First reported by ESPN’s John Clayton, the Seattle Seahawks announced that defensive end Greg Scruggs underwent arthroscopic ACL reconstruction of his right knee at Seattle Surgery Center today.

The surgery was performed by team doctor Ed Khalfayan, and puts Scruggs’ availability for the 2013 season in jeopardy.

A seventh-round selection in the 2012 draft out of Louisville, Scruggs was a surprise performer in his rookie season, finishing with two sacks in 11 regular-season and two playoff games.

Scruggs was inactive for five games due to hamstring, wrist and oblique injuries.

If Scruggs is done for the year, the Seahawks have eight healthy defensive tackles currently on the 90-man roster – Brandon Mebane, Michael Bennett, Tony McDaniel, Clinton McDonald, Jaye Howard, Jordan Hill, Jesse Williams and Myles Wade.

How / When did this happen? Regardless, I’m awfully sorry to hear this, I really liked what little I saw from him last season and was hoping he’d be an unsung contributor at 3-tech this season.

  2. GeorgiaHawk says:

Dam! I was looking forward to seeing his further development in year two.

  3. GeorgiaHawk says:

I know it’s kind of off topic but I think Snyder is a jerk regarding this.

  4. IwillPay says:

Why did they wait so long to do the surgery…?

  5. IwillPay says:

Way to Tear it up Scruggs!

  6. Ewalters7354 says:

    Ouch! Sorry to hear that.

  7. Sekolah says:

Brutal. This happen during OTA’s or what? It had to have. Why else wait so long to get the issue fixed.

  8. Dukeshire says:

My guess is that it happened during a recent workout, but we’ll have to wait for Eric to confirm the details.

  9. boucherm says:

Disappointing, but at least it happens at a crowded position, and likely leaves open not only a roster spot but a number of snaps for the 2 rookie DTs or Jaye Howard.

  10. Oldslow says:

There can be a glass half full viewing of the injury, because it may allow another young player to be given an opportunity while still giving Scruggs another year to develop as he rehabs. Certainly better than having it happen to a core starter.

  11. I wanted to see him play this Ur. Bummer

  12. Stevos says:

It would have been hard for him to make this team regardless. Tough break for him.

  13. Might actually help him. Hangs around for another year maybe on IR but then someone walks at the end of contract – BOOM open spot

  14. Newborough says:

Seahawks home page is reporting the injury occurred just 3 weeks ago, just before the Draft. Tough break for him.

  15. Sorry to hear that. Maybe it’s true that he can be stashed on the pup or IR and we keep someone that we would have had to cut & possibly lose to another team. That’s the only positive at this point. Hope that no one else gets injured at DT. Depth can get burnt through in a hurry.

Just watched the Hill highlights from the other thread and he shows promise. Excited there for his potential as Wisconsin is no slouch on the O line.

  16. Interesting timing – I wouldn’t be surprised to see him with Clemons on the PUP list.

  17. grizindabox24 says:

blocis, with the ACL, it is more likely DL than PUP

  18. grizindabox24 says:

    I mean IR

  19. DanielleMND says:

GeorgiaHawk, well, it is Dan Snyder we’re talking about. He pretty much defines jerk.

  20. DanielleMND says:

Michael Bennett is pretty similar to Scruggs, I think, so it’s a tough break for Scruggs, but I think the team will be fine.
