The Seahawks have more turmoil, suddenly.

Mike Silver of NFL.com is reporting that Brandon Browner is facing another PED suspension.

You can read the story here.

Update: Silver was just on NFL Network and never used the phrase “PED” when talking about Browner’s supposed suspension. Browner’s agent also says Browner is not facing a suspension for PEDs.

Here is the updated story on NFL.com. It’s here.

Another update, 4:46. Now, this:

Silver says center Max Unger and cornerback Richard Sherman recently talked to the team about issues like this.

On Twitter, Browner denies the story is true.

Sherman also appears to have commented.

Here’s NFL.com’s Jason LaConfora disputing his own colleague’s report:

Silver also reported that the Seahawks have signed Antoine Winfield following the suspension of Walter Thurmond.

NFL.com’s Ian Rapaport said on NFL Network, during an appearance with Silver, that is not a done deal yeat.

  1. Someone’s going to look really stupid here…

  2. grizindabox24 says:

BB’s agent has denied the report to John Clayton

  3. I guess the Incognito saga stalled and nothing is newsworthy.

  4. grizindabox24 says:

    Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora 42s
Spoke to a source with knowledge of Brandon Browner’s status who said he did not have another positive test for PEDs …

  5. grizindabox24 says:

    Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora 4s
Source would not elaborate on any other possible violations of NFL policy that may have result in suspension but adamant nothing w/PEDs

  6. MikeFromNewJersey says:

Where there is smoke, there is fire… Good Lord!!

  7. thursday says:

Wow. If Browner’s telling the truth, that is really low on their part.

If not…well, it wasn’t like he was gonna play anytime soon anyway. =/

  8. sluggo42 says:

    GAWD!

But I’m glad they signed AW. Hope he still is in shape…

  9. If this proves to be untrue, I hope browner is able to sue the league for defamation of character.

  10. grizindabox24 says:

    Peter Schaffer ‏@peterjschaffer 50s
Brandon Browner isn’t facing a suspension for PED’s the report is 100% wrong.

  11. thursday says:

Wait, we signed Winfield? Haven’t seen that anywhere

  12. grizindabox24 says:

This is purely speculation that I have heard, but it is possible he was hanging out with WT3…

  13. Southendzone says:

Grindz, that’s the only thing that makes sense now. It’s not a PED suspension (read how BB and his agent word their denials), but could be some type of suspension.

  14. grizindabox24 says:

NFL.com reported the Winfield is still deciding and not that he agreed to sign

  15. Ian Rappaport said Winfield hasn’t decided if he will return yet and nothing is definitive at this point.

  16. grizindabox24 says:

    Davis Hsu ‏@DavisHsuSeattle 34s
Clayton just said you need to test 3-4x in the substance program before you get 4 game suspension (not PEDs)….dayam.

  17. Man. I am sure it’s not true but I can’t help but think sometimes that the NFL and especially the national (east coast bias) media will stop at nothing to tarnish the Seahawks. There’s no question most cannot stand that the little team in Seattle is doing great and their beloved media darlings (see Manning, Luck, Rodgers) have all lost and are not #1. So why not try and ruin the Hawks image. Although, Hawks haven’t helped themselves in the last few years with the suspensions. I just feel that it’s happening everywhere on every team but the focus is always on Seattle being cheaters or losers. Aldon Smith gets wasted, arrested and even found with weed I believe and all we hear is how he needs help and poor Aldon and when can he be back to play for the whiners. Double standard much? I’m telling you there are many people who cannot stand Pete’s forward thinking approach. It’s the good ‘ole boy syndrome in the NFL. But I digress….once again typing without thinking….

  18. Two sources say that Browner’s suspension for marijuana use, while one source says it was for adderall use. The distinction is critical. As a repeat offender, Browner could face an eight game suspension if he violated the PED policy. A substance abuse policy violation would be for four games.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Sunday that Seahawks cornerback Walter Thurmond is facing a four-game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. Thurmond is expected to drop an appeal of his suspension next week in order to return for the playoffs.

Browner also missed the final four games of last season for violating the league’s PED policy. He’s currently recovering from a groin injury and was not expected to be available until mid-December, coach Pete Carroll said last week.

Silver reported Monday that the Seahawks are trying to sign veteran Antoine Winfield to help replace Browner and Thurmond. Silver reports that cornerback Perrish Cox also is expected to join the team.

This suspension will end Browner’s Seahawks career, according to Silver’s sources. His contract expires at the end of the season. Browner’s agent declined comment to Silver, citing the confidentiality of the league’s program.

Silver reports that the topic has already been brought up in a recent team meeting. Center Max Unger and cornerback Richard Sherman addressed their teammates recently. The message: We’re going to the Super Bowl. If any of you want to do this stuff, go ahead. You won’t be coming with us.

Silver will have more on the topic Monday night on NFL Network’s “NFL Total Access” at 7 p.m. ET.

  19. madpunter88 says:

A looming suspension would explain why PC said they were waiting until the right time to make a decision about what to do with BB.

  20. ljarllrajl says:

Why do I have the feeling that Jim Harbaugh is behind all of this?

  21. grizindabox24 says:

    Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora 37s
At one point Sunday a deal between Winfield and SEA seemed imminent but he remains at home mulling his options with his family. Stay tuned

  22. thursday says:

Agreeing with the jumping on the image tarnishing bandwagon rn. Considering that Rosanthal specifically put PED in the initial headline, only to change it just a few mins ago. I smell an agenda here.

  23. grizindabox24 says:

Looks like BB was hanging with WT3

  24. grizindabox24 says:

    Michael Silver ‏@MikeSilver 36m
The Seahawks will move on without Brandon Browner, who faces another PED suspension. Will discuss on @nflnetwork soon http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000288008/article/seahawks-brandon-browner-facing-suspension-for-peds

This tweet from Mike Silver seems to contradict what Silver is saying now denying he reported it as PED

  25. If Browner is suspended for substance abuse, would the suspension be effective immediately? If so, it would pretty much match his time-table for returning from his groin injury, wouldn’t it?

  26. mystireeman says:

browner doesn’t deny facing suspension for non-PED, (like thurmond.)

and winfield? didn’t he retire? the game can get away from you quickly, especially if you weren’t staying in shape for it.

between lane & maxwell, they seem to like Maxwell more. I’ve seen him in there even when Browner and Thurmond were available.

    next man up!

  27. Lane is the best special teamer in the nfl. Carroll puts that into the equation.

  28. grizindabox24 says:

Trufant had a tryout today and Perrish Cox will be in tomorrow

  29. Seriously, BB is facing a substance abuse suspension, just like Thurmond–only worse?! What in hell is going on with these idiots?!

Damn, that will end BB’s NFL career, more than likely. What the hell was he thinking?!

Winfield has them by the balls. They will have to agree to keep him on the team through the playoffs or he wont sign–and I dont blame him.

As much as I hate the media for bashing Seattle but not teams like Washington that have almost as many suspensions, Something is Rotten in Denmark! If Browner gets suspended for substance abuse…qwap! My head is gonna explode!

  30. sluggo42 says:

Wouldn’t it be awful if BB is the one who fed WT3 the dope?

  31. grizindabox24 says:

To top off the world of non-football in Seattle, Chuck Armstrong is leaving and Chris Hansen is slamming the Times Editorial Board

  32. grizindabox24 says:

STTBM, why is the suspension BB facing worse than WT3?

  33. bulldog80 says:

Cue the people saying how it was just pot and how this is ridiculous………….

  34. grizindabox24 says:

STTBM, there was no way Winfield would come back without being signed for the remainder of the season, even before the BB news. No way he agrees to come back just for 4 games.

  35. Perrish Cox?! Isnt he the dude accused of having sex with a woman while she was passed out? The guy who insisted he never had sex with her, then turns out she’s pregnant and its his?! But somehow he avoids any criminal conviction?!

Sorry, bbmate, this guy is scum, and I dont want him on the team. I hope we dont sign him and if we do, Im hoping he sucks and gets cut.

Trufant?! HOly buckets, we might as well re-animate Dave Brown, Frankenstein style, as have Trufant. He’s a great guy, but has been dead man walking for years. He’s more done than a Denny’s steak!

  36. grizindabox24 says:

    This did make me laugh

    Brett Wise ‏@thebrettwise 5m
So @Moffitt74 gets back in to town, and we may be looking at two Seahawks failing drug tests? Coincidence?

  37. Griz–Because he may get 8 games. And anyway, losing BB like that is worse than just losing WT for a month.

  38. Last time I checked, Browner was out for the foreseeable future. Now he’s facing suspension? Yawn.

Thurmond will be out 4 games? More yawning.

This team is solid. We won’t miss a beat. These are just distractions that are temporary. I think…wait a second…yeah, I’m over it.

    GO HAWKS!

  39. Schefter just said on SportsCenter that BB is suspended for 1 year.

  40. grizindabox24 says:

STTBM, it would only be 4 games for BB also. PED and Weed fall under 2 different programs and are not combined.

  41. Is this some crappy April Fools joke?! Please tell me it is…

  42. ljarllrajl says:

Schefter says the appeal has already been denied. What the heck is going on?

  43. grizindabox24 says:

Seems that BB had more skeletons in his closet is the Schefter report of a year suspension is true.

  44. sluggo42 says:

I knew I had a crappy feeling going into this bye….

  45. MoSeahawk12 says:

Not PEDs, other drugs, one year. These guys are a joke. Where’s the defensive leadership? This is going to sink this ship.
    Legion of dope!!
    See ya Browner.

  46. MoSeahawk12 says:

    Come on Pete!!
What the hells going on in your locker room?

  47. grizindabox24 says:

this will guarantee that the Hawks will be signing a couple corners tomorrow.

  48. grizindabox24 says:

    NFL Drug Policy:
    1st violation=enter 1st stage,regular testing
    2nd=enter 2nd stage,possible fine
    3rd=4 or 6 game susp
    4th=1 year susp

  49. grizindabox24 says:

    Chris Mortensen ‏@mortreport 20s
Browner appeal for substance abuse policy already has been heard. Means he won’t play again for Seahawks. Also a free agent in March

  50. I knew a guy that played in the NFL. He said coaches ‘encouraged’ players to smoke dope, stay at home and play video games instead of going out to the clubs, drinking and getting into trouble. He also said that it was a great pain reliever.

The sooner it gets legalized in all 50 states, the sooner we’ll all be in a better place. MJ is not performance enhancing. If anything, it can cause paralysis by analysis but that’s about it.

    :-)

  51. MikeFromNewJersey says:

Who cares about BB.. The guy is overrated and kills us with dumb penalties.. Im sure he would have killed us in the playoffs with his hackness.
This does not worry me one bit. Next man up!

  52. This is so f-ed up. These guys are tarnishing my favorite season as a Hawk fan.

  53. So Todd gets back in to town, and we may be looking at two Seahawks failing drug tests? Coincidence?

(Sorry Todd, we do appreciate your work here!)

  54. MikeFromNewJersey says:

Probably half the NFL is on drugs.. These guys all smoke weed.

  55. sluggo42 says:

    What a totally weird day

  56. Browner may not have been playing as well as he was pre-suspension last year, but he was outplaying Maxwell, Lane, and Thurmond. Thats why he was starting. He was outplaying them in games, and in practice EVERY DAY. Carrol and company knew this was coming for a long time–you think they didnt want the kids to beat out BB?! Of course they did! Never happened…

Saying we wont miss BB is not going to make it so…

This is a blow, but not necessarily insurmountable. The worst part is that it makes Seattle look bad, its pretty bad when a guy gets suspended twice in two years, and three guys from one position group test for multiple banned substances over two years…not to mention Irvin, and the rest…

Its indicative of larger problems, IMO.

  57. All I know is coming into the biggest game of the year this news conveniently comes up 1 week before. Suspicious much? Make it a little more even playing field for the Saints? Me thinks so….

  58. grizindabox24 says:

    Oh no, the conspiracy theory

  59. Seahawks dont seem to need any help in shooting themselves in the foot. No conspiracy necessary, this team is its own worst enemy…

The most talented team I have ever seen is disintegrating from within…All Carrol had to do this year was lead the team into becoming something greater than the sum of its parts…to this point, we are less than the sum of our parts and falling apart…

  60. Losing Browner is a blow only because Thurmond is out.

  61. Legion of Bong.

  62. grizindabox24 says:

and of course, STTBM has to go all “end of the world”…

STTBM, step back and take a deep breath

  63. It’s not a conspiracy theory, he failed a drug test, multiple times. This is what happened. If it comes back that Sherman or Thomas are under fire, I might put a bullet in my head. This season was so hard to find negatives in, it was a dream come true. First the performance enhancing accusations from last year, now this. To say this won’t be a distraction is an obvious lie.

  64. Sorry, no super bowl rings for dudes who can’t put the bong down for a couple of months out of the year.

  65. The NFL really needs to crack down on suspension leaks. There is no way this should be out there in the media, and those leaking the information should be punished.

  66. SandpointHawk says:

Don’t bogart …pass it over to STTBM, and dude pass those Cheetos to me… :)

  67. Griz–Its not the end of the world at all. But it is indicative of a lack of leadership at the highest levels for Seattle. A lack of discipline. And that is troubling. How bad does it have to get before even the Homers admit theres a serious problem in Seattle?

  68. Lane, Maxwell and Shead will hold down the fort until Thurmond is back. Don’t forget that there are 44 other men on the field on game day. If this team is truly special like we believe they are, they will rise up and face this, defeat it, move on and make this a non-story.

  69. But now we know why Seattle had Thurmond drop his suspension. BB wont be there for the playoffs, they had to ensure Thurmond would be available.

  70. grizindabox24 says:

Heard Browner was going to run for Mayor of Toronto

  71. chuck_easton says:

What this means is very likely Browners 4 game suspension last year was for illegal substances and Browner said it was Adderal.

So if it is a one year ban that would make sense. A player can’t get to a one year ban until they have already been previously suspended for 4 games.

And it is one calendar year.

The earliest Browner could come back is December 2014. His career is over. Sounds like he and Thurmond were partying together. Now the question is how many others are going down?

Way to ruin a great season guys.

Even if Seattle wins the SB this year they get their own asterisk.

  72. grizindabox24 says:

KBrooks, fairly certain Seattle will sign 1 and maybe even 2 corners tomorrow

  73. MoSeahawk12 says:

Browner and Sherman are saying it’s not true. Sure guys, just a little mix up. Browner, enjoy the CFL. The NFL isn’t hiring. This is just dumb, irresponsible, selfish and the end of the Legion of busted.
Hope Winfield found the fountain of youth during his four months of retirement.

  74. grizindabox24 says:

Mo, Browner and Sherman never said it was not true, what they did say was it had nothing to do with PED

  75. shoehawks says:

What the hell! The Seahawks lose two players who they have viable replacements for; and people are willing to jump ship! Fine, I would prefer not to hear any more of that reactionary wining anyway. Do you remember when we were thrilled as hell when the Seahawks won on Monday night football to get one of their 2 victories that season? Of course you don’t. Sit back, take it easy, and enjoy one of the best seasons the Seahawks have ever had. This is a team that lost their three best offensive lineman for significant time this year and is currently 10-1 …best in the league. If they lose Russell Wilson, you can freak out. Otherwise, enjoy the ride.

  76. grizindabox24 says:

shoehawks, IMO, the Hawks do not have a replacement for WT3 covering the slot.

  77. chuck_easton says:

Lets just hope Sherman learned how to flush the system before his testing or this could get really ugly.

And once again Seattle is the laughingstock of the NFL.

  78. Chuck–Now THAT makes some sense. Browner (or his agent–same thing) LIED and said it was PED’s/Adderall, but it was for substance abuse. Now he’s out a year, effectively ending his career. Im pissed at him, but I feel bad for him too.

Im pretty sure its possible to get busted once or twice for weed, and then even alcohol triggers a suspension. Anyone know if thats how it works in the substance abuse program in the NFL?!

If thats true, for all we know he had a couple beers and got busted…still, failing 4 tests in three years is a big fat truckload of stupid…

Nice going Browner! Im gonna miss watching you play, but damn are you stoopud!

  79. There wont be any asterisk when we win the SB with backups at CB outside Sherm. IF anything, it will make this year even more special. The only way there will be an asterisk is if after the fact someone tests positive for PED’s. While a suspension is a suspension, Substance Abuse IMO, is not as bad as PED’s. And winning anyway after losing key players to suspension should not taint a season.

We still have 5 regular season games plus the postseason to get through, dont lets count our chickens till they hatch…

  80. The worst of it the prospect of seeing Cox in Seahawk colors. I can just hear the Hawk Haters saying it fits….Cox is scum. Id rather have Etric Pruitt back than him…

  81. Dukeshire says:

Do the Cowboys have an asterisk for their rings in the ’90s? No. Should Seattle win this year, neither will they.

  82. edstang45 says:

Just reported BB suspended for a year…see ya

  83. Hey, A.J. Jefferson is available, right? :P

  84. madpunter88 says:

Chuck, last year’s suspension may not have been what precipitated the year long for substance abuse. Didn’t Browner also have a positive test back when he was with the Broncos many years ago? Maybe I am misremembering that but it seems like we’ve been through this discussion before. Oh yeah, last year when half the secondary also was suspended.

  85. jamielarrydon says:

This the same exact date that Adam tweeted a suspension for BB.. I think there has been a mix-up.

  86. There’s no mix up.

  87. jawpeace says:

I think Chuck has it right last year was not PED but drugs and therefore and a repeat of drugs got him one year.

  88. Henny penny, the sky is falling!!!!!

I don’t get the line of thinking where you would lie to say you were suspended for a PED rather than a recreational drug?

If this SB would have an asterisk for having players that smoke marijuana then you better go ahead and throw one on every other SB since 1967. And that would defeat the purpose of having an asterisk.

  89. It if was weed our DB’s got caught for do we get to call them the Legion of Doob?

  90. jawpeace says:

I was thinking about how much this one week has changed free agency this off season. The question should the Hawks resign Browner is now a big NO. And WT3 value is greatly diminished and the Hawks probably could resign him for cheap if they wanted. The question is do you want a talented, injury prone, selfish pot head, on your team? The next few weeks is audition time for Maxwell and Lane. How they do will determine whether the Hawks pursue WT3 at all or wave goodbye.
