Back when he was in 10th grade, young Russell Wilson went to the Peyton Manning Passing Academy.
“I liked him so much back then and still do,” Wilson said. “The way he plays the game and he’s a tremendous individual. Has great attention to deal, great leadership, has won a lot of games. We’re going to have to play our best football game and we know that.”
Wilson said he was actually in the group of campers Manning coached. When the 2012 NFL Draft rolled around, Denver took at look at Wilson and met with him. Manning was there and told Wilson he felt like he had seen him before. That’s when Wilson explained his visit to the academy.
“His knowledge separates him from everybody else,” Wilson said. “That’s what I am trying to work to one day.”
> Wilson said he reached out to Drew Brees and other players who have been in the Super Bowl in the past. Wilson went to the Super Bowl last year to watch the game and get a feel for how everything was because he thought there was a chance the Seahawks could make it there this season.
“I think one of the biggest things is you have to understand the difference in time,” Wilson said. “In terms of the week in preparation, but also the game. You have all the warmups like you normally do, then you have people singing and all that kind of stuff, so it takes an extra 25 minutes. That’s the great part about it, the emotional part about it, but you have also make sure you don’t get warmed up too early and not getting too fired up too early.”
> Running with his usual efficiency, Wilson said he’s already taken care of his ticket distribution and family arrangements. He knocked that out Monday.
> Wilson was asked what he thinks of the saying “defense wins championships” and said he thought that was true. He went on to say he thinks you need two of the three phases — defense, offense or special teams — to be top-tier in order to make it this far.
> Asked if he’s thought about how winning the Super Bowl would add to his legacy, Wilson said he hasn’t thought about that, but rather how it would be a legacy to be the first team to do it for the organization.
> On the topic of being the first team since 1990 to not have any players with Super Bowl experience, Wilson said it just shows how good the roster is. “Our football team is extremely young. We want to win a lot of Super Bowls and to do that, you have to win the first one.”
> Wilson said he played in the snow once while at Wisconsin, but couldn’t recall the specific game.
