Sunday Primer: Seahawks defensive line rotation is looking fresh, bacon cupcakes and chalk talk

Good morning.

Still, the Seahawks are yet to play. But, we’ll start with them before heading into an abbreviated version of our Sunday stuff.

I wrote about the Seahawks’ defensive line rotation today. The percentage of snaps the Seahawks’ line is playing is way down for most most of the guys.  For instance, Cliff Avril said he is accustomed to playing about 80 percent of the snaps. He played 49 percent of the snaps last Thursday and 58 percent in each of the two prior weeks.

“I think all of our snaps are down a lot this year,” Avril said. “At the end of the game, we are still fresh. Playing 75, 80 snaps a game, toward the end, a 2-minute drive you’re blown. I think in the long haul, toward the end of the season, where you’ll have 1,000 snaps, you’ll have 500 and not be as beat up.”

Avril was asked if the reduced time on the field was weird.

“Yeah, but I’m getting used to it,” he said. “It’s a change for everybody on the D line. Once again, I understand why. We’re doing well, so what’s to complain about?”

For comparison, here are the snap counts for players officially listed as part of the defensive line among the top-five defenses, according to Football Outsiders’ advanced metrics, from Week 7. Take this with a grain of salt since each scheme isn’t the same, and there are deviations like Bruce Irvin being listed as a defensive end thanks to Pete Carroll’s “we play 4-3 with 3-4 personnel” approach, but it still illustrates the point:

Seattle Seahawks
Bruce Irvin, DE (LB) 56 snaps, 75 percent
Michael Bennett DE, 50 snaps, 67 percent
Clinton McDonald, DT 41, 55
Tony McDaniel, DT 40, 53
Cliff Avril, DE 37, 49
Brandon Mebane, DT 34, 35
Red Bryant, DE 32, 43
Chris Clemons, DE 31, 41
O’Brien Schofield, DE 9 12

Kansas City Chiefs
D Poe, NT, 56, 100
M Devito, DE 38, 68
T Jackson, DE 32, 57
A Bailey, DE 13, 23
A Toribio, DE 1, 2

Carolina Panthers
C Johnson, DE 51, 84
G Hardy, DE 50, 82
S Lotulelei, DT 41, 67
K Short, DT 36, 59
C Cole, DT 26, 43
W Horton, DE 18, 30
F Alexander, DE 15, 25
M Addison, DE 9, 15

New York Jets
M Wilkerson, DE    75, 99
S Richardson, DT    72, 95
D Harrison, NT    15, 20
L Douzable, DE    5, 7
K Ellis, DT    1, 1

Tampa Bay Bucs
G McCoy, DT    40, 87
A Clayborn, DE    37, 80
D. Te’o-Nesheim, DE    37, 80
A Spence, DT    31, 67
G Gibson, DT    13, 28
T Scott, DE    9, 20
W Gholston, DE    7, 15
D Bowers, DE    6, 13

Both Carroll and DC Dan Quinn said the rotation was by design, not because they were able to pick up such capable rushers in the offseason. The Seahawks are fourth in the league in sacks after seven topplings of The Leaning Tower of Palmer last week. We’ll see if this rotating is able to keep them fresh and injury-free until the end of the season.

In other Seahawks news, Percy Harvin will not play Monday. WR Golden Tate and LB Bobby Wagner should be good to go. Safety Jeron Johnson is still out because of a hamstring problem.

Wagner healed a high ankle sprain about two weeks ahead of schedule, according to Carroll.

  1. I would like to have seen the clip of the pass to Miller after the chalk talk.

  2. I would like to have seen the clip of the pass to Miller after the chalk talk.

  3. Where in the world is Jesse Williams? I see he is on the roster, but haven’t heard anything about him lately.
Maybe I’m naive but if I was a rookie trying to make a team, I would be hanging around, going to meetings etc…
    Just wondering…

  4. SandpointHawk says:

On 8-26 the Seahawks placed rookie Jesse Williams on injured reserve…

  5. montanamike2 says:

He’s probably out of town rehabbing, i hope he’s functional next year.

  6. Thanks Sandhawk, I saw he was on IR, just wondering why he wasn’t around the VMAC.

MontanaMike, he’s in australia, I just think it’s odd he is not here with the team. unless the rehab is not going well.

  7. Sorry SandpointHawk, it’s early LOL “Sandhawk”

  8. GeorgiaHawk says:

Good article Todd, and thanks for the snap counts. I hope it pays off at the end of the season.

  9. GeorgiaHawk says:

I don’t know if this has been posted yet but I thought it was good stuff from MRob.
    Check out the video too.

  10. Southendzone says:

I don’t always watch 22 minute you tube videos, but when I do, they are about Seahawks teams from the 1970’s.

Does anyone remember the old Paper Airplane making contests during halftime at the KingDome? Those were AWESOME.

  11. That flashback video sure brought back the memories! That Buffalo game wasn’t on tv in Spokane so I had to listen on the radio. Great to see Steve Myer. I saw his last play which was on the Cheney field (before it was red) in the scrimmage. After “Heartburn” Hardy sacked him they drove an ambulance on to the field and hauled him away never to return. A bit of buzz kill heading into the season!

  12. That video was awesome! It’d be cool if the players on the current roster watched it. Sherman Smith was great. I love that he’s coaching with us today. He’s kind of the full circle connection along with Raible (love seeing him on special teams).

Cool ideas Todd. Good job with the blog and in making it your own. The throwback videos have been a treat.

    GO HAWKS!

  13. edstang45 says:

Great Stuff Todd. 77 was my first year as a Season Ticket holder and that video brought back lots of forgotten memories of players like testerman, and Beeson. Also that Buffalo game was the highlight we bragged about for a long time. In those days the Kingdome was a crazy crazy p[lace to see a game. Wins werent needed to fire the fans up then we were just glad to have a Team, The 12th man wasn’t as sufisticated as they are now but we had Bill{willy} the Beerman, and the wave baby, and it was loud!!!! and the famous KingBeers were soooooo cheap…..good memories

  14. Southendzone says:

Ok old school Hawk fans, did any of you have some of these glasses? I think McDonalds gave them away, we had about 4 of them back when I was a kid.

  15. I don’t have those glasses but I do still have a couple Seattle World’s Fair glasses from when I was 13. And I have all the Seahawks newspapers that were published in those days.

  16. Those days meaning the late ’70’s not ’62 when the fair happened.

    @Oldslow

It’s a poor quality video because my capture sucks, but here you go:

  18. Dukeshire says:

South – I remember the paper airplane contest very well. I think my plane made it three rows. Lol. I too remember the game they handed out mini rubber footballs. Uh, bad idea. Several came raining down from the 300 level.

  19. sluggo42 says:

Sean McGrath with a nice catch for the chiefs, his beard is gihugic

  20. Jacksonville’s really showing that you can’t just gather up the spare parts from another team’s model and expect them to make your system run.

It’s kinda painful watching the scoreboard on that game, especially since we can’t gain any ground on SF with a win tomorrow, the way they’re playing JAX.

  21. Dukeshire says:

How about this: Seattle has won 6 straight Monday night games.

  22. bird_spit says:

    Excellent format…love the bacon.

  23. Dukeshire says:

Former Seahawk Kris Durham with a huge catch in the Lions comeback. What a fun game to watch

  24. The Cardinals need to sit Palmer now.

  25. Hate the thought of AZ trading Fitz to SF(?)

  26. With Fitz eating $18 million next year, I could care less if he goes to SF.

  27. SandpointHawk says:

Unless the Fitz wants a ring over the money at this point he’ll never be a Seahawk…but the fantasy I just had was priceless…

  28. looks like the “playing the seahawks” jinx is going to come to an end with Arizona – they are smacking Atl pretty good right now!!!

and how about WA thumping Denver right now?

  29. And now it’s a whole new ball game

  30. sluggo42 says:

    Wa. thumping the Broncos?

And now rgiii left knee hurt…

  31. Matt Ryan looks like Blaine Gabbert without his 2 stud WRs.

I can only imagine Russell Wilson with 2 studs like Julio Jones and Roddy White.

  32. montanamike2 says:

If we were trying to impress the English with our type of football, i couldn’t think of a better game than the 49rs and Jags, not. I wonder if there were more people watching than in St. Louis tomorrow night at our game? At least it’ll be national televised.

  33. GeorgiaHawk says:

Will Atlanta shop Tony Gonzalez before the trade deadline?

  34. That would kill Matt Ryan’s performance even more.

  35. If Sidney Rice had Matt Ryan as his QB in Atlanta and got as many targets as Roddy White – Rice would put up better numbers than White would.

If Wilson (or Bevell) had White – White would get about two targets per game and people would wonder what was wrong with him.

  36. The 2 TD passes by Rodgers so far tonight are insane! Did you see the little windows that he was able to put the ball through? to be fair, both were also just great catches by the receivers as well.

  37. In no world has Sidney Rice ever been better than Roddy White.

  38. raymaines says:

The trade deadline is early afternoon on Tuesday. I could see the Seahawks making some super home team friendly trade for Tony Gonzalez but otherwise nothing.

But just to be stupid: How about trading James Carpenter for a starting left guard? How about trading trading any one of our D-linemen for a starting right guard? How about trading next years draft for a starting right tackle?

I mean, you know, how about……

  39. Vikings have too much talent to be this bad…

  40. GeorgiaHawk says:

This is what we need to do before the trade deadline. Trade next years #2 for Tony Gonzalez.
Then trade our next three #1 picks to Houston for JJ Watt.
Then have Carroll talk Hutch and Walt out of retirement to play LG & RG so they can get a Super Bowl ring.

    And yes I’ve been drinking.

  41. You forgot about trading the 2017 number 1 Draft pick for Hasselbeck so he can win a SB as a backup.

  42. Gotta think that Frazier is on the hot seat in Minny!

  43. banosser says:

SF next 2 oponetnts Carolina & @ NO then Hawks
NO remaining schedule includes Dallas, SF, Hawks, Carolina twice
    Hawks have No & SF…

Hopefully NO can handle SF at home.. and split with Carolina.. and we run the table at home..

    = HFA

  44. GeorgiaHawk says:

Darn pabs you are right I totally forgot that.

  45. I’m fully expecting Rams to have some tricks up their sleeve tomorrow night… remember we lost last year on the dumb fake FG…
