Typically, this is not good initial news for an athlete.

I will just about bet he is done for the year. Bowie and Bailey better get tuned up quick like.

  2. Southendzone says:

Conflicting information here, Ian Rapoport tweeted that he is visiting Dr. Robert Anderson in NC.

Not sure who’s got it right, James Andrews is the Knee guy.

  3. RDPoulsbo says:

This shouldn’t be a season ending injury this earl, but it probably means missing significant time nonetheless.

  4. Dukeshire says:

Andrew’s is *every* joint guy, and pioneer in sports medicine. Regardless, no idea either where Okung is heading…

  5. princeaden says:

What happened to Unger in 2011?
I believe that was a bad case of turf toe? Please let me know if I’m wrong.

  6. chuck_easton says:

It was a bad turf toe injury that put Unger on season ending IR in 2011. But remember, there wasn’t the ability to IR with intent to return in 2011.

If Okung is seeing Andrews it likely means surgery and that would mean 8 or more weeks and possibly the season is over.

    I expected this.

  7. WiscCory says:

Pierre Garcon had this type of injury last season, and missed 6 games over a 9 week period. He tried coming back after 2 weeks, played 2 games, then they sat him another 5 weeks (including a bye week).

  8. FleaFlicker says:

Sounds like we’ll get him back in week 11

  9. chuck_easton says:

    FleaFlicker,

    Not necessarily. Simple math.

2 games already played. Okung will be listed as OUT for game three.

If he is placed on IR – Designated to Return he must miss the 8 games AFTER he is placed on IR. The player can start practicing after the 6th game of the designation, but he cannot play until after the 8th game.

So 2+1+8 = 11 games missed. Earliest he would be back would be for game 12 which is immediately after the bye week. That is unless the team puts him on IR – Designated to return PRIOR to Sunday. They are running out of time for that.

I’m guessing the earliest Okung might return is Monday night December 2nd for the Saints game. That still would mean he’d be available for the final 5 games and the playoffs.

  10. chuck_easton says:

Unless the team decides to carry Okung on the active roster and just list him OUT each week he’s likely not coming back until December at the earliest.

  11. HawkfaninMT says:

I am with Chuck… I am also really hopeful they figure out his designation before kick off on Sunday. It would be stupid for them to place him on IR-Return on Monday. That would just put him back one game later in the season
