Seattle kicked off a busy fifth round by moving up to select Alabama defensive tackle Jesse Williams. Detroit had pick 137, but Seattle traded pick 165 in the fifth round and pick 199 in the sixth round, both picks they received in a trade with Baltimore on Friday, to move and take Williams.

Nicknamed “Tha Monstar” Williams is a native of Brisbane, Australia. He is the perfect example of the deep talent pool at defensive line in this year’s draft.

At 6-3 ½ and 323 pounds, Williams is a powerhouse inside, demonstrated by his 600-pound bench press.

But he also is surprisingly nimble and agile pursuing ball carriers because of his rugby and basketball background in his native Australia. Williams ran an impressive

Williams ran 4.90-second, 40-yard time at his pro day last month. Check out a feature I wrote on Williams here.

With the No. 138 pick in the fifth round, Seattle selected LSU cornerback Tharold Simon. At 6-2 and 202 pounds, Simon fits Seattle’s size requirements for a press corner.

Simon also comes with his share of baggage. Simon was arrested on Thursday night and charged with public intimidation, resisting arrest and unnecessary noise in his hometown of Eunice, La.

Lafayette, La., television station KATC reported that Simon’s vehicle was blocking a street and he was asked to move it. According to the report, he told the officer, “I own Eunice” and “I’m going to buy these projects and you are going to be mine,” before getting into his car.

I can’t believe they got Jesse Williams in the 5th round. Kid is a beast. Does Tony Mc Daniel even make this team now?

  2. Interesting pick in Simon. Hope he can get it together for a productive pro career. I doubt he will own Seattle.

  3. Carlsonkid says:

Love the Williams pick ! Absolute steal in the 5th , very nice addition to the team …

And another big press corner .. he’ll need to calm down a little on buying any towns , 5th rounders don’t make THAT much : )

    Sherman 2.0

  4. I also love the Williams pick. He looks very promising

  5. Does McClatchy own the Sacramento Bee…………bad cartoon about the blast in Taxas……….14 deaths and 200 seriously injured…..rotten cruel journalism as a cartoon…………..shame

  6. Macabrevity says:

Tha Monstar has me jacked. I am absolutely loving the pair of DT’s we nabbed in this draft.

  7. Between Simon & Michael………….At least Sea fans no longer have to worry about character over talent, but don’t they say 180 degrees from dysfunctional is still dysfunctional?

  8. Carlsonkid says:

Simon has great size , but Sherm is gonna have to teach him how to jam at the line of scrimmage . He releases too early . A bit of a project , as most 5th round picks are , but the kid has all the tools and desire to be a great corner . Nice pick Seahawks !

  9. I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to have added quality depth and potential future starters at both defensive tackle positions.

Hill reminds me of Mebane in terms of how he gets off the ball and Williams reminds me of Mebane in terms of being stout at the point of attack. I don’t see either as being as good as Mebane – but I see both as being good football players who are part of the solution, rather than part of the problem. Love it.

  10. 600 lb bench press? Jee-sus . . .

  11. sluggo42 says:

    Still no lb’s…?

  12. Sarcasticus says:

Jesse is great. He has tremendous strength above the waist, but he still needs to fill out the lower half. When he does that, he will be incredible. AS it is, he can take on double-teams and hold at the point of attack but don’t expect much push. If he gets singled, he can push the pocket. He will run down ball carriers anywhere on the field. His motor is non-stop. He is a great interviewee (it’s the Australian accent) and I am sure he will get some new head tattoos by training camp. I love it when my favorite pro team picks from my college team. Roll Hawks!

  13. Still want to know how Willliams lasted until the 5th round – but I don’t care – excited to see how he progresses!
