Veterans Trufant, Hill uncertain of futures

While most Seahawks tried to console themselves about the end of one season by looking ahead to the next, that future seemed less certain for a pair of veterans not under contract for next season: cornerback Marcus Trufant and linebacker Leroy Hill.

I would like to play, of course. I’m a competitor, so I always want to be out on the field. I’ve been doing it for a long time. I love the sport. I love the game. I’m going to just see how it goes, and I’m going to take it as it comes. (The Seahawks) would definitely be my first choice. Here is home. It will always be home. So to be able to play in my hometown — I’ve been blessed for 10 years to do that – so I’m going to take it as it comes.

On how he feels physically: I feel good. Of course, it’s a long season, so it can wear on you a little bit. But I feel good. I was able to move around with all the young guys. So I feel good. I had a lot of fun doing it.

I’ll take it in stride, you know what I’m saying? I’m gonna go relax for a little while. Go take care of my son. Just relax. What’s going to happen is going to happen. We’ll see.

It’s not just Trufant and Hill–carrying a DB who’s seldom off the injured reserve list for a couple of seasons will force the Hawks to make some tough off-season decisions. My guess is that Seattle will draft a DB this year. Also, I hope that they draft a WR, a run-stuffing DT, and (sigh) an offensive lineman. We’ve simply seen too many injuries on the O-line not to add some depth. And yeah, they’ll probably outfox me by drafting a LB I’ve never heard of…

  2. Dukeshire says:

They need depth at corner, for sure.

  3. Under the “Overlooked” category when people are talking about the draft, Clem may be out for the better part of NEXT year as well. We’ve seen the Bruce isn’t an every down End. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a DE early.

  4. I’m guessing JS will sign a DE and give themselves flexibility to draft BPA, and not have to reach for need. But I would love an every down DE, and pass rushing DT, WR help for sure.

  5. doubledink says:

Irvin could use about 20 – 25 additional lbs. Jones, Carp and Clem were missed up front but we were surprisingly healthy, relatively. I think that is what stings, knowing how hard it is to enter the postseason with all your guys. That might not happen next year.

I think we win at Atlanta if we could have gotten pressure…That is a priority in my opinion, also need a playmaker/goto guy at WR, along with what we have, I love the guys we have, Tater,Rice and 89 (brainfart), and of course Miller, but we need a true #1 guys at WR. We need another stud at LB for more depth, But number one is DT run stuffer/push the pile into the QB guy. I’m looking forward to the master Schnieder getting to work…..Love this team..GO Hawks

I think a TE might be in the picture as well. If Desmond Trufant would fall to third round , JS/PC will go after him. I still say we need to talk to Osi; (he does seem like has gotten of his personal “spaceship’ down to Earth a bit)
Maybe he can help us for a couple of years…..
Then we can draft a DT & WR ( or, WR & DR )

  8. SaigonSun says:

    Sorry. ( WR & DT)

If Ervin puts on a few pounds and Carpenter drops a few, both lines will be better than they were this year. Thurmond coming into the year healthy should help him stay healthy and will help the secondary as will a veteran Lane. There is decent depth at LB too.

I’m worried about DT and WR though. I think the current group is about as good as they are going to get, and it’s not really good enough.

Ten picks in the April draft. Not all of them are going to make the team no matter how well the brain trust picks.

  10. On Trufant….. I was really happy to see the progress made by Lane and Maxwell and would expect (and prefer) for one of them to step into the 3rd corner role. Having said that, I have no issue with re-signing Trufant to another 1 year contract for depth. His experience would continue to be an asset and we wouldn’t need to rely on him to play and stay healthy every week.

On Leroy Hill….. in comparison to the Trufant situation, I am a little less certain about the depth behind Hill. Still, I think going with youth here may be an upgrade – if would be great if Malcom Smith, a FA or a draft pick could step in for Hill. Again, I have no problem with signing Hill to a 1 year contract and having him compete for playing time. He would be a fine 4th LB.

  11. thursday says:

89 is doug baldwin. i agree with you on the WR need though. they’re good, but not quite on that championship level. idk who we can get, but somebody in the Fitz/Torrey Smith mold would be great.

  12. I agree with most that we again need to address the d-line (DT and DE) pass rush situation, either by free agency or draft (or both).

I think our DB, RB, QB (assuming we keep Flynn) situations are good.

  13. Our WR situation is not awful, Rice, Tate and Baldwin are all fine. It would be nice to add another quality, tall receiver to the mix to push the group.

  14. thursday says:

not awful at all (did anyone actually say that?) but a big playmaker to line up opposite rice (and tate to the slot) would complete what we have, imo

  15. I think we are in agreement……

  16. DanielleMND says:

Trufant is too much of a liability in coverage, and that’s the one area of the defense that really cost us in 2012-13.

  17. raymaines says:

I feel kind of sorry for Leroy Hill. A pretty good player and a decent sort of guy that seemed to do something really dumb every time his contract was due. He could probably have earned twice as much money over the course of his career if not for his really rather slight miscues at the worst possible time.
