You bring in a scrambling Seneca/Portis/Tavaris type of player if RW goes out and you have what? A big drop off. This isn’t a Kap coming in for Alex Smith type of situation. Flynn fits nicely behind RW because he’s good and the O coordinator will figure out which of the plays in the play book Flynn can pull off. Same story with Barkley.

What I was trying to say, is at the end of this last season I remember Pete saying that he would like to find a QB with the same style of play as Wilson for a backup

What Galena said basically, they still had tons of standard runs and pocket plays installed. like any good coaching staff they only leaned on the read option heavily when the opposition couldnt stop it.

Don’t forget Barkley was Pete’s guy for a long time. rumor is PC was watching Barkley from the 8th grade on. really shouldn’t have been a shock when he went with RW as starter last year, he did the same thing with MB when at USC. whats a bigger leap of faith? starting a 4 year major conference Qb who played at a high level as a NFL rookie or starting a High school kid at a top 20 major conference BCS contender.

Regardless of who is playing behind center it is the coaches job to maximize the talent that he has on the field. Obviously a pocket passer is not going to have read-option plays called for him but that is a small fraction of our offense. What would have to change is the level of pass protection. Wilson and Lynch both make the O-Line appear better, simply by their respective abilities. I highly doubt that our coaching staff wants RW to have to scramble out of the pocket to extend plays. Ideally he, or whoever is qb, can sit back there and pick their nose while waiting for a receiver to come open.

Wilson, first and foremost is an accurate passer inside our outside the pocket. If he wasn’t, the fact that he has great ability to extend plays with his legs wouldn’t mean diddly squat.

Nah, he’ll go to high, and wouldn’t be the value the Hawks need from a high pick. Schneider and Carroll aren’t the type to waste a pick like that. I am dying to see what they come up with this year. They had it all working well last year!
Wonder how the draft pundits will respond, with the egg on their faces from last years comments? Most of them won’t even acknowledge their gaffes. But I bet they are more careful with their criticisms.

If Barkley is a pocket passer, that does not fit the profile that Pete wants. IE someone with Wilson’s abilities so the play book can stay the same.

It may be a very wise move sniffing and selecting Barkley. One less QB available to QB hungry teams. Flynn’s value goes up considerably if we take a QB off the board. Also, he’s a really good QB and that never hurts to have on your team!

There’s no way the Hawks would even sniff at Barkley with Wilson and Flynn on the roster already .
