Sam adeptly handles media horde

Michael Sam took to the podium Saturday at the combine and used the time to answer multiple questions about coming out, and remind reporters he would like to simply be known as a football player.

Since that sounds like a good idea here, let’s talk a little about that.

Sam said he is a “pass rusher” when asked about the tweener label for him. He said he can play defensive end and linebacker. The latter is where most questions about Sam’s ability arise. He showed at Missouri, where he was SEC co-defensive player of the year, that he can sack the quarterback. But, he looks slow at times in coverage.

One place Sam appears to fit is on special teams.

Since the initial media fervor about Sam, he’s been keeping a low profile. He said Saturday he was busy preparing for the combine because his “100 percent” focus is on preparing for the combine and draft.

Initial projections were that Sam would be selected between the third and fifth rounds.

  1. I hope he gets a shot and finds a team to play for.

The NFL is so wacky, with a “sure thing” like Currey out of the league already, and a guy who wasn’t even invited to the combine is now the Superbowl MVP. Seems like there is a place for Sam in the NFL, but you never know.

He was a finalist for defensive player of the year, he’ll most definitely get a shot.
