The Seahawks announced today that they’ve signed quarterback Jerrod Johnson.

The Texas A&M product initially signed as undrafted rookie free agent with Philadelphia in July 2011, but was released during training camp. Johnson then signed a futures contract with Pittsburgh in January 2012, but was released in August.

Johnson started 29 of 37 career games at Texas A&M, and finished his career holding 24 school records, including total offense (8,888 yards), passing yards (8,011), completions (650) and touchdown passes (67).

At 6-5 and 250 pounds, Johnson is a big quarterback with a strong arm who can move. He played under Mike Sherman at Texas A&M, now the offensive coordinator for Miami, so Johnson should be familiar with the West Coast offense.

And with Seattle scheduled to host a rookie minicamp May 10-12, Johnson gives the Seahawks an legitimate camp arm to run the team’s offense during the three-day camp.

Seattle now has four quarterbacks on the 90-man roster, with Russell Wilson, Brady Quinn, Josh Portis and Johnson.

Could it be they’re bringing him in to be a TE project? One of the old scouting reports I kept around, said Johnson’s arm strength was sapped due to shoulder surgery in 2010. He is said to have very strong intangibles (character, hard worker, etc.)

Perhaps he’s regained some arm strength now? If not, the position change might make more sense, given that a couple of other teams have already given up on him (not even making a practice squad.)

I’ve spent the last few minutes reading a little about Jerrod Johnson and I think I really like this signing. He seems like a real good kid with a fully repaired shoulder that only needs a chance to show the NFL he can play. Where would he have a better chance to compete than right here? I wish him the best.

  4. He rarely stays in the pocket and has a really long throwing motion.

The only comment I can make towards what the Seahawks choose to do any more is…….”GO HAWKS”

If they draft a QB, then 5 QBs for the rookie minicamp? Somehow I think this could be a smoke screen for a pick they would like to make, but need cover…

It’s a camp arm. Nothing to get excited about here.
