Here are a couple main storylines gleaned from the Seattle Seahawks announcement that the team has made cuts to get down to the 53-man roster.

Having leading sack man Chris Clemons begin the year on the active roster is big news, particularly with all of the nagging injuries on the defensive line heading into a Week 1 contest at Carolina.

Instead of being released and once again hitting the free agency market, 36-year-old cornerback Antoine Winfield chose to retire.

With the impressive play of Walter Thurmond during the preseason, along with quality depth at the position like Jeremy Lane and Byron Maxwell, the Seahawks could afford to part ways with Winfield.

Seattle also announced that the team traded an undisclosed future draft choice to Jacksonville in exchange for defensive tackle D’Anthony Smith, pending physical examinations.

Smith was originally drafted in the third round (74th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft by the Jaguars out of Louisiana Tech.

After spending both the 2010 and 2011 seasons on injured reserve, Smith saw his first action in 2012, playing in eight games and recording 10 tackles (six solo) before being placed on injured reserve (head) on November 28.

Seattle releasing fullback Michael Robinson opened up a spot for second-year pro Derrick Coleman. The UCLA product is a good story; he overcame a hearing impairment to make Seattle’s final roster.

Eight rookies made the final roster, including five draft selections.

All players waived today are eligible to be claimed off waivers by other NFL teams at 9 a.m. on Sunday.

Teams can start setting practice squads at that time, once waiver claims have been settled.

  1. tealskin says:

Can we expect them to pick up another TE and maybe drop a LB?

  2. SaigonSun says:

Wow, the wait is over. I like this stuff. Mayowa and Lotulelei made it. So did Kearse and S. Williams. This is as good as we can get it at this point. Great.

  3. Nomdeguerre says:

We are thin a tight end. Perhaps they are looking to the waiver wire? Fells is likely practice squad, and maybe they see more future upside there than current ceiling McGrath?

  4. wabubba67 says:

Hoping that Parker, Shead, and Harper make it to the practice squad. Not surprised at all about Guy.

Wondering if JS/PC will try to claim former first round pick Danny Watkins from Philadelphia. He’s a guard from Baylor.

  5. sluggo42 says:

Was I the first to say Guy would be cut? Yes, I was…

    Thank you.

Did I also say no more than 4 rooks would make the squad? Us I did.

Hand me a plate of crow… Yuckkk

    Congrats to all 53

  6. tchristensen says:

It is strange they’re only carrying 2 tight ends. Perhaps they may try to sign Darren Fells after tomorrow. It is odd.

  7. HonHawksLSB says:

Gotta give Duke credit he called Winfield not makin this team.

I’m surprised but love the youth in the secondary

  8. Wish we could keep 18 guys on the PS…

  9. edstang45 says:

Eric does this mean Clem is close to being back, has he practiced and how does he move around?? pressure pressure pressure, I think it’s our achilles heal at this point….When you look at our DB’s it just doesn’t seem fair does it…LB’s look young and very strong and Fast!! O-line will make us all proud, RB’s no rest for all defenses, Hope the RealRob best of luck…Didn’t we hear Harbaugh quote “Hey their the Hawks they can do what they want!!” yea baby lets run em into the bay

  10. jawpeace says:

They have 53 players on the roster now, but something tells me these might not be the same 53 on the opening day roster. The bubble players better not take a big breath and chill a little. But still give 100% every play, every practice.

  11. Edstang45: Clem is close, but he has not practiced with the team. All the work he’s done has been with the training staff after the team is done practicing. But he is moving well. I think the hope is he can get back on the field after a couple weeks of practice.

  12. sluggo42 says:

This also tells me that Bowie shoulder injury isn’t as bad as initially feared

  13. Sooo glad Eric was wrong on ware. Dude was violent, made people miss and could pick up a blitz very well for a rook from what I saw. A little bummed on McGrath. I thought lotulelei was more of a practice squad guy. I liked his fast play and tenacity but he got lost too much for the active roster in my humble opinion. Nice to meet you all. I have been reading daily and a crazy fan for 12 years or so. Eric provoked me to engage based on Ware so now I am over the registration hump and will be active in comments as well.

Eric, I do respect your opinion and have enjoyed your insight for years. I just strongly disagreed on one player. Glad to join the writing community as a result though.

  14. sluggo42 says:

    Welcome Keiffer,

Glad to have ya join up, ya bandwagoneer…

    Just kidding mate

  15. This roster is soooo much more talented than the previous ones of the PC/JS era. I doubt we see the kind of movement* we have in years past. If one of out cut TEs makes it to the practice squad, that gives us depth at TE.

*What do I know though? Its anyones guess.

  16. tealskin says:

Kief, McGrath is too slow for this team. Agree on Lotulelei and think he’ll be cut at the first add.

  17. tealskin says:

McGrath’s beard wasn’t a good look for a slow guy either.

  18. Ha slug!

I live in Cali and am a season ticket holder that flys up for 3-6 games a year. Even under Mora…lol. No bandwagon here…actually scary that my friends here even know our players. That’s a new one for me.

Teal, I get the speed thing but miller isn’t a speed demon. Not too compare their skill set by any means. Just saying….good blocking and proficient route running should have landed him a #3 I think.

  19. tealskin says:

If McGrath could block like Miller he would still be around.

  20. Anyone know if Walters is a ps candidate?

  21. tealskin says:

I’m guessing they think they can land somebody better and the odds are probably good.

  22. If he could block like miller I wouldn’t be bummed he didn’t make the team, I would be bummed he wasn’t #2. Only comparing the fact that miller got 142 yards against Atlanta with a torn fascia….so speed isn’t the end all of evaluation. I don’t believe he should have got the job over Wilson. I am just questioning why we have sooo many linebackers and let a good player go. I trust tons of people know better than me. Just questioning…

  23. “Eight rookies made the final roster, including five draft selections.”

I don’t think anyone was predicting that. Certainly not me. I think I had one of the higher predictions at 5 or 6. I’d think they try to put Lotuleilei on the PS once Irvin comes back.

edstang, you’d have to assume they think that CC will contribute before week 7 at the very least since they didn’t PUP him. Week 8 is probably the earliest he could’ve if placed on the PUP. He’d be eligible to play week 7, but you’d think they’d want to give him more than one week of practice before playing significant time.

Surprised that they only kept 9 DBs, even with them not keeping Winfield.

The Hawks really did free up a lot of cap room with this 53. They have almost 11.5 mil in cap space now, at least according to spotrac. This means that their cap for next year would be at least 134.5 mil in 2014 if the cap was the same as 2013, which it won’t.

  24. Doesn’t experience in the system play a huge role though? How many free agents have come in and killed it for us in the last 10 years?

  25. MikeFromNewJersey says:

I like everybody else have been scratching my head with this roster. I think its safe to assume they plan on picking up a TE on waivers. I actually thought Helfet looked pretty good but maybe he lands on the practice squad. I can see us picking up TE Matt Mulligan off waivers, hes a very good blocking TE.
Also in very concerned with the DLine. We dont have any Legit backup nose tackle. I hope McBane stays healthy

  26. sluggo42 says:

Kiev, I live an hour north of LA
    Where Are you?

  27. DreadHawks says:

does Irvin count toward the 53? If not who gets it week 4. Gald to see so many youngins crack the roster. Hope Harper make it to PS.

  28. We need Mike Rob back. I hope to hell they can resign him and make that happen. He’s a big, big part of this team. He can run block well and catch well, but his ability to pick up blitzers is what separates him from the rest. Coleman just didn’t impress me enough in that regard and Spencer Ware…well I would say he is average at best in all those skills. Only thing I can think of is that they both play ST’s and Rob doesn’t. Still hope we can bring him back.

  29. McBane is an awesome nickname for Mebane, even if it was unintentional.

They must be convinced that Willson is ready to log significant time. He looked good in preseason. He does add a dimension with that speed.

I wouldn’t think that they claim a TE actually. I think they assume that McGrath, Helfet, or at least Fells will be available if and when they want another TE. Just a guess.

  30. DreadHawks says:

I love our LBs! I thought this was going to be our weak link. Great group that can only get better IMHO.

  31. It’s fun to cheer for the back-end guys and sad when they don’t make it. They must have a plan in mind for tight end. I thought McGrath was pretty solid. They may have an idea of picking up someone else’s cut.

I liked the idea of Harper. Didn’t see enough to know the reality, but hope he sneaks through to the PS (though I’m sure someone else can make a good case for Clark or Walters.)Sometimes they need a year on the PS: Kearse being a prime example.

I’m less enamored with Lotulelei. Maybe it’s the hair. A few key stops in real games, and I’ll cheer for the hair, too.

The big surprise for me is keeping both Bailey and Bowie, a move I like and one which shows how difficult it was to make the team. A couple of extra big athletic guys will ratchet up the pressure on the rest of the O-line to perform. Cable’s got his hosses.

When you look at the quality of all 53 guys, you see just how hard it must have been for any one individual to make it. You can’t add one without popping another one out. Says a lot about the 8 rookies that made it.

I’m especially glad that Mayowa and Schofield made it.

  32. Dread, Irvin doesn’t count on the 53 until week 5 since he is out the first 4 games. I’d guess that Lotuleilei or Morgan gets cut when he comes back.

  33. Sluggo…I’m in Huntington Beach. Not a lot of hawk fans here…lol

  34. edstang45 says:

Welcome Keif…Game chat is something ya gotta enjoy too if your home watching…the 12th man here is very opinionated, and very passionate,…wouldn’t have it any other way, ya goota love em all..even bbnate…Go Hawks…by the way anyone else watching the Georgia-Clemson game…burnin the barn so far!!

  35. montanamike2 says:

I think Lotulelei, Baily and Bowie are the first to be released when other players get back or other ones picked up. Lotulelei doesn’t seem to weigh enough to bring anybody down.

  36. MikeFromNewJersey says:

Not many hawks where I live either.

  37. MikeFromNewJersey says:

Also we’re going to probably have to put a QB in the practice squad.

  38. DreadHawks says:

    Thanks bbmate!

  39. I could see Lotu cut if we can find another TE.

here’s a talented guy cut from GB:

  40. Who would have thought that Gus Bradley would have so much D line depth that he could help out his old team?

D”Anthony Smith has been buried on Jacksonville’s depth chart for a couple of years.

    His Scouting Report from 2010:
2010 Rated no. 5 DT in draft. Projected to be drafted in round 2
    2009 Senior Bowl Invite…
2008: 13 GP; 13 GS; 27 Sol-65 TT, 8 TFL, 5 SK, 3 PBU, 3 QBH; Earned first team All-WAC honors for the year … Named first team All-Louisiana by LSWA…Led team with five total sacks and third on team with 65 total tackles

  41. I meant buried on Jax depth chart this year, and on IR for a couple of years. but you know that already.

  42. MikeFromNewJersey says:

I hope this new guy can play the nose. We are very thin inside.

  43. D’Anthony Smith showing inside strength from DT position
    DT #5 sack at 1:40

  44. chuck_easton says:

Interesting breakdown by position. I could see one of the young o linemen getting cut after all the teams have finalized their rosters and PS.

Better chance of getting the guy through waivers and on to the PS once teams have set themselves for the season.

Can’t think they will really go into the season with only two TEs.

  45. beavercleaver says:

I hear ya MikeFromNJ, Hill is out with a bad gun, Mcbane (intentional;-)and McDaniel have bad groins (we’ll be on crotch watch all week to see if they play) They cut McDonald, Howard AND Siliga? I hope this Smith guy they signed is good cause I don’t know who’s going to stop the run on Sunday!

  46. MikeFromNewJersey says:

@beavercleaver…”crotch watch” best line of the summer..

  47. Heard Tru got cut from the Jags. Kind of a bummer. I was hoping he’d help them and do well as the nickel guy.

  48. yakimahawk says:

Man if your 30 years old and on the Seahawk’s roster and NOT a stud ALL PRO year after year you better watch out, your job is not safe! I love it, this is what Championship multi-Super Bowl winner front ofices do!

  49. One thing I love about this regime is that even if you’re a 4th round pick , you’re getting you’re walking papers if you suck in camp. I was not at any practices or anything, but if they think Harper sucks enough to not warrant a spot on the roster – then they have my full support (not that they care or need it).

  50. Can’t remember the cut to 53 ever having been so exciting, so many surprising names made it, and so many surprising names got cut. I agree that number 53 better sleep with one eye open, I assume a TE will be signed on Sunday.

  51. GeorgiaHawk says:

With that kind of logic Moffitt should have been cut his first camp.

  52. After he was given the right guard job when he was drafted?

  53. GeorgiaHawk says:

been saying that we keep two TEs. And Ware.

  54. GeorgiaHawk says:

Never should have been given anything. He should have earned it.

  55. Hawkjitsu says:

Anyone interested in taking a guess as to whom the starters will be on the OL and DL to begin the season???

  56. jchawks08 says:

I think they’re going to roll the dice with 2 TE’s for as long as they have to. But like everyone else, it does seem like an odd position to go this thin on.

  57. jchawks08 says:

Hawkjitsu, I’ll take a guess: Okung, McQuistan (Carp isn’t ready yet.), Unger, Sweezy, Giacomimmi(sp?). For the DL, I have no idea. Red, Mebane, and ?….

  58. AaronCurryIsBUST says:

Hey fellas. Just stopping by to remind you all that I indeed was 100% right about Aaron Curry being a terrible pick and guaranteed bust from day 1. That said, I’m glad that worthless oaf is done and I’ll be enjoying our triumphant Superb Owl campaign as we raze the rest of the NFL leaving bodies like that crybaby Jim Fraudbaugh in our wake.

  59. Hawkjitsu says:

jchawks- I totally agree on the 2 TE’s. It makes me think that JS & PC are content with finding another teams cut victim and turning him into a star, or they believe one of our cuts will make it to the PS and be ready when we need him.

I also made a list of available QB’s after cuts. We’ll be fine with RW and T-Jack, but maybe we find someone for our PS.

(These first 7 are QB’s that I DOUBT we go after…or any other team)
    Trent Edwards

(These are the QB’s that someone MIGHT go after.)
    Thad Lewis
    Chandler Harnish
    Ryan Griffin
    Rusty Smith
    Caleb Hanie
    Mike Kafka
    Dennis Dixon
    Jordan Palmer
    GJ Kinne
Aaron Corp – He was waived/injured. Hasn’t really had a shot.

(Here’s 2 guys who, in my opinion, we should try to put on the PS)
    Matt Scot
Greg McElroy – I know, I know. The Jets cut him. The JETS! He’s also as mobile as Honey Boo Boo’s mom with ankle weights on. But the trick-shot QB has a place in my heart. Me and my teammates have tried and failed. A lot.

  60. Hawkjitsu says:

acib – I’m surprised you didn’t show up yesterday. You do know he wasn’t on our team anymore, right?

  61. Hawkjitsu says:

Oh yeah. Vince Young should be on my list of QB’s to consider.

  62. SandpointHawk says:

You might want to redo at you QB list. Many of those gentlemen are not eligible for any practice squad…

Practice squads are considered to be for developmental purposes. Therefore, veterans are not eligible to be signed to the practice squad. In fact, players with more than one year of accrued NFL service are not eligible. Here is a closer look at the eligibility requirements.

A player is eligible if he does not have an accrued season of NFL experience. Players gain an accrued season by being on the active roster for at least six games.
If a player has one accrued season, they can still be practice squad eligible if they were on the 45-man active gameday roster for less than nine regular season games.
A player is deemed to have served a season on the practice squad if he remains on the practice squad for at least three weeks. Players are eligible to be on the practice squad for two seasons.
Players can be eligible for a third practice squad season if their team maintains no less than 53 players on the active/inactive list at all times.

  63. SandpointHawk says:
  64. montanamike2 says:

ACIB Yes you were right, not that we didn’t find out, but you called it.
Are you gonna change your handle now that he’s out of the NFL?
Nothing bugs me more than someone dominating the game until they get a payday and then mail it in. Actors do that for millions too just based on name recognition. Even though it’s on my movie channels all the time, i still can’t watch Cowboys and Aliens. I’m a Seahawk fan but not a Hudson Hawk fan.

  65. raymaines says:

Whoever is managing Seattles Salary Cap should be in the Ring Of Honor.

Oh, and can we please have Oakland’s first round pick for the next few years? Thank you.

  66. excellent article ray, thanks.

  67. Don’t understand why both Ware and Turbin are on this roster- one or both will have to be inactive every week. With the injuries on the DL I am really surprised that they didnt keep an extra guy there.

I really don’t think lotulelei is NFL ready yet- he made some great plays against the 3’s not many against 2’s. can’t really help on ST since he will be inactive. Again surprised they didn’t use this posistion to keep another DL guy

Speaking of ST- someone said earlier that Coleman/ware made the team because they played ST and MRob didn’t – you call yourself a fan? Dd you not watch the gems last year. MRob was a ST regular.

  68. Hawkjitsu says:

Sandpoint- I know that. Give me a little credit. lol. I should have worded it better. I only meant for Scott to be on the PS. But it’s my fault for sounding mentally disabled. It was late and I had a few.

  69. I’m still not clear if B.Irvin is a DE or LB?

  70. Hawkjitsu says:

klm – He’s been playing LB, and if nothing horrible happens regarding our DE’s, I think they keep him there. But he’s still gonna get his LEO snaps and rush the passer. Even at LB he’ll get after QB’s. He’s going to be a force.

  71. raymaines says:

That’s OK KLM, nobody else is either. In PC’s system there isn’t the difference we are used to seeing. That probably drives the X and O geeks crazy, but I’m just sitting back and enjoying the chaos and confusion it causes.

  72. So far, SEA’s ’13 draft was pretty good. With a fairly stacked roster to break onto, only 4 of 11 draftees were waived, a coupla injured players, one IR’d and the other still on the PUP, and the rest have made backup spots. Better than expected.

    2 30 (62) Michael, Christine RB backup
    3 25 (87) Hill, Jordan DT backup
4 26(123) Harper, Chris WR waived
    5 4 (137) Williams, Jesse DT IR
    5 5 (138) Simon, Tharold CB PUP
5 25(158) Willson, Luke TE backup
6 26(194) Ware, Spencer RB backup
    7 14(220) Seymour, Ryan G waived
7 25(231) Powell, Ty DE waived
7 35(241) Smith, Jared DT waived
7 36(242) Bowie, Michael OT backup

  73. “Greg McElroy – I know, I know. The Jets cut him. The JETS! He’s also as mobile as Honey Boo Boo’s mom with ankle weights on.” -Hawkjitsu

This is now the line of the summer!

Week 1 o-line: Okung, Carp, Unger, McQ, and Breno. I think Sweezy goes in sometime in the second half when Carp wears down.

d-line: Red, McBane, McDaniel, and Schofield. Hard to say with the injuries. Avril would be at leo if ready to play.
