In my story today, I talk with Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle Brandon Mebane, who’s now the most-tenured member of the team with Marcus Trufant and Leroy Hill not returning in free agency.

Selected by Seattle in the third round of the 2007 draft, Mebane is not long in the tooth at 28 years old.

“It doesn’t seem like I’ve been here that long,” Mebane said. “But time flies. I don’t really see myself as an old, old veteran. I mean, I’ve been on the team the longest, but I don’t see myself like that yet. I haven’t even hit 30 yet.”

Still, for this young team that believes it can make a deep playoff run, Mebane’s experience helps keeps things in perspective for the Seahawks.

“For the fans it’s very exciting,” Mebane said. “And I think we’re excited, too. But I think the main thing you have to do is still come out here and work, and prove that we are who we are. We can’t really buy into all the media hype – what ESPN is saying and all that stuff. We still have to come out here and work hard.”

Len Pasquarelli of the National Football Post wonders if Seattle’s secondary can be even better in 2013.

ESPN’s Mike Sando takes a look at the performance and snap counts for Seattle’s rookies.

Clare Farnsworth of Seahawks.com catches up with former Seattle returner Bobby Joe Edmonds.

Brady Henderson of 710 ESPN Seattle says that Steven Hauschka’s near miss on a 61-yarder against San Diego is something to file away in your memory bank, and perhaps justification for Pete Carroll going for a 61-yard, game-winning field goal against Atlanta in 2011.

Manish Mehta of The New York Daily News criticizes new Jets general manager John Idzik for his poor decision making this offseason, and believes it will ultimately cost Rex Ryan his job.

  1. Rex Ryan is a clown. Hes lucky to be employed.

  2. sluggo42 says:

So knows more about football players, Mehta or Idzic? Duh… But I do see a trade coming for Brady Quinn, a 3rd no less hehe…

So last year I predicted no more than 4 rooks would make the team… At this point I’m not looking too solid with that.
    Cristin -yup
    Jesse -yup
    Jordan-yup
    Baily- maybe
    Bowie- maybe
    Ware-maybe
    Thimon- nope
    Harper-maybe

    Fa’s
    Stephen Williams-yep
    Winfield-yep
    O’Brian-yep

  3. @sluggo

I’m hoping you can add undrafted rookie Mayowa to that list — although it may be the practice squad.

    Go Vandals! Go Hawks!

  4. sluggo42 says:

And don’t for get Mayawa and Bradford

  5. hawkdawg says:

Do you mean Brian Schofield? If so, I agree.

I bet Tharold Simon will start the season on IR, and I think the Hawks will stash him there for the year.

Very much expect Bailey to make the 53. He’s playing well enough I don’t think he would last if we exposed him on the PS. Not sure about Bowie.

  6. montanamike2 says:

Idzic might save their organization but Rex Ryan needs to go.

  7. SandpointHawk says:

Believe it or not it’s really O’Brien Schofield…

  8. sluggo42 says:

I’m telling ya, Idzic will give us a third for Quinn… Sanchez IS that bad, and Geno needs a year… I’m constantly amazed that Sanchez is even still in the game at all… And Quinn is their best option…
If I were the Yanker, I would guarantee it…

  9. Willson is going to make it.

  10. GeorgiaHawk says:

    As it stands now imo-

    WR-6
Sidney Rice, Doug Baldwin, Jermaine Kearse,Golden Tate, Stephen Williams,Chris Harper.

    OL-9
    LT Russell Okung, Alvin Bailey.
    LG Paul McQuistan, James Carpenter.
    C Max Unger, Lemuel Jeanpierre.
    RG J.R. Sweezy, John Moffitt.
    RT Breno Giacomini.

    TE-3
Zach Miller ,Luke Willson, Sean McGrath.

    QB-2
    Russell Wilson ,Tarvaris Jackson.

    FB-2 Michael Robinson, Spencer Ware.

RB-3 Marshawn Lynch ,Robert Turbin, Christine Michael.

    Total 25 on offense

  11. GeorgiaHawk says:

As it stands now for our Defense imo-

    DL-9
LDE- Red Bryant, Michael Bennett, Jaye Howard.
    LDT- Tony McDaniel, Jesse Williams.
RDT- Brandon Mebane , Jordan Hill.
    RDE- Cliff Avril, Benson Mayowa.

    LB-6
    LOLB- Malcolm Smith, O’Brien Schofield.
    MLB- Bobby Wagner, Allen Bradford.
    ROLB- K.J.Wright, John Lotulelei.

LCB- Richard Sherman, Antoine Winfield, Byron Maxwell.
RCB- Brandon Browner, Walter Thurmond, Jeremy Lane.

    S-4
    SS- Kam Chancellor, Jeron Johnson.
    FS- Earl Thomas, Chris Maragos.

    Total- 25.

  12. GeorgiaHawk says:

Some injured players and suspended players I am not counting at this time.

  13. sluggo42 says:

    I forgot Luke.
I don’t know that ware makes it past the practice squad…

So my rooks that make it are:

    Luuuuke,
    Cristin
    Baily
    Jesse
    Jordan

    Maybe:
    Bradford
    Mayawa

    FA:
    Winfield
    Schofield
    Stephen Williams

    PS guys:
    Harper
    Bowie
    Thimon

    Unexpected cuts:
    Toomer
    Sweeze
    Guy

  14. GeorgiaHawk says:

Practice squad, however I know we may lose a lot of players we cut this year.
If we didn’t lose any then this is the way I see it as of now if all are eligible-

    1.korey Toomer. LB.
    2.Winston Guy. S.
    3.Cooper Helfet.TE.
    4.Derrick Coleman.RB.
    5.Phil Bates.WR.
    6.Ryan Seymore. OL.
    7.Jared Smith. OL.
    8.?

  15. GeorgiaHawk says:

    Sluggo42-

    Unexpected cuts:

    Sweeze?

  16. SandpointHawk says:

    GeorgiaHawk_

    Unexpected cuts:

    Bruce Irvin?

  17. GeorgiaHawk says:

SandpointHawk- If Irvin was available I would put him on the 53 man roster right now so I decided to leave him off for now.

I said this a few posts back-

“Some injured players and suspended players I am not counting at this time.”

  18. tchristensen says:

I like your defense Georgia, but I believe Clemons will be back for the first game and that Mayowa will be on the practice squad. I like the guy but does the name Nick Reed mean anything?

  19. sluggo42 says:

See Georgia, sweeze was unexpected from you eh?

I think either sweeze or moffit old be a casualty from the kids on the oline and carps return…

  20. GeorgiaHawk says:

No way that’s my final roster, but we got to start somewhere.

BTW- There are many questions right now with regards to injuries. -Clemons, Simon, Carpenter ect… so hopefully we can stash a few young upcoming players on IR so no other team can claim them.

  21. SeventiesHawksFan says:

Sweezy will for sure make this team. Even if Moffit is eventually named the starter. His athletic talent surpasses Moffit’s and he is still only in his second year. And he has started two playoff games. No unproven rookie has greater value than that.

The big question marks for me around who the last three or four players who will make the team on either side of the ball are:

Offense: Ware, Harper, Bowie, Seymour, Bailey, Coleman

I think Stephan Williams and Kearse both make the team.

Defense: Mayowa, Schofield, Lotulelei, Toomer, Guy, Simon (IR)

I think Schofield and Mayowa have a good chance of making the team. And Simon is IR’d for the season.

  22. raymaines says:

Can we all please agree that there isn’t a coach or GM in the entire league who is actually an idiot? Starting from that point, I’m thinking that if the Seahawks couldn’t get squat for Matt Flynn there isn’t much chance of getting a third round pick for Brady Quinn. I know, all it takes is one, and there is always the Chicago/Rick Meyer trade and Charlie Whitehurst to point to, but you can’t count on having an exception to a rule. BQ gets cut on the countdown from 60 to 53 and may or may not get picked up by another team, but there won’t be a trade. Seriously guys, I’m not as dumb as I look. There won’t be a trade.

  23. Depends on injuries in the next 2 games. But for now, those guesses are as good as any.

  24. I think there will be very few guys who get picked up. Teams tend to like their own guys. Not saying it’s what’s right but that is what happened.

As near as I could find only 4 guys switched teams last year after final cut downs – 4 in the entire NFL. they year before there was 3 I could find.

Every year we all worry about the guys we are going to lose and then we don’t – big difference now is we are deeper than most other teams. But that was true the last 2 years as well – (now we have the top end talent to go with it) I do feel that we will lose any of our CB’s that we cut but I don’t know that a lot of other guys that will get picked up. I would think it would be less but Jax will I feel almost assuredly pick up one of our guys.

  25. bbnate420 says:

Somebody could conceivably trade for Quinn. Somebody traded for TJack. I can’t imagine getting better than a 7th or conditional pick though. A 3rd is crazy. I believe the person that suggested that was being sarcastic.

  26. Georgia – not a bad list to start with – I am not sure that Harper/Ware have done enough to get on the squad yet.

At this point in time I see Harper heading for the PS. Honestly I don’t see them keeping 6 WR – anticipating the return of Harvin – of course this is pure speculation.

  27. SandpointHawk says:

Yes, I see the later post now. Thanks for the clarification…

  28. GeorgiaHawk says:

xcman- I agree with you about Harper/Ware not being a sure thing.

The reason I kept them for now is because-

1- Even though they haven’t stood out like others they haven’t played terrible either.

2- I think they have an advantage being rookies in a close race with another player for a spot because they are still learning the play book and system and that probably would impress the FO more then a player that has been around long enough to know the play book and system. more upside in other words.

3- They are two very physical players and Carroll just loves physical players.

  29. GeorgiaHawk–You forgot Mike Morgan. He’s still at the top of the depth chart at LEO right now. He is not a lock, but Im betting he makes it. I also think Seattle keeps 10 Offensive Lineman, and Bailey makes the team. (So does Sweezy).

    I think Guy is gone.

Tharold Simon will not make the 53. Either they cut him, or figure out a way to put him direct on IR, or they waive/injure him.

Maxwell’s ankle sprain is bad news for him–opens the door for Lane and the others, but I still think he makes the team. Not sure about Johnson or Maragos.

Harper is the big question mark. Perhaps they try to hide him, not play him much in preseason, then try to sneak him to practice squad. Thats a gamble. But he’s been outplayed so far by Williams and Kearse, and I just cant see Kearse getting the axe at this point.

They may indeed keep Ware as well as Robinson. Thats a lot of backs though.

    Just my two cents.
