Baldwin: ‘Nothing changes for me’

Doug Baldwin popped a bottle of apple cider — he doesn’t drink alcohol — in celebration at Thursday’s press conference in Renton.

Flanked by general manager John Schneider and head coach Pete Carroll, the Seahawks formally announced a deal with Baldwin that can keep him in Seattle through 2016. He’ll play 2014 on the restricted free agent tender, then be on a two-year extension after that. His guaranteed money is $8.5 million, with the deal reportedly worth at least $13 million total.

“Nothing changes for me,” Baldwin said. “I signed my name to a piece of paper. A piece of paper does nothing for me.”

In the front row Thursday was his Stanford pal Richard Sherman. Baldwin said there were two reasons he came to the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 2011.

First, Schneider had sent him a hand-written letter explaining why he thought Baldwin would be a fit in Seattle.

Second was Sherman, who often refers to Baldwin as his son, though they are more like brothers.

Schneider and Carroll both lauded Baldwin’s work ethic, ability to be clutch and the attitude they say epitomizes what the organization wants to be about.

“Act like a pro and act like a champ every single day, which is what this individual does,” Schneider said.

According to Carroll, Baldwin will be playing split end this year. Baldwin also threw his hat into the punt returner mix on Thursday, though he said he didn’t want to lose out on being a blocker on punt returns.

ESPN’s John Clayton reported Baldwin turned down a four-year, $20 million offer. Baldwin did not address that specifically, but said this deal, which they verbally agreed to around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday before signing Thursday afternoon, allows him and the team flexibility.

“I get the security and when I come up again, I’ll be young,” Baldwin, 25, said.

The competition at wide receiver is heightened this fall. The Seahawks used their top pick in the draft to select wide receiver Paul Richardson and selected Kevin Norwood in the fourth round. Schneider told Baldwin during Super Bowl week in New York, when the team was first having draft meetings, that they were likely to pick a couple wide receivers. Baldwin said he was ecstatic to hear that.

“He just said, ‘Keep bringing them in,'” Schneider said.

Baldwin also pointed out this is not the end for him, so he did not want to dwell on it or make it much of a big deal. He was even hesitant to have a press conference.

“To me, this is just part of the process,” Baldwin said. “I’m not retiring. I’m not in Canton, and that’s the ultimate goal.

“I’m ready to get back to work.”

This guy is great! I’m really happy for him and love the confidence he has in signing a shorter deal so that he’ll be eligible for a bigger payday sooner if he continues to produce!

  2. wazzulander says:

“he didn’t want to lose out on being a blocker on punt returns.”

Is this guy awesome or what?

  3. yankinta says:

Was hoping for $4 mil a year….. Totally psyched that it really is $4 mil a year. I think we offered the Same deal to Tate and Tate took it as an insult.

Really happy to be keeping the cheaper of the 2 players,, :)

  4. AZBubba71 says:

“I’m not retiring and I’m not in Canton, which is the ultimate goal. I’m ready to get back to work.”

Perfect attitude! How can anyone not love this guy?

  5. GeorgiaHawk says:

And the overall better (for the team) of the 2 players.

  6. GeorgiaHawk says:

Baldwin has been one of my favorites since his rookie year.

He’s such a glue player & team leader.
A rare gem of a player that this FO seems to keep finding at a rate that appears to be well ahead of all other FOs.

  7. pabuwal says:

Keep being angry, Doug Baldwin. It works well for you.

  8. SandpointHawk says:

Yep, agreed Angry Doug is mighty fine. IMHO a better teammate than Tater was also. Good keep.

  9. Screw the “keeping the cheaper player;” I’m stoked we kept the better player! Baldwin is a better sport with just as much “edge” and competitive drive. Baldwin is better in the clutch. And lastly when RW gets in trouble is it any wonder the majority of his bail out throws head Baldwin’s way? I believe Baldwin is a better player and a better fit for this team. When Harvin and Rice are both healthy this year, Baldwin won’t bitch about his PT or number of throws he’s getting, Tate would. When some of Baldwins reps get cut back so Richardson, Kearse, and Norwood can get reps, which would make it all about them; Baldwin or Tate?

This was a great draft and a great offseason! Go Hawks!

  10. EzraMelech says:

After watching the press conference all I can say is wow, wow, wow. It’s amazing how much you can learn if you truly pay attention to things. I’ve loved DB since 2011 and was a fan, but after watching the presser today I have a new “greater” appreciation for who he is. GREAT GUY!

I also have an even greater (if thats possible) appreciation for our entire organization. To see how much JS pays attention to games (like he’s a coach) and how much he understands our players, and the philosophy they infuse with the entire organization is just unbelievable. Call me a homer, but I truly LOVE JS/PC.

I also gained a greater understanding of how they envision our team being moving forward (i.e.: building from within rather then going crazy in free agency)

Last but certainly not least, I find it amazing just how different JS/PC talk during press conferences compared to the rest of the league. I’ve thought this for awhile, but after today I truly believe it. Our franchise is/should be a model of how to run an organization.

I now have even more hope/belief that we will become a dynasty. GO HAWKS

  11. I cant believe people are using Baldwin’s signing to rag on Tate. Low class!

Yankinta–NO, Seattle offered Tate something like 3.5 million a year, which he rightly took as insulting. It is. Every single team in the league would offer more than that to anyone with his stats, let alone his ability and performance, which were not adequately illuminated by stats alone.

Baldwin is a fine player, but he’s not in Tate’s league athletically.

I think its odd Seattle will start Baldwin at SE this year. He’s really not fast enough to be a stud SE, he fits better at Fl and slot IMO. Obviously they want to have Harvin in the slot much of the time, but are they envisioning Harvin starting opposite Baldwin at FL?! I really cant see putting Harvin at FL, but what do I know?! Yep, not much…Are they intending to have Baldwin back Percy up at SE?! That doesnt make sense.

And you can book it, even IF Rice makes the team, Kearse will end up beating him out for the majority of playing time and will beat him in every single statistical category.

  12. Ezra–I agree. I hope we manage to keep JS after Carrol hangs it up. I will puke if he ever heads back to GB. We lost Thompson to them buggers, I dont wanna lose JS. In fact, JS is a nice guy and Thompson aint even close, so I much prefer him lol!

And I am very happy to have Baldwin locked up; In fact, I may just buy his jersey. I wasnt gonna buy it unless and until he signed longterm. Too bad its not four years though!

  13. EzraMelech says:

@STTBM. I agree with you as well that I find it kind of disheartening that people are using this as another way to rag on Tate. That being said, I will however say this….. “IF” and I know it’s a big if… but if I had to “choose” between Tate or DB and could only sign one of them (I’d want both) but if I had to choose. I will say I would choose DB (mainly because of his attitude and class) without hesitation.

I agree though, why use this signing to rag on Tate, he’s apparently happy with his decision to goto the Lions. I wish him all the best.

  14. Southendzone says:

Ezra I came away from watching the press conference feeling exactly like you described, DB and Schneider were great. Getting this deal done validates everythign the Hawks stand for.

It doesn’t matter how you get to the team, if you compete, have the right attitude and excel, you’re gonna be rewarded. DB ticks off all those boxes. Having him on the team fighting off the rookies is going to make everyone better.

  15. GeorgiaHawk says:

Correct me if I’m wrong but I thought the Seahawks upped their offer of 3.5 mil a year to Tate after Detroit made him their offer.

Either way I like this receiving group (from top to bottom) better than any group the Seahawks ever had.
That’s if this group stays healthy.
    Please stay healthy!!!

  16. montanamike2 says:

After the 2nd round tender was used, i figured angry Doug would get his 2 mill and change and be one and done. So glad i was wrong and the FO treated him like a SB champ who put up consistently for his career. Thank you Chris Carter, please call him out again on national T.V.

  17. GeorgiaHawk says:

Btw – Acknowledging that Baldwin is a better fit than Tate for the teams success moving forward is not ragging on Tates talent.

It’s simply giving Baldwin his props as a better team player.

Just because one is a better team player doesn’t mean the other one sucks.

Tate said himself he is looking forward to getting more receiving yards in Detroit because they pass more, so he is a better fit for that team instead of being here wondering whether he will ever get a thousand yards a year.
I wish him the best of luck, & I am sure he will get his thousand yards.

  18. seatowntp says:

Passionate Doug Baldwin’s press conference was pure perfection. If you haven’t watched it, please do. It’s easy to see how John and Pete could love DB.

  19. The Chemistry between Baldwin and Wilson is Priceless!

  20. GeorgiaHawk says:

Best comment of the day imo.

  21. EzraMelech says:

    “Slight thread Hijack”

Any “bad” 49’rs news though is good news for Hawks fans. BleacherReport is reporting that Vernon Davis is missing OTA’s and is holding out for a new contract.

I’m sorry, but I’m going to be honest, I love reading about any turmoil or struggles with 49rs. *Grin

  22. stantak says:

    Classy Doug Baldwin

  23. seatowntp says:

Ray Ray, Great link!!! Thank you. I enjoyed it so much that I posted it on my facebook page.

  24. freedom_X says:

Signing the shorter deal I think sealed things. My guess is that Tate wanted a longer contract, thus more total money. Even if Seattle had upped Tate to $4 – 4.5 million/year, Tate wasn’t going to take a 3 year deal.

If it had been a 5 year deal offered to Tate for +$4 million/yr, then we would have seen if he was serious about the hometown discount. Had Baldwin insisted on a 5 year deal, I think he’s still unsigned today.

  25. surelyyoujest says:

STTBM, what ragging on Tate ? Some think he is the better player or teammate……so what ? That’s stating an opinion not ragging on Tate. We know you don’t agree, which is fine…..but disagreeing is not railing on Tate. GT was a big contributor, but it’s entirely subjective who is the more valuable asset to the Seahawks.

Clearly JS and PC have an opinion, and they’ve done what they think is best for the organization.

    Congrats to ADB. Love ya.

  26. @ray – – that link was the best break I’ve had at work all day . . .love seeing Kaep’s career stats and W-L against Seattle.

  27. nickdoneysr says:

tate boinked our qbs wife… he can go mess with other teammates wives and keep our locker room championship quality… thats why the seahawks didnt offer him much because he wasnt worth it in the long run… donut stealin home wreckin traincrash… just hatin to hate now ha… but seriously, russell wilson is the savior of football for seattle and tate is a boy not a man… so go fluff matt staffords lady good riddance to bad rubbish.

  28. montanamike2 says:

nickdoneysr where did you get that from?

  29. Ray_Maines says:

osbrey might still have the best comment of the day, but the Bombshell Award goes to nickdoneysr.

  30. GeorgiaHawk says:
  31. rramstad says:

nickdoneysr is simply spreading an ugly rumor. There’s nothing to back it up, if there was, the media would be all over it…

  32. montanamike2 says:

    Don’t hate on Tate.

  33. ChrisHolmes says:

“NO, Seattle offered Tate something like 3.5 million a year, which he rightly took as insulting. It is.”

I was one of those upset about the Tate offer.

But now that the rest of the story is leaking out… it all makes perfect sense.

  34. nickdoneysr says:

i dont have facts, i doubt there are many out there it was an affair… but if you read between the lines, the hawks lowball tate a guy they drafted in the 2nd round and valued as a 1, and dangeruss gets divorced within a short time period… my diorama points to somebody gettin the shaft for sharing their shaft ha

  35. Awesome news on resigning Baldwin! Yes!

  36. seatowntp says:

nickdoneysr, you should have mentioned that is an unfounded RUMOR, rather than posting that garbage as if it was a fact. That is just negligent and irresponsible on your part. Do you have, or know of, any evidence to substantiate that rumor?

  37. seatowntp says:

Speculation does not equate to evidence!

  38. pabuwal says:

    Russell Wilson
@ShowtimeTate is my friend. Please give him #Peace
    3:56 PM – 7 May 2014

  39. Southendzone says:

    Ray that video was tremendous.

The Tate rumors are baseless but nevertheless fun to speculate on.

  40. Ray_Maines says:

Yeah, honest to God, wasn’t that the best 4:42 you’ve ever spent in your whole entire life? Whoever put that video together should get free beer for the rest of their life. Hell, Buffalo Wings too.

Infidelity is very seldom a public issue, but in this case…..

  41. vichawkfan says:

First off great news for Doug and us fans. Second, speculating on what broke up the Wilson’s is pretty lame. I found her to be a bit of an odd ball though. Maybe RW realized that the rest of your life is a long time.

  42. EzraMelech says:

Guys, drop the Wilson/Tate rumor mongering please. First off that rumor is completely baseless as far as anyone knows. Second, Russell’s asked that his Divorce be kept a personal matter, and as a good fan/person I am going to respect that. The rest of us should as well IMHO….

Besides you know they say that curiosity killed the cat….

  43. montanamike2 says:

If you see curiosity tell him i’m still pissed about him killing my cat!
That’s a crazy rumor that doesn’t even make sense on so many levels.
Today is my 48th birthday and i woke up in my own bed, unlike the jail cell i woke up in over 20 years ago wondering what happened? I don’t hate my birthdays anymore, of coarse, i’m responsible for that too. Today i meet up with Bobby and Slave, i couldn’t be more excited. I think this blog is special and i wish everybody could meet so that we realize there’s a person you met before name calling and mud slinging begins. People aren’t what you might think after you meet them, that’s why i like meeting people in person. Not all people are cool, so a little discernment is good too. I’m not going to hang out with a white supremacist or a pedophile, but i don’t feel that from anyone here. I died at 34, so 14 bonus years have paid off with a Seattle SB, i’ve never had a team ever win anything besides a conference title and it looks like we’ll be contenders for a while. Good time to be a NW guy.

  44. GeorgiaHawk says:

Cool to hear you all got together!

    And happy birthday.

  45. Southendzone says:

Watched the video again, if you put that Gandalf clip in pretty much any video, I’m going to like it.

The shark and cheetah shots are awesome too!

  46. SandpointHawk says:

Happy Birthday montanamike2, hope you have a great Birthday and congratulations on your new path…

  47. montanamike2 says:

Thanks for the birthday greetings fellas.

  48. DFloydd says:

Flappy Honkin’ Birthday MontanaMike! Enjoy. Life is a gift.

  49. HawkfaninMT says:

    Happy B-Day MTMike!

Sorry i can’t make it tonight, but lets plan on getting all the MT guys together at some point this season.

You guys rolling into BWW all Hawk Geared out in true Seahawks Insider Style?

  50. I’m gonna throw on my Super Bowl champs tshirt and Hawks cap for later after we hear from STTBM.

I really didn’t think Baldwin would get resigned like this but it’s awesome he’s in the fold for a few years.

  51. chuck_easton says:

Buy STTBM a pint for me (I’ll tell you where to send the tab) and let him know we don’t HATE Tate.

It’s just Tate chose to leave Baldwin chose to stay, so of course we LOVE the guys wearing our team’s uniform and anybody that left (even for a valid reason) are scum and dead to us!

Nothing personal, it’s just business (in my best Godfather impression)

  52. Happy Birthday MontanaMike! Glad you guys got together. Thanks for all your contributions – and best wishes for health, happiness and many more Super Bowls!

  53. Southendzone says:

Oh yeah I don’t hate Tate, but I would have brought it up if someone else didn’t, just to get STT riled up.

  54. Macabrevity says:

I really want Baldwin as our PR guy. He has that quick first step as well as reliable hands and decision making that you need for the position. I’m sure ET would be great too, but would rather have Baldwin back there for reasons that are pretty obvious on a run-first team that relies on a shut down secondary to win games.

  55. Macabrevity says:

One of the things I appreciate about the regulars on this blog, as well as the host site, is we don’t go in for tabloid news stories like what brand of underwear a guy has, or who’s dating whom, etc.

Even mentioning non-stories that represent what is surely a difficult time in the lives of players and public figures we admire is truly tasteless.

  56. montanamike2 says:

    Thanks again guys.

  57. SaigonSun says:

MTM2 HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!! ( You old fart, lol)

  58. chuck_easton says:

Just saw the breakdown of Baldwin’s contract and it isn’t that awful.

Year Base Salary Pro-rated bonus Cap Hit
    2014 1,400,000 1,600,000 3,000,000
    2015 2,800,000 1,600,000 4,400,000
    2016 4,000,000 1,600,000 5,600,000

It includes a $4.8M signing bonus pro-rated at $1.6M per season, and the way you get to the $8.5M in guaranteed money is:

    4.8M signing bonus + 1.4M 2014base guaranteed + 2.3M of the 2.8M 2015 base fully guaranteed on Feb 6, 2015. Total $8.5M

Contract also has incentive clauses for the 2015 and 2016 seasons (but not for this year) that will pay Baldwin an additional $2.3M if he gets 55 or more receptions AND 1,000 or more yards, AND 9 or more TD’s in that season. Not sure if the incentives are $2.3M each season or $1.15M available each year.

All in all, it isn’t a bad contract.

Just as a comparison and not because I hate Tate STTBM, Tate’s contract with Detroit.
Year Base Pro-rated Bonus Cap Hit
    2014 1,500,000 1,600,000 3,100,000
    2015 3,750,000 1,600,000 5,350,000
    2016 4,750,000 1,600,000 6,350,000
    2017 6,000,000 1,600,000 7,600,000
    2018 7,000,000 1,600,000 8,600,000

    Tate got $10.5M guaranteed 8M bonus + 1.5M 2014 base + 1M of 2015 base.

Once again our FO has proven they know how to work the Cap while making their own happy.

  59. jawpeace says:

RayM, thanks for the video that was the best thing since ice cream. Okay that was for the Doug Baldwin types who don’t drink alcohol; for those that do, Ray that video was the best thing since beer. And if you haven’t watched it yet get off your ass slacker and click the link.

My favorite thing in the Georgia link video. The end, ET saying, “Could you please throw me some water.” And you should know the rest!

  60. Happy Happy B-Day MontanaMike, you seem to be a good-natured sort and I have always appreciated your (mostly:) even keeled comments.

Ray, that was a bad ass video, thanks for the link.

These are the golden years for Seahawk fans, you never know when this ride will end, so let’s enjoy the hell out of it!

  61. CCVI–Mike is good natured in person, but he is a total badass as well. He’s got some incredible stories…He’s been through a lot, yet came through with sense of humor and empathy intact. He’s a fine man and I’m proud to call him my friend.

Ray–Fantastic video! My family and I watched it and howled with laughter! “You two are dumber than a bag if hammers”…lol!
