Good morning. With the Seattle Seahawks cutting down to 53 players, we will keep you up to date with all the transactions as we learn about them here.

And with Michael Robinson being released today, it appears the Seahawks will let another veteran player go.

According to Jason LaCanfora of CBS Sports, the Seahawks plan to release veteran cornerback Antoine Winfield today.

With young corners like Jeremy Lane, Walter Thurmond and Byron Maxwell playing well, this move always was a possibility.

Add in the fact that the team can save $1 million by releasing Winfield, along with the idea that he’s not part of the long-term future of the team, and the move seems reasonable.

Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com writes that the Seahawks were the unanimous pick to win the NFC West by the group of Around the League writers.

Jayson Jenks of The Seattle Times writes that rookie running back Christine Michael is talented but raw.

Ben Stockwell of Pro Football Focus takes a closer look at some of the good performances by Seattle players in the Seahawks-Raiders game.

Clare Farnsworth of Seahawks.com talks with bubble player Allen Bradford, who says he understands the business side of football.

Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com writes that Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians provided some sounde advice for players who had not been cut by Friday: “Don’t buy a car yet.”

Danny O’Neil of 710 ESPN Seattle tells us what we learned about the Seahawks from exhibition play.

University of Washington product fullback Johnathan Amosa was released by Green Bay.

  1. So it’s starting to look like the ‘hawks are going to go with 5 CB’s and 5 safeties. That would be my guess anyway. Who stays, and who is destined to become the next Jacksonville Sea-Jag?

  2. montanamike2 says:

I was busy yesterday with painting, when i finished for the day, my friend showed up and we went drinking. It was hot and all i had to eat was ramen for lunch, all day! I got loaded and stumbled a bit(lots), first time i’ve ever been refused service at one of the places and we hadn’t even started drinking yet WTF!!! Fortunately there’s a ton of breweries in Bozeman, one of them owned by my friend Matt. My head is killing me as i write this, but i really wanted Mike Rob to stay and now i’ll eat my crow. Am i allowed to use bbq or hot sauce? I’m pissed at the Billing judge who game a non existent sentence to a school teacher who had a 3 year relationship with a 14 year old girl who then committed suicide, he got 30 days! Too bad he doesn’t live in my neighborhood or i’d pay him a visit in the middle of the night.
    I’m rambling and hurting.

  3. Sekolah: I would say Ron Parker, DeShawn Shead and Winston Guy are all possibilities to make final roster if Winfield is cut.

  4. The Amosa cut by G.B. is an intriguing one. I wonder if he might not be coming to Seattle for a visit given the latest news…

  5. montanamike2 says:

Pete and John might pull someone off waivers and utilize them properly, i hope we get a few more gems.

  6. Southendzone says:

Montana mike with the post of the week. Good luck with the hangover. MCDonald’s hash browns are step 1.

  7. Eric, I really like Shead and the way he has developed so far in his 2nd year with the Seahawks. Safety definitely seems like a better fit for him. I can’t see him making it through waivers to the PS, not with Uncle Gus taking a careful look at who’s filtering through Seahawks waivers.

Parker would be a nice option in the event that T3 succumbs once again to the physical punishment of the NFL, as he seems like a good candidate for that nickle spot, but that spot is probably Lane’s to lose in the event that Thurmond goes down.

  8. montanamike2 says:

Southendzone thanks for the advise, yeah i’m in a bad way.

  9. Hawkjitsu says:

The Tim Tebow Experiment has FAILED. New England released him this morning

  10. Interesting that the judge whom montanamike refers to is the oldest son of Washington Redskins’ legendary quarterback Sammy Baugh. Terrible ruling.

Regarding Winfield, I presume he didn’t show enough in the pre-season games and training camp to justify his salary. If WT3 stays healthy, it probably won’t hurt the Seahawks chances. But that’s a big ‘if.’

Hope they re-sign Mike Rob at a lower salary.

  11. Time for Tebow to go to Canada. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are hurting for QBs.

  12. “The Tim Tebow Experiment has FAILED.”

    LOL

  13. grizindabox24 says:

Tebow can not throw well enough for the CFL

  14. Tebow seriously needs to embrace the idea of a position change. Hasn’t God explained that to him yet through prayer? He sure got the message through to Aaron Curry as for what to do in the next stage of his football career,.

  15. Hawkjitsu says:

I agree with all above on poooooor, pooooooor Timmy. If he wanted to do God’s work, then he should….because I’m sure God is in heaven yelling “BE A FB, YOU FREAKIN’ SQUARE!”

  16. tealskin says:

Wish Tebow and the rest of the Kardashians would just go away.

  17. Hawkjitsu says:

    grizindabox24
    AUG. 31, 2013 AT 8:22 AM

Tebow can not throw well enough for the CFL

You are correct sir. Tebow probably can’t throw well enough for the UPS.

  18. lol, tealskin! me too.

  19. I had thought they would keep Antoine for the year, but after watching a healthy Thurmond III it seemed pretty apparent he is claiming the nickel CB spot. I’d still love to see them keep Winfield. the dude could help us win a playoff game or two.

  20. chuck_easton says:

Tebow refused to consider a position change to have a chance to stay in the NFL. With the millions he got being a pre rookie wage scale 1st round draft choice there’s no way his pride would let him accept less than 100k to be a CFL backup.

  21. montanamike2 says:

Tebow can’t even throw a Don King boxing match.

  22. Just a quick poll. Who should leave, me or ACIB/yank/wabubba67/hawkjitsu/Cindy?

  23. tealskin says:

Are we running out of room?

  24. MattandCindy says:

Wow. GROW UP YOU CHILD. Aren’t you supposed to be an adult?

  25. montanamike2 says:

    Why leave?

  26. tylerwyler says:

I’ve heard it suggested that Tim may have a learning disability, and that play book retention is essentially impossible. I don’t want to bag on a guy that may have a disability, so I’ll leave that part out of the equation, but he may just not be educable enough to pick up the FB or TE positions in a reasonable amount of time. He doesn’t really have the tools to be a passer, and the CFL and arena leagues are passer leagues – even more so than the NFL.

It may be time for Tim to just buy a white suit and a large tent and get on with his next career.

  27. tylerwyler says:

You just got scolded for real, BB!

  28. oh yeah, its a football blog. thought I was in jr Highschool for a minute there.

Without Winfield, and as concerned as JS seems about saving money and going you. Let’s say they keep an extra young player at both CB and S. —

CB – 6 – Sherm, BB, Thurmond, Lane, Maxwell, Parker
    S – 5 – ET, Kam, Maragos, Guy, Shead
LB – 6 – Wags, KJ, Smith, Bradford, Farwell, Morgan (Irvin)
DT – 5 – Mebane, McDaniel, Bennett, Hill, McDonald
    LDE – 2 – Red, Howard
    Leo – 3 – Clem, Avril, Schofield

    27 on Defense.
Morgan gets cut when Irvin returns
McDonald could be on the bubble if all the other DTs get healthy
Shead and Parker live on the bubble this year too.

    PS – Mayowa, Lotulelei
    IR – Williams

  29. Hawkjitsu says:

Oh well. I really do hope that Eric reads your comment and shakes his head, with that ‘What a baby’ look on his face. Really?!? A poll on who should leave a blog that is FREE-FOR-ALL? Just sad, bro. But no hard feelings. Like I said, I’m here for the HawkTalk.

  30. tealskin says:

Stevos, Think I’d rather keep Winfield at reduced salary and let Parker or Guy go.

  31. How surprised would everyone be if MikeRob and Winfield wind up back on this team in a week at minimum contracts?

They might both rather play for a super bowl team than sit and wait for the phone to ring. Schneider may know this too well.

  32. tealskin – pretty sure the reason Winfield is cut would be because he said NO to a reduced salary.

  33. Bbmate–ignore the occasional troll. You should stay at least for our occasional scraps!

  34. Hawkjitsu says:

bbmate – Listen brother. If I offended you, I apologize. I assure you that I’m not that long list of people. There is proof. A few months back that MattandCindy was arguing with some poor guy and I politely asked him to stop and grow up. I just want football talk. I think if we’re both adults we can push this aside as heated stupidity that men often engage in and try to get along. And my earlier comment about I’m right, No I’m right was a joke directed at all. It didn’t land well.

“WHY CAN’T WEEEEEE BE FRIENDS, WHY CAN’T WE BE FRIENDS!”

  35. raymaines says:

Jimmy Clausen and Vince young are both unemployed as of right now. Brady Quinn is reported to be in a foul mood.

  36. tealskin says:

If Winfield has no takers on the open market then the discussion can begin for real. WT3 has always had talent. Injury waiting to happen? Does anyone really have confidence at that position?

  37. Hate to see Winfield cut. Wish to God we had him last season…I don’t think cutting so much leadership is wise but I guess we try to win the big game with mostly babies…

Mayowa makes the roster. Parker to PS. Guy cut–unless the cut Johnson. I don’t think Lane earned a spot but he makes it on talent and last year. He’s an outside corner, not a nickel back.

Trufant likely done in NFL. I will miss him.

  38. confidence in the CB position? I think Carroll is building the deepest and youngest group of CBs in the league. When they let Browner walk away after this season, instead of paying him a premium contract, they won’t miss a beat.

  39. Tebow is a worse qb than Kelly Stouffer!

  40. Hawkjitsu says:

Is that why he started that t.v. dinner company???

  41. piperfeltcher says:

Anyone know a site that will be streaming the Huskies game tonight?

  42. Seahawks should re-sign Marcus Trufant for five minutes so he can retire a Seahawk.

  43. Curious about this roll over cap. If the cap is 128 and we roll over 6, we have 134 cap right? If we use this cap number, what happens the following year, aren’t they going to have to to cut back dramatically to the 15′ cap and wouldn’t that be a even a more trying problem then trying to figure to roll cap space over. If we are wheeling and dealing to roll cap over, how much are we going to have to do to meet the cap in 15′. It seems like its going to cause an avalanche effect on 15′ just to get back to the cap. Maybe I just don’t grasp the concept.

  44. we should probably keep in mind for the moment that Winfield being cut is a rumor, not a fact. lets wait a minute and see.

hang in bbnate. the Internet is a weird place sometimes.

  45. TruBlu, yeah, I’ll leave the capology to you and John Schneider. I’m just glad to have a GM who is always thinking ahead.

A good FB, John Connor, just released by the bengals. Could be an upgrade over Derrick Coleman. The dude can really block.

  46. Hawkjitsu says:

pdway- it sure is. I apologized to him and tried to let him know I have no issue and I also don’t approve of crazy mattandcindy. hopefully we can chat, debate, and use this blog for it’s true purpose.

  47. As the Field Gulls article yesterday talked about ~ The hawks may not be interested in a one trick pony FB any more.. They want more playmakers on the field and using a TE back there may be their plan moving forward..
(along with a younger, cheaper, better runner. coleman/ware)

  48. piperfeltcher says:

TruBlu- yes you are correct with what you wrote about the cap but what it does allow a team to do is frontload a contract so most of the players cap hit goes against the 1st year where you have extra cap room do to the cap space that is rolled over.

  49. KCthehawk says:

There is no way mayowa or lotulelei make it to the practice squad. Both have shown during preseason that they can play with sacks and tackles for loss.

  50. Hawkjitsu says:

KC – Absolutely. Especially Mayowa. That dude is a wrecking ball.

  51. I wasn’t meaning Mayowa or Lotu will make it to PS, just that the Seahawks would like them there if it works out. But neither is a complete enough player to make this 53.

  52. tealskin says:

Mocarob, You’re probably on to something there. More than likely the Hawks are changing their philosophy. I would keep Mayowa on the 53 and chance Lotulelei on PS. Don’t think he’s ready for primetime.

  53. piperfeltcher says:

I think Lotulelei would get to the practice squad as he is to small to play LB and does need a year in the weight room to add some bulk.

  54. The NFL tracked the cuts to 75 and the cuts to 53. They include AW & MR as Seahawk cuts to 53: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000233304/article/roster-cuts-for-all-32-nfl-teams

  55. piperfeltcher says:

Can not believe my cable provider does not offer Fox Sports1 I so want to watch the Huskies game tonight.

  56. ryanryan says:

the turnover of our roster is nothing short of magnificent. however, changing what they have professed is the ‘identity’ of our offense (power running) when it is clicking on all cylinders is frightening. lynch calls mikerob his ‘eyes’…the zbs is built for vision.

  57. I’m taking a break from the net until cuts are announced. This speculation is just a waste of time, but fun. I’m just still bummed about Mike Rob.

  58. Eagles just cut Danny Watkins, an athletic OG who a lot of us coveted in the draft last year.

  59. raymaines says:

Remember Michael Bamiro, the 6’8″ 344 lb. tackle from Stony Brook that wasn’t part of the regular draft and somehow wasn’t eligible for the supplemental draft either? Philadelphia just cut him. He sounded like a good idea at the time but I guess not.

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/08/31/eagles-release-draft-dodger-michael-bamiro/

  60. piperfeltcher says:

I wonder how much Mike R being sick had to do with his being cut? He has been out 2 weeks with a virus so I am guessing it must be serious.

  61. I’m sorry, Hawkjitsu. I seriously thought you were someone else from the M’s blog. It doesn’t matter. I will certainly drop any animosity. If you detect some from me, talk to me and I will certainly apologize if I think I’m wrong

  62. Hawkjitsu says:

Done and done. I really appreciate it, brother. It will be fun to go back and forth with you. I’ve had my fair share of trollsters just itching to get into it. I automatically could tell that you were not that. Mad dope superfly bomb-sh1t retarded ice cold props. lol.

Got a FF draft in an hour. ANY SUGGESTIONS???

  63. Hawkjitsu – David Wilson, Jimmy Graham, and Fitz (not in that order). Those are four guys I’m targeting tomorrow night after the early guys are gone.

  64. Haven’t played FF in awhile, but I here the tip is to go with a RB that will play a lot early. Wait a few rounds on a QB. That’s because there’s not a huge between the #1 and #19 QB.

  65. Hawkjitsu says:

Sweet. Wilson is going to get his in NY. JG is always money. Fitz will FINALLY have a QB that can at least get him the ball. I’m also thinking Randall Cobb for a flex. Dude is going to get fed the ball. Opinion?

  66. * Should have read between #1 and #10 QB

  67. Hawkjitsu says:

bb- QB is funny in FF. I watched my buddy do his last night, and RW was at no. 64 in ranking. He got him in the 5th round. Ridiculous.

  68. If WTIII wasn’t in a contract year – he’d be my new jersey purchase! Love that guy!

I really thought we’d keep the CBs, including Winfield, and go with some packages with a heck of a lot of CBs on the field (Mr. Happy out of the box thinking).

Winfield is good so it’s tough to see him go. If saving a million bucks was such a big deal, I’m not sure why they’d trade so many picks (those players wouldn’t make much) and $11 million per year to a proven malcontent who cares about one person (himself) when that would make it easier to pay guys like ET and Sherman (not that they still can’t – I expect them to be in Seattle for a long time – it just makes it harder).

  69. banosser says:

Winfield gets cut, expect to see him in red and gold

  70. Hawkjitsu says:

Awwww. Poor Jimmy Clausen got cut. Maybe Buffalo will give him 30 million and a G6.

  71. Hawkjitsu says:

And now the Jets boot Greg McElroy. I wonder if the trick shot QB can catch on somewhere.

  72. BobbyK, I’ve been holding some of that back. I don’t want to make any final pronouncement on Harvin, but I have thought about it. They need to figure it out before they guarantee another 11 mil. We’ll see what happens in 2013. Harvin better stay healthy the next few years and play great to justify it.

  73. Hawkjitsu – I have #3 in a 12 team league. I’m taking Lynch (assurances from the other two that Lynch will be there). Then I traded my #5/8 for a high pick in the 3rd and their last round pick. I’m hoping to go:
    1. Lynch (slam dunk)
    2. Graham (unless someone stupid gets passed on like Julio Jones)
3a. Wilson (much higher on him now that he’s first in line for goal line carries)
    3b. Fitz
    4. Best available RB/WR (we start 3 WRs and also a flex), perhaps Decker
    5. no pick
    6. I have my fingers crossed that one of Wilson, Luck, and Stafford is still available. If I get too nervous about waiting this long for a QB and Matt Ryan is available in the 4th, I may go that route.

  74. raymaines says:

SF released long snapper Brian Jennings, a 12 year vet. (all with SF) and two time pro bowl player and kept a rookie to save $535K in Cap money. There’s blood everywhere.

  75. Hawkjitsu says:

BobbyK – That sounds like a foundation for a dynasty.
I have 1st pick. Peterson I think is good. Then the loooooong wait.

  76. There should be around 704 players cut for every team to make the 53. Blood indeed. 256 can make a PS.

  77. In my fantasy league, should I pick batman over superman? oops. wrong blog. ;-)

  78. *by every team combined

  79. my favorite pick in fantasy this year is the Hawks defense. go earlier on them than you think, they’ve been the first D picked in both of my leagues this year.

  80. banosser says:

“SF released long snapper Brian Jennings, a 12 year vet. (all with SF) and two time pro bowl player and kept a rookie to save $535K in Cap money.”

Really? Huh, what ya know about that….

  81. bbmate – The Harvin trade could eventually turn out great for the Seahawks organization. The Hawks have a great team and it’s hard to be mad when you’re winning most of the time. And he’s the type of talent that can make a very good team into a great team.

My worry is that Harvin was a malcontent in high school when he had no money, a malcontent at Florida when he supposedly didn’t have any money, and then when he started getting paid in the NFL – he’s had trouble with the only two NFL coaches he’s ever had. I worry about giving a player of that character that much money.

Some guys like Russell Wilson – you don’t worry about. They are going to give 100% when they get paid and that’s why you keep them and pay them. Harvin, I worry about.

  82. Hawkjitsu says:

Stevos- Batman. Apparently he beat Superman at one time….the logistics of which I do not understand.

  83. Batman beating Superman is far fetched. At least far away from the Red Sun of Krypton.

Bobby, believe me, it seems I’m one of the biggest Harvin fans on here. We’ll see what he provides at the end of the year and how the Hawks treat him in the off-season.

  84. I’m not trying to talk spit either. I remember hearing that Batman beat Superman a while back.

  85. For last reg season, PFF had AW (Antoine Winfield) ranked 1st among CB performances and RS (Richard Sherman) ranked a close 2nd. The thing is that RS was way better than AW in coverage but AW was way better than RS against the run and at not getting so many penalties.

This preseason, AW only played 27 snaps (8 vs SD and 19 vs DEN, fewest plays of all SEA’s DBs), PManning was the only QB who threw to someone covered by AW (PM targeted Wes Welker) who caught it for an 11 yd TD (6 yds YAC) and PM got a 152.1 NFL QB Rating throwing into AW’s coverage. AW got no tackles or assists in either game he played in and got a penalty in his 8 plays vs SD.

  86. If I was Tebow, and really wanted to show I could play, I would go to the CFL (like Moon) or Arena League (like Warner) and give it one more shot to prove people wrong. Unless I’m mistaken, he took the Bronco’s as far into the playoffs as Peyton did, orthodox or not. A lot of those criticizing him (no one on this blog) have a bias against anyone that doesn’t fit the mold. Like someone being too short, for instance.

  87. Hawkjitsu says:

bb-I’m not trying to talk spit either. I remember hearing that Batman beat Superman a while back.

It’s all gravy baby. Do you by chance know how the hell that happened. I know I’m off the football topic, but I can’t figure it out. HOW DAMNIT!?!?

  88. tylerwyler says:

    Read this book:

    http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dark_Knight_Returns

One of the all-time best comics.

  89. SandpointHawk says:

read the link above your last post Hawkjitsu….

  90. Hawkjitsu says:

Nice. Brains over Brawn. Smartest fighter in the universe. Eat it, krypton boy.

  91. They just cut Jaye Howard. I thought he looked good vs Raiders, and he palyed for Quinn in college…..

  92. freedom_X says:

Front office must be burning the phone lines trying to make trades before cutting people. Winfield has to have some trade value. With the other QB’s chopped, Quinn probably doesn’t unless his preseason play impressed someone.

  93. 22 cuts have to be done by 6 pm eastern today – that’s 3 pm here (about an hour and a half from now). So far all we’ve seen is M.Robinson, A.Winfield, J.Howard cut, and M.Bowie to IR. That leaves 18 more, unless they pick up some guys (if they can) on waivers or vet cuts from other teams…
