Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman’s appearance on ESPN’s First Take lived up to the build up this afternoon.

Sherman went toe to toe with ESPN’s Skip Bayless, as he challenged the Seattle cornerback’s opinion that he’s one of the best cornerbacks in the game.

“I’ll tell you a couple facts,” Sherman said. “I have 12 picks in 26 games. Four forced fumbles in 26 games. Two sacks in 26 games. Those are facts. I’m first-team All-Pro. That’s a fact. You have yet to explain to me a fact why you have made the statements you’ve made. That’s why I said you’re opinion is discredited. That’s why nobody listens to you.”

  1. Ah, there’s the whole thing. Thanks Eric!

  2. This is getting tiresome. Richard, I heard what you said but you let this guy get under your skin so you are attacking him…which is what he wants – publicity for him, which he needs to set himself apart from all the other talking heads.

Don’t get mad, Bro… Keep it at the professional level and let your actions speak for you. You need to learn how to take the high road sometimes…you’ll figure it out. I believe you are the best and so do a lot of Seahawk fans.

    Go Hawks, Go Sherm!

  3. wow . . .I think i missed the first part of all of this – what did bayless say that made Sherman this angry at him?

  4. mindnbrad says:

Agreed, Tom. Love Sherm. Sherm, take high road.

  5. bbnate420 says:

Do I smell a budding bromance?

I’m better in my 24 years of life than you are at life. LOL!

  6. banosser says:

Stick it up Bayless’ rear… Way to go Sherm! Bayless has zero cred.. he’s a complete, total tool..

  7. Ewalters7354 says:

Skip Bayless hates the hawks. So for a hawk player to embarrass him is cool with me.

  8. bird_spit says:

I can tell you, if Sherman were on any other team, I’d hate him regardless of his play, cause I hate the guys mouth running all of the time. That said, Sherms a hawk, and he can say anything he wants to say, as long as he continues bring the numbers. The kids special, no doubt.

Sherm gets to do what a lot of us want to do with Skip Bayless..

  9. tealskin says:

Problem is, when you argue with a fool, you’re both fools. Sherman needs to step back and give a little more thought to what he’s doing.

  10. Dukeshire says:

“I’m better than you at life.” LOL. That was an awesome clip, but yeah, arguing with a moron like Bayless is a losing proposition.

  11. DanielleMND says:

Nice to see someone take Bayless down.

  12. FleaFlicker says:

Agree with Duke. Don’t want to see Richard’s energy and motivation channeled into confrontations with people like Skip Bayless.

Keep showing up the haters with picks, forced fumbles, and sacks. Everything else will take care of itself.

  13. sluggo42 says:

Arguing with a fool is a losing proposition. They drag you down to their level and then beat you with their experience…

But, Bayless is a clown and Sherman is letting him have it hard…

    Pretty funny stuff

  14. chrisj122 says:

    That was AWESOME!
Although I don’t like watching Sherman getting distracted from being an All-Pro corner but I really enjoyed watching that clip.

I hope Sherman continues to be great because he put a very large bullseye on his back.

  15. Ewalters7354 says:

Bayless got just what he deserved.I personally could care less if Sherm talks or not. He’s a man on the field.PC/JS don’t have a problem with it and neither do I ;-)

  16. Ewalters7354 says:

I actually think Sherm likes the target on his back.He tempted Brady and once Brady tried to pick on him what happened? The guy is so good right now that he wants to be targeted. If he does get targeted like he wants, he’ll lead the league in picks.

  17. RDPoulsbo says:

Sherman punking Bayless to his face on his show for all to see just made him a legend in Seattle. Fans of other teams can seethe all they want, it’s their problem.

As for the whole deal with arguing with a fool makes you a fool, well that’s true. It’s also true these media availabilities help to promote the NFL and Seahawks brand. It’s what it is and players need to do it as part of their job. Just because he has to argue with a fool doesn’t mean he has to play along. Whatever, it’s the offseason anyway, so here’s no energy being wasted right now.

  18. As much as I am glad to see someone…especially a Seahawk…virtually slap Bayliss silly, I’m kind of disappointed in a way too. Bayliss ended up doing to Sherman, what he does on the field all the time…get under his foe’s skin with his words. That said, one big difference is that Sherm respects his opponents after the game.

The entire thing between them was rooted in Bayliss saying that Sherman isn’t even in the same class as Revis…not even close. Frankly, Skip Bayliss is simply a lazy man that prefers to belittle anyone he is speaking at (not with) to get attention and thus ratings. He’s the worse when it comes to actually doing his homework to be prepared. And he admitted as much when he said he’d watched Sherman “8 or 10 times”.

  19. Sherman nailed Bayless! Perfect!

  20. trout_hound says:

I have to say, I’m getting tired of Sherman’s schtick as well. Bayless is a wanker, but Sherman needs to let other people promote his accomplishments. Pride comes before the fall…

  21. montanamike2 says:

It’s how he stays motivated, showing swagger calling out Bayless was bold and not backing down. He started it and got bitch slapped for doing so, i bet he doesn’t write about him anymore but don’t expect his vote to the HOF anytime soon either. That was awsome!

  22. If Kenny Easley would have talked as much as Sherman does now, he’d possibly be in the Hall of Fame. Sherman is a smart dude, his play does his talking (that’s why he’s All Pro) but nobody would care since he’s a Seahawk if he didn’t remind them there’s a team in Canada. Someone as dumb as Bayless would barely even know his name if it would be for some of Sherman’s antics.

  23. Bayless reminds me a little bit of pabuwal. He makes a statement backed up by nothing but his own opinion and presents it as fact. Then you spend the energy to disprove it and call him on it and get a reply of crickets in the background. Meanwhile he’s probably back there somewhere laughing that another one took the bait. lol. ;)

When it comes to the tele, it’s all about exposure and ratings. Both Bayless and Sherman gained in that regard from this exchange.

  24. I thought for most of the interview Sherman looked bad, The last 40 seconds or so was good the rest he just looks immature again

  25. tindrummer33 says:

Sometimes less is more. We know that Sherman is smart, skilled and accomplished. A few more All-Pros and everyone else will too. But I’ll take the funny, clever Richard of the RealRob Report over the not-so-funny, fulminating fellow on First Take. If a Trent Williams slap to the head turns into some other hater’s shoulder to the knee, how does that help the Hawks? “Better at life”? You don’t argue that, you show it.

  26. tindrummer33 says:

To clarify: By “fellow” I meant Richard, not Skip.

  27. Jamie Dukes on NFL network was telling Sherman to just shut-up this am. This will be the story if Sherman is not carefull, he is to damn good to be know in media as only a trash talker. I think anyone that has heard bayless knows he is a douchbag but the way Sherman handled himself did his reputation no good. I think it might be time for one of his teammates to reel him in, let his off field activities with kids be the story this offseason not BS like this argument with bayless on first take.

  28. Dukeshire says:

Jamie Dukes is another one of those reactionary guys who put zero thought into whatever it is they’re saying. He’s a classic “the louder I say it the more right I am” type of person. What’s interesting to me, although not surprising on any level, is that everyone including his peers, knows Bayless is a hack. Yet no one will call him out and acknowledge that his opinion on Sherman’s play is wildly off-base and ill-informed. Nope, the narrative is simply that Sherman is an arrogant loudmouth.

  29. CDHawkFan says:

If you take this behavior (trash talking, cocky, not backing down, in your face, sticking up for himself) away from Sherman, do you risk the chance of having another Kelly Jennings? This attitude makes him tick, it helps makes him a Pro-Bowler, take it away he becomes just a normal guy who might not want to play football.

Everyone gets pissed about busts, about guys that have talent but piss it away, your V. Youngs, J. Russell, A. Curry, those guys didn’ t have something (mostly motivation) and look were it got them and their teams. Do you really want to have Sherman lose his edge, what makes him tick, what gets him up and motivated? Its who he is (as well as All-Pro) so I am willing to accept it.

I love this team, I live in the now, I don’t give a F what he says, just win. Like others have pointed out, its not like he killed someone or is eating babies. Would I hate him if he was on another team??? Who cares, not a question I will waste time with because he’s not.

I wonder how many people on this blog would like to be told not to say/do something that was legal and not against their company rules. He is entitled to his opinion and has the right to say what he said but his fans want him to be someone else. I don’t get it, why do you worry about such meaningless crap? I feel like Allen Iverson ‘ you are talking about …talking?’ Lets focus on football and let Richard be Richard which is a 5th round Pro-Bowler that we will have cheaply for at least a few more years.

It would be like saying Pete needs to get rid of the RA-RA cheerleader behavior and just concentrate on being an X and O coach. That RA-RA gets the guys going, gets them to sign with the Hawks, without that edge he would just be another assistant coach.

  30. Palerydr says:

CDHawkfan I think you hit Shermans real motivator, he’s a 5th round pick. Brady uses the fact he was a 6th round choice as a motivator to this day. I just saw a piece on him where he talks about that very thing. I feel for the short term at least, being a 5th round draft choice is what motivates Sherman. As for Bayliss I’m glad Sherman called him out and I hope somebody else does as well. He’s a hack and don’t forget his running down the Hawks before the Super Bowl. Look up douchebag talking head in the urban dictionary and I’m sure you’ll see his ignorant mug.

  31. chrisj122 says:

What kinda ticked me off was when Bayless is trying to marginalize Sherman’s play.
Bayless goes on to basically say that Sherman is lucky to be part of a really good defense, that the front 7 or the really good players and Sherman is just along for the ride.

If you know anything about the Seahawks this last season you know that statement is flat out wrong. Sherman did what he was able to do without the defense ever really getting any pressure on the QB.

Imagine how good Sherman could be if the Hawks could generate consistent pressure on the QB.

Bayless is a joke and Sherman exposed him for what he is!

  32. Ewalters7354 says:

Good stuff CD. Couldn’t agree more.

  33. If you take this behavior (trash talking, cocky, not backing down, in your face, sticking up for himself) away from Sherman, do you risk the chance of having another Kelly Jennings?

The Answer is flat out NO – you don’t – and all of that behavior is GREAT on the field, but when he gets away from the field it would be nice to see him tone it down. The first large chunk of the altercation made Sherman look stupid, attacking Bayless as a person and not the facts – THEN he goes into facts and makes really great points

I would actually say the day was a draw and not a clear Sherman win.

  34. roadwork says:

Spot on Richard. Keep the pressure on these Northeast media morons

  35. WallaWalla says:

“Arguing with a fool makes you a fool” – Mmmmm… That could be said about pretty much everyone on here!

  36. bbnate420 says:

Can’t argue that, WallaWalla. Well done. :-)

  37. That was Ugly. No winners came out of that. They both appear to be fools based on that exchange. And I’m a big Sherman fan!

  38. bigmike04 says:

I actual like that Sherman rip Bayless a new one as Bayless does that to everyone that comes on the show by talking down to them & force feeding his opinion by shoving it down their throats.. The guy got what, he deserve as he does that to his co host & to other sport players..

Thought no offensive Eric but I do think TNT should get rid of John McGrath as, he is alot like Skip Bayless & frankly if he doesn’t cover sports by reporting what happen & just give his opinion than, he shouldn’t even be in sport paper.. The guy story to me is just waste of newspaper space, so to TNT get a better report and let McGrath go.. Seems harsh but just my opinion that sport page could be better without a guy with his opinon as much rather, people who comment on here are more read able than he is..

  39. rramstad says:

On the one hand watching that I definitely thought it was a waste of Sherman’s time and energy. On the other hand, there are a half dozen or so national guys who cover the NFL who are TERRIBLE and I think everyone in the business knows it… lazy guys who just regurgitate the same thing they said last year, or who perpetuate a narrative that someone else came up with. Bayless is definitely one of those guys, same with Jamie Dukes. I see no problem with calling them out.
