The Seattle Seahawks had a tryout with a handful of kickers at the team’s Renton headquarters today, and veteran Ryan Longwell apparently came out as the winner.
According to ESPN’s Ed Werder, Seattle plans to sign Longwell to the team’s active roster as insurance with Seattle’s starter Steven Hauschka nursing a lower calf strain.
UPDATE: I have confirmed this report.
The 15-year veteran did not play for any NFL team during the regular season. He was released by Minnesota a couple weeks after the Vikings drafted Blair Walsh in April.
Longwell, 38, has a career 82.3 field goal percentage rate, but that number dipped to 76.8 percent (22 of 28) in 2011.
Seahawks general manager John Schneider is familiar with Longwell from his time in Green Bay. Longwell played for the Packers from 1997 to 2005 before signing with the Vikings as a free agent in 2006.
Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said the plan is to closely monitor Hauschka and get him ready to play, but Longwell provides a backup plan if Seattle’s regular kicker can’t go.
The Seahawks can create an extra roster spot with defensive end Chris Clemons likely headed to the injured reserve list after suffering an ACL tear and torn meniscus in his left knee.
Good move. Put them both on the active roster so you have a little insurance during the game if needed.

Another good call by the front office. JS is definitely exec of the year. Let’s hope we don’t need this extra insurance but it is nice to have. when H started gimping last week it was scary…we need our kicker and H is a good one.

Longwell grew up in Puyallup. He was an old pal of Hasselbeck’s from the GB days. Hass used to hold for him. The story is that when Hasselbeck went out for the overtime coin flip in the fateful ’03 playoff, Longwell was out there for the Packers. Hass and Longwell were kidding each other, with Matt ragging him about being sure not to miss any crucial field-goal tries, and he was still in that mode when he uttered the famed: “We want the ball and we’re gonna score.”

Cool story about Matt. One of the reasons I liked him so much is because he wasn’t some stuffy puppet that always toed the corporate line all the time. I liked his jokes and how he was goofy sometimes.

Odd signing. The guy is fairly old at 34. Probably has a lot of tread left on the tires, though, as he only played 5 NFL seasons, more or less, and a couple of seasons in the UFL.

That 3rd down catch by Miller was, in my opinion, the biggest single play of the game. Tough catch, determined to get the yards…it allowed the coming momentum change to happen.

watching another chunk of the game a 2nd time through, other observations – -
all those people saying Sherman was mouthy or whatnot in the game, must have turned a blind eye to DeAngelo, b/c he started something on almost every single pass play, and certainly every time he was in on a tackle. And I don’t know for sure, but it seems like every time there was chippy play by the Redskins D, the next play was a run from Marshawn. It’s like, you want to see who’s tougher? Here’s our sledgehammer. Go ahead and tackle him.
RW is seriously fast, when he runs w/the ball it’s always very much under control, aware of what is around him. but when he sprinted past Lynch a couple time to get in a blocking position, damn, he really moved. seems like in a different life, he could’ve been a very nice CB.
final thing, watching it again, the McCoy dropped pass at about the 10 yrd line, was just as big (and arguably bigger) error as Lynch’s fumble at the 1 yd line. McCoy may have gotten in for the TD and would have certainly gotten inside the 5, and he dropped an easy pass, while Lynch took a helmet to the ball.
