Bevell on Harvin: ‘It’s fun to have him out there, I know what he can do’

Here’s what Darrell Bevell had to say Tuesday:

(On how does he know what to expect from Rob Ryan…) “I don’t think you do know. What we focus on is what we do and how we’re going to do it. Obviously there are things and there are going to be tendencies and all of that, who their players are, what they like to play, but they can change it up at any moment. We have to be ready for the specific looks that they like to do and we’ll see if we hit that play versus that coverage and we’ll be ready to go.”

(On the Saints pressuring Russell Wilson the last time the teams played…) “At some point he’s going to want to bring the house at you, and you have to be ready to answer that question. Fortunately the one time it happened we were able to get a big gain. Sometimes you hope that that runs them out of it if you have the answer. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn’t. He still came after us a couple more times after that, but you have to be able to answer that blitz question every time.”

(On Zach Miller…) “He’s a true tight end. He’s not a wide receiver that’s playing the position; he’s a true tight end. We ask him to do a lot of things, and obviously in the run game he’s huge, there’s time he’s in at protection, and then we expect him to be able to run the whole route tree. You’ll see him lined up at tight end, you’ll see him lined up outside, we like to move him around and do a lot of things with him and he’s on it all of the time. He’s a true professional; he’s great at that position as a tight end.”

(On what was the cause of the struggles offensively the last four weeks of the season…) “It goes back like you said four weeks and we take a look at all of it. Getting those plays is number one and I know we already had the conversation about having 50 plays, so that goes right to third down, we’ve had some great weeks on third down and we had some that weren’t very good. When we’re in the 50s in total plays that’s where our third downs have been hurting us. So we have to really work on that area. Some of the redzone that we have looked at, we have to get back better there. We climbed all the way to top five or whatever and then we had some issues. So we have to make sure that we can finish drives when we get those opportunities down there.”

(On if all of this head coaching talk has been a distraction for him…) “The cool part is that it was last week. So we’re all full game plan mode this week and that’s in the past and we’re completely focused on New Orleans.”

(On how did the interview opportunities go for him…) “They went fine. It’s better to ask them. I do what I do and then whatever they have to say is what they have to say. I don’t know what they thought of it.”

(On how much did interviewing for Arizona last year prepare him for this year…) “I think they were great experiences for me last year. Just to learn what the interview process is. As I came out of it things that I wish that I would’ve done better, and then give it another shot.”

(On how was it to have most of his receiving core on the field…) “We like to have all of those guys out there at every position; we’d like to have the full numbers. It’s fun to have them out there and we just have to continue to keep working them and see how they react. There are a lot of guys that are a little bit touch and go so we’re seeing how they come out of the week.”

(On how Percy Harvin is coming along …) “Just having him out there speaks to some of it. It’s good to have him practicing. As we keep saying, it’s a day-to-day thing, see how he reacts the next day with the workload that he gets every time we add a little bit too it. It’s fun to have him out there. I know what he can do. He had two spectacular plays the last time he was on the football team for us. We’re really hoping for him he can continue to work his way in.”

  1. I’m pretty sure what Bevell is saying is that we need “MORE COWBELL” on offense to get things rolling.

  2. Definitely need more Percy, ‘dat for show!

  3. WiscCory says:

I hope some day that I can say that about Havin, too, Coach Bevell.

Galena, nice reference. Now I can’t get “Don’t Fear the Reaper” out of my head.

Duke, I think you hit the nail on the head in the earlier Bevell thread. Consistency in the OC role is important for the QB. Case and point is Jay Cutler – great arm, but a different OC and offensive approach every season.

  4. Im hearing Pete Droges If you dont love me Ill kill myself with the relentless cowbell now…

Percy also got wide open on a deep seam route vs Minny, RW just got Buck Fever as he has so often this season and threw late and over Harvins head…So its not like there were only two plays he mattered. The guy really did impact the game.

THough it was obvious he needed to work on his understanding and his chemistry with RW…

Love me some cowbell. . . Now I’m a huge Hawks fan and have been for years but I dont have close to the knowledge that so many do on this blog – that being said – can someone explain the 50 play reference bevell makes?

  6. WiscCory says:

I interpret that if you only have 50 offensive plays, that’s not enough. It means you’re not converting 3rd downs. You’re not getting enough chances to run plays, and not running the ball enough, and not controlling the game.

I think you normally want to be in the 65 play range on offense.

  7. Some of Pete Carroll’s speaking style has rubbed off on Bevell.

The build up on Harvin is just crazy. Biggest let down in awhile if he doesn’t get out there after all this.

  8. HawkFromDay1 says:

If Bevell bails, can we go get Rob Chudzinski? Did a heck of a job with Cam Newton and Carolina…

  9. WiscCory says:

HD1 – I agree. He also did a heck of a job getting the ball to Josh Gordon in Cleveland this season (and could do the same with Tate/Harvin).

  10. princeaden says:

If Bevell goes, I think it becomes Cable’s baby. Just a guess.

  11. toastmaster says:

    Thanks WiscCory :)
