when Kiffin took the USC job Kiffin remained as the interim head coach until Tennessee hired new head coach Derek Dooley.

Brown has 17 years of NFL coaching experience.

Report: Hawks to interview Gray for DC job

Jason La Confora of NFL.com and Jason Reid of the Washington Post are reporting that Washington Redskins secondary coach Jerry Gray has received permission from the team to interview for the Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator position.

According to the reports, Gray would like to stay in Washington, but does not know what his status will be with Mike Shanahan
