Good morning. We’ll have our regular Monday Morning QB chat at 11 a.m. today, so stop by in between last-minute shopping if you have time.
Also, Seattle head coach Pete Carroll will have his regular Monday afternoon press conference at 3 p.m. today, and we’ll have a report from the VMAC.
A quick check of the playoff picture shows the Seahawks have clinched a postseason berth, and are holding down the No. 5 spot in the NFC wild card picture, and would play No. 4 Washington (9-6) if the playoff started today.
However, Washington hosts Dallas (8-7) on Sunday night, with the winner taking home the NFC East crown. So what do you think is the best matchup on the road for the Seahawks, the Redskins ore the Cowboys?
Here’s my game story. Defensive end Red Bryant had this to say about his team’s dominant performances over the last three games. “We’re doing what we do,” he said. “We’re going to play tough. We’re going to play physical. We’re going to execute, and whatever the score is, that’s the score.”
Dave Boling of The News Tribune writes that the Seahawks have earned the title of the best team in the NFL after another impressive performance. Boling: “The Seattle Seahawks are now the best team in the National Football League. You can argue the point with them if you want, but it might cost you some teeth.Because that’s how the Seahawks reached this stage, by playing defense like a pack of wolves, and approaching every play with an intensity generally reserved for a fist fight.”
John McGrath of The News Tribune says that one team showed up at CenturyLink Field, and the other team … not so much. McGrath: “It wouldn’t be accurate to say Sunday night meant nothing to the Niners. It just would be more accurate to say Sunday night meant everything to the Seahawks.”
Cornerback Richard Sherman played well with just a day of practice this week, returning a blocked field goal 90 yards and hauling in a team-leading seventh interception. Sherman said a looming, four-game suspension has not taken away his ability to focus. “It’s not that weird,” Sherman said. “I’m from the inner city. I’m from a bad place, and adversity is something you always have in your life. And you just have to meet that adversity head on. I’ve done it my whole life, and this is just another opportunity.”
Ryan Divish of The News Tribune talks with Doug Baldwin after the game. The Stanford product finished with a team-high four receptions for 53 yards, including two scores, and admitted to relishing his first win over former Stanford head coach Jim Harbaugh.
Don Ruiz of The News Tribune takes in the San Francisco locker room, where players looked to quickly put this one in the rear view mirror. “Every time you’re on the field you’re learning something,” said quarterback Colin Kaepernick, a second-year player out of Nevada. “We just have to take what we can from this game into next week. … I think the whole team knows that if you get down you have to keep scoring points. We didn’t do that tonight.”
Check out a photo gallery from the game here.
Clare Farnsworth of Seahawks.com writes that Russell Wilson is his player of the game. With 25 touchdown passes, Wilson is one short of Peyton Manning’s rookie record of 26, set in 1998.
Jerry Brewer of The Seattle Times says believe it – Seahawks are the best team in the league. Brewer: “OK, now the nation knows, too: The Seahawks are on something ridiculous right now. Something more effective than Adderall, even. And it’s pure and potent. It’s a level of focus and spirit and commitment that you haven’t seen from this football team since, oh, 2005.”
Steve Kelly of The Seattle Times writes the Seahawks sent a message to the 49ers by delivering bone-crushing blows at every opportunity.
Art Thiel of Sportspressnw.com wades into unchartered territory, lobbing bouquets the Seahawks’ direction. Thiel: “The words unspoken in Seattle for seven years since the infamy in Detroit, now may be used with reckless abandon. Super Bowl. Not saying the Seahawks will make it. It’s just that there does not appear to be a better team in the NFC. Besides, it’s Christmas when dreams are the theme, and Seattle’s sugar plum fairies just danced on the heads of the San Francisco 49ers.”
Mike Silver of Yahoo Sports says that Pete Carroll showed class by not running up the score on Jim Harbaugh. Silver: “While Carroll’s respect for Harbaugh, against whom he had a 1-5 record (including 0-3 in the pros) coming in, seems to be sincere, beating him was undeniably sweet. Carroll said late Sunday night that though he never considered succumbing to the temptation to go for two after Seattle’s last touchdown, ‘everybody else around me [had that thought]. A lot of people reminded me about it.’”
Chris Burke of Sports Illustrated writes that everything is coming together for Seattle – a scary proposition for the rest of the league.
Matt Bowen of the National Football Post writes that he’s been most impressive with Wilson’s ability to make throws outside the numbers.
Lindsay Jones of USA Today says no one in the NFL is having as much right now as Seattle.
Happy Holidays to all of you yanks, I’m about to eat the Christmas feast over here in European land, I got the best gift I could have imagined with that victory last night, what a blast.
My gift to you all, this picture of that headcoach, screencapped it last night, oh the joy!

Jac- Is Sinterklaas paying you a visit? Lol
I’ll be rooting for Dallas next Sunday night (presuming SF has beaten Ariz). Dallas is very much the same team Seattle beat in week two yet the ‘Hawks are very different offensively than what Dallas faced. I like that matchup much better than facing a team they are unfamiliar with. Also, it’s a shorter trip. Always helps.

Great photo, thanks and Merry Christmas to all.

One negative from last night is as great as Wilson played, I really wish he’d tone the Jim Zorn act down. Two weeks now he’s run around behind the line like something in an NFL Films blooper reel. I’d hate to see this become a habit because at one point he’s going to get caught for a 30 yard loss.
That aside however, of Wilson played in any city east of the Rockies, he’d be getting all the national recognition he deserves.

Pete has now surpassed what Holmgren accomplished after three years.
If the Hawks win Sunday, that will be one more win over 3 seasons than what Holmgren had in his first three. And one more playoff appearance than Holmgren had in his first 3 Seahawk seasons.
Just a little perspective for you all. Carroll is ahead of schedule!
Whatever else happens this year is gravy. Next year we should be this good all season, and take the #1 seed, and play at home until the Superbowl. In New Jersey, of all places.

Duke … the one thing I’d debate you on (re: your thoughts on the Wilson jaunts) is the way they wore down the Niners’ defense. By the end of the game, their tongues were hanging outside their face masks. Tiring those big guys out pays great dividends in the rushing game, and also when it comes time to pressure the passer on the next play. Nothing a defensive lineman hates, aside from being 86-ed from an all-you-can-eat buffet, is having to run 20 yards to catch a guy, and then watch him spin and go 20 yards in the other direction.
× Flag comment
Fran Tarkenton Duke.
I think his running around is fine. It’s a core part of his game. And he’s actually annoying the hell out of his opponents doing it.
× Flag comment
Remember when the Seahawks were considered soft…even in their good years under Holmgren? Now they are the most physical, hardest hitting team in the game…on both sides of the ball. I don’t expect any team likes the idea of seeing them on the other side of the field, home game or in Seattle. They are young, fast, and nasty.
× Flag comment
I live in the “big media markets” and I can guarantee you guys Russell Wilson gets all the attention and respect he deserves.
× Flag comment
Dave – I’ll certainly acknowledge that and agree with you. However, I’d be surprised to learn that Carroll / Bevel support much less encourage that sort of thing considering the value placed on field position. In any case, this is sure a fun ride.
× Flag comment
Dave, great article this morning. This line put a huge smile on my face…Boling: “The Seattle Seahawks are now the best team in the National Football League. You can argue the point with them if you want, but it might cost you some teeth.Because that’s how the Seahawks reached this stage, by playing defense like a pack of wolves, and approaching every play with an intensity generally reserved for a fist fight.”
× Flag comment
@ Dukeshire…Agreed, but remember he is a rookie, I would imagine he will improve that next year!
× Flag comment
Pabuwal – Who’s talking about big media markets? Is that in one of the links or are you misquoting?
× Flag comment
On sports talk radio out here, they talk about Russell Wilson as much as they talk about any QB not playing for a local team.
The National ESPN radio shows are also all Russell all the time.
× Flag comment
I live in a big media market too (NYC) and it wasn’t until very recently that Wilson has gotten any attention out here.
× Flag comment
Chris – Running around behind the line is not a core part of his game. Extending plays is, but there are limits to what is fundamentally sound. I argue that these particular scrambles behind the line, where he is turning his back to the line several times, are not. All I am saying is that it’s a poor habit to get into.
× Flag comment
Thanks, Jesus!
Yes, pabuwal, the national media are hitting it hard. ESPN Jaws this morning called the Seahawks the most dangerous team in the NFC.
× Flag comment
ESPN radio absolutely is *not*. I listen at work and unless you are on a local ESPN affiliate, you’re wrong. Griffin still dominates the conversation.
× Flag comment
I heard that Jaworski interview also. He’s been praising Wilson pretty good the past few weeks.
× Flag comment
Dave, What about the report of a shooting last night at a Bellevue bar that some of the Seahawks were hanging out at?
× Flag comment
Yes, moving forward off of that great win, Wilson (and the team in general) will see all the attention they can handle, I imagine. But of course my comment was based on a larger scale.
× Flag comment
Dave – what’s your take on Sweezy vs Moffitt after last night?
× Flag comment
I agree that the attention hasn’t ramped up until recently. But that slow start earlier in the year hurt the perception of him. The national guys don’t understand that Wilson had very little training camp reps compared to Luck and RG3 and a slow start with later improvement was to be expected. But they would have applied the same lazy analysis to anyone regardless of location.
× Flag comment
I don’t know about ESPN Radio, but it seems to me like Wilson is getting more attention on the TV channel. ESPN that is. NFL Network as well. Someone already mentioned how Irvin was chastised for burying the Hawks in October. He had to eat shite last morning, and that was before the Hawks CRUSHED the Whiners.
× Flag comment
mocarob – Damn…
http://blogs.seattletimes.com/today/2012/12/1-killed-1-wounded-in-bar-shooting-in-bellevue/
pabuwal – I’m going to rewatch the game, but Sweezy seemed to play well. He and Unger appeared to work very well together. He’s certainly not as strong as Moffitt but if Eric’s reports of Moffitt’s conditioning are true, Sweezy then locked up his role for the rest of this season, at least.
× Flag comment
Irvin was wearing that number 12 Seahawks Jersey all night last night. Wilson has been profiled on national pregame shows several weeks in a row, generally multiple shows in a week.
× Flag comment
RW seems to be getting more pub lately. More than he did a few weeks ago I mean. He could be there with Luck as far as TV sports coverage goes. I know BobbyK will probably tear me a new one.
× Flag comment
Irvin was wearing the jersey because he “burried” the Seahawks (not Wilson) during their Halloween special. Mucci-Claus gave it to him during uesterday’s pregame. That had everything to do with the team as a whole, not Wilson individually.
× Flag comment
What a sweet, sweet win. Even sweeter, in several ways, the Carolina game in 05.
That hit Kan put on VD is something I’ve been waiting for for the last 5 years, and perfectly sums up what the Hawks are about, with respect to the Niners.
Best part is all the hot air and chest-pounding certainty my Niner-fan friends were ramping up on leading up to this game have evaporated into…complete radio silence.
Merry #%^#-ing Christmas to you, Greg Roman

Bellevue news is sad. Life in America, Not to get political.
Anyone mentioned that the Hawks have won their last 3 games by an average of 40 points a game. Tat;s nuts. I would think it’s been mentioned, but I haven’t seen it here personally.
× Flag comment
pabuwal – You can keep arguing it but you are deluding yourself if you think Wilaon has gotten the same attention and consideration Griffin and Luck have.
× Flag comment
Duke, you’re right about Michael Irvin. I somewhat like him for some reason, but he has doubted the Hawks all year. Buried the Hawks in Oct. Predicted they would lose their last 3 games, before the Bills game obviously.
× Flag comment
Haven’t picked up any news on the shooting last night, but scary as hell, isn’t it? I immediately flashed to the memory of the dangerous Ken Hamlin situation years ago. Except this sounds worse.
Moffitt vs. Sweezy: It seemed to me they were splitting time in practice so I think it probably was exactly what Pete called it, a numbers decision. But I also thought Sweezy played well at first view. I really like his run blocking. He and Breno are really getting good at the two-man cooperative effort where both might fire out at the D-lineman and then one scrapes off to get the linebacker. Sweezy is also quick and effective at the back-side cut block on the zone runs. He looks so athletic, and he plays angry. He might miss somebody, but he keeps going and nails somebody else anyway.

They just replayed the Sherman post game interview on NFL Network..
Funny stuff. He wished Harbaugh a happy birthday. “Hope you enjoyed it”
I think Baldwin & Sherman’s attitude towards their college coach speaks volumes about the kind of person he is..
× Flag comment
Why would Wilson have received the same attention until recently? Luck and Griffin have been playing at the same level the ENTIRE year while Wilson hasn’t come on until recently. Blame the lack of training camp reps on that one.
You really didn’t become a believer until after the Bears game so why would “the stupid national media” have become believers before you?
× Flag comment
Is McQuistan the new Chris Gray – the interior lineman that everyone thinks will be replaced but somehow just keeps starting?
× Flag comment
RW hasn’t gotten the attention of Luck or RGIIi on the year as a whole, but it seems to be much closer lately if nothing else. I can understand RGIII winning OROY, depending on what happens in week 17, butI think it woudl be BS for Luck to win. Don’t misinterpret, I think Luck has been playing fairly well and will be a top 10 QB. I just don’t thin he’s playing as well as RW or RGIII.
× Flag comment
The consecutive 50-pt games, even against lesser opponents, made us hard for the NFL world to ignore, and RW is the igniter of it all for us.
Luck and Griffin have been terrific too – and they had more stature coming into the league, so it’s not a surprise they dominated the conversation early on.
× Flag comment
I like when our team doesn’t get media attention.
The whole ‘south alaska’ & ‘halfway to the north pole’ is funny especially when we go kick someone’s donkey..
WE can fly under the radar & the players will play with a chip on their shoulder because of it.
× Flag comment
Thanks for the insights, Dave. I thought the about Sweezy in the limited amount of time I watched him yesterday night. When/if he gets the pass protection down, he will be a force. I expect him at RG and Carp at LG to start 2013, knock on wood.
× Flag comment
I’m rooting for Dallas to win because it takes RG3 a step down if the Redskins don’t make the playoffs. I truly believe that whoever wins the NFC wins it all, the AFC is weak. I want RW to get the ROY. When he breaks Peyton Manning’s record with 250+ less passes he can’t be overlooked! We are getting attention but that’s history.
× Flag comment
No complaints lately about Petey & Bevell.
Are we still getting out coached? Still think they should get fired??
× Flag comment
Ultimately, who gives a funk whether or not the Hawks get attention from the national media hacks.
How far the Hawks go will depend on execution. Shocking and revolutionary, I know
× Flag comment
The lazy analysts have no regard for the ridiculously easy schedule Luck has faced this year and their fairly weak performance against that schedule. The Colts have only beaten the Jags by over 7 points and haven’t beaten a decent team in nearly 3 months. They’ve lost by double digits against any decent team in the past few months. The Colts are the first double digit win team since the 1995 Eagles to have a negative point differential.
× Flag comment
I agree Trophies mean more than awards.
× Flag comment
Pabuwal – twice in this thread you have attributited quotes to me that I have not said. Why is that? Likely because you know you are wrong. In an effort to simplify my comment to an easily understandable level for you: Wilson has been playing really well, for several games now. The team as a whole has been very dominant during that period. If Russell Wilson played in a market that typically receives more attention as a whole, he would be mentioned in the same breath as Griffin and Luck for ROY consideration, during this period of fine play. Seattle is netoriously an afterthought, for many reasons, and as a result, Griffin and Luck have dominated the conversation, rightfully or wrongly.

Russell Wilson may start getting publicity for not getting publicity. Al Michaels called it out on the national broadcast (Wilson not getting the same attention because he’s not in a major media market.) I don’t know if that will be enough, because the other rookies have been statistically so impressive.
I think it will take Robert Griffin III losing (and looking mediocre) and Wilson doing well against St. Louis (breaking the rookie passing TD record) for Wilson to prevail. Wilson on paper had the best situation at the beginning of the year (defense, proven running back) and had the weakest start.
The game seemed to have gotten in the 49er’s heads. They were trying to fight and take cheap shots after almost every play.
Also Jeremy Lane must have really gotten under their skin – they were really trying to get some “activity” going with Lane after many plays.
× Flag comment
mocarob – I agree with that.
× Flag comment
pab, whether or not the Hawks have gotten their “due” is highly subjective and debatable. I think it’s probable that they have. Us as fans want to live vicariously through them. Fans can’t be trusted to evaluate coverage without good film. Hawks fans have a little bit of a Horazio
× Flag comment
Teams that go on the road and beat the good things get the respect. In the 30 years I have followed the Seahawks, they have rarely done that. Therefore, they have not gotten respect.

If the Hawks win the Sb, they get respect. Simple enough. Especially

From Peter Kings Monday Morning QB-
“Want an example of Wilson the leader? He went to all the rookies after the game Sunday night. “We got work to do tomorrow,” Wilson told his fellow first-year players. “Come in and get your lift in.” Christmas Eve wouldn’t influence the work schedule for Wilson. Tape analysis, 8 a.m. Lift, 10 a.m. That’s what leaders do.”
× Flag comment
mocarob, would ou consider making that bluray available? One of the all time great games and I got to watch it with my 49er father n law and my wife walking out at halftime. They are really poor losers! I however had a great night like most of us here. Anyway, I’d love to have this one as archive. Thanks in advance if you think it’s something we could put together.

Luck must be in a major football market in the college basketball state of Indiana? Luck plays with a roster of players who are old, but used to be good, or young guys that aren’t really good. The Colts aren’t a very talented team and we’re pissing and moaning about Luck playing an easy schedule (from the same fools who worshipped T-Jack “beating” loser teams last year and thinking he was good)?
My Gosh, after it’s all said and done… it’s about championships. I want Wilson to win a bunch of them (more than Peyton Manning has up to this point!). I don’t want him to be a Dan Marino (better than most QBs who have been on teams that actually won championships).

Maybe if 49er fans concentrated on yelling at home games instead of shooting and stabbing the fans of other teams they would have a better home field advantage themselves?

And let me say too, that I couldn’t care less what attention they get. I’m firmly in the camp that is us against everyone else. I’ve taken so much heat over the years that now they’re playing the best football in franchise history, I don’t want any outsider telling me how good they are. My initial comment above was simply a comment on the structure of media attention and not advocating for it to change. But that structure is absolute and anyone who doesnt believe Wilson has been caught up in that is fooling themselves.
BTW, I love Lynch for turning down the on field post game interview. I love him.

Bobbyk -Maybe if 49er fans concentrated on yelling at home games instead of shooting and stabbing the fans of other teams they would have a better home field advantage themselves?
Serious! I had a friend that likes Philly back when they had McNabb, he was so jacked to be going to Oakland and wear his gear with pride.
I told him that he and his wife should wear grey or something fairly neutral or they will be stabbed multiple times, especially since Oakland sucked then.

I honestly don’t understand why anybody would care about National Media attention for the Seahawks.
The Seahawks are on local TV every week and National TV about as much as any other team with a similar win/loss record. Do we really care what some talking head that doesn’t cover the team has to say?

And besides that….
How come I can post now but couldn’t last night?

Mocarob–I am one of those guys you mention who were criticizing the offensive coaching staff for thier poor gameplanning, overly conservative playcalling, and the general ineptitude of the line. I stand by my criticism; until the Chicago game, the were awful.
Since then, things have gotten better each week, as has the coaching staff and the bugaboo of the Hawks the last few years, team discipline. I love it. This was what I was afraid to hope for, the coaches trusting Wilson to air it out, making a concerted effort to get guys like Baldwin and Tate the ball, and in general molding this team into something greater than the sum of its parts.
And no one could be happier than me that they pulled their collective head out of their butt. Last nights game was the most awesome thing I have witnessed since beating Gibbs Redskins and finally putting to rest that awful BS about God being with them since their safety got murdered…Hell, this was even better; this was the best Seattle Sports game since beating the Panthers for the NFC title!
So many players were lights out last night–Kam Chancellor had his best game of the year (that hit was LEGAL!), Baldwin was awesome, Miller and McCoy did well, Rice and Tate did their part, and Turbin and Lynch were incredible.
If the Seahawks continue to perform and coach at this level, they will not lose again this season. Hey, it could happen.
I really hope Seattle wins it all and y’all can rub my nose in the fact that I jumped off the Carrol/bevell/Cable bandwagon after the Miami game…Im pretty much back on it now. They sucked for much of the year, but they really are doing a heck of a job now; and the players are responding.

I posted this in the wrong thread and would like to know. The article is the article that edstang posted in the chat comments thread from the SF reporter ripping Harbaugh…
“Wow, that article that edstang posted was horrible. Glad we don’t have hack reporters like that. One lose does not define a team. Geeze, the truth is the Seahawks were ready and played to win. I’ll be the first to tell you how much I can’t stand Harbaugh but he is a good coach. Not sure what happened there but they sure weren’t ready for what our Seahawks brought to the game.
I’ve never been to a Seahawk game (or any NFL game, mainly just college games, which I love to go to given the chance). How do our fans treat fans for the opposition? It’s ok to talk smack and rib but at least they would feel safe rooting for their team. I hope that’s how it is at the CLink.”

Duke, I think Dave is right about Wilson’s scrambling tiring out the big defenders, but I also get your point about his scrambling being excessive on Sunday night.
One thing I know is it sure would be easier on my heart if he would tone down the possibility of getting his bell rung so often. Last nights game wasn’t close enough for us fans to worry, but if Russell scrambles that much again and gets himself injured we’ll all have second thoughts. Pete needs to reign that in, but I think he will.

On Wilsons scrambling, the thing is, he hasnt been sacked for a huge loss more than a couple times all year; and I cant count the number of times he saved us bigtime on one of those Dave Kreig/Fran Tarkenton scrambles. The thing is, he seems totally in control and to be thinking like a chess player–two moves ahead at all times; defenders arent chess players, more like checkers!
Early in the season they forced Wilson to stay home all too often, to work on his patience, pocket presence, and confidence; that may have been the right thing, as now he’s doing well in all phases. But my personal opinion is that to deliberately tone down his scrambling would be asinine, a huge mistake. They guy is special, and has so much talent its scary…he’s also the most aware scrambling qb I have ever seen. Let him do his thing, as long as he plays smart–no stupidity like on the play RG3 hurt his knee on.
His scrambling is one of the biggest reasons he’s so special, and to take that away or limit it would be take two steps back and would be akin to hamstringing him.
By all means, try to limit the backwards back and forth, and talk to him about certain situations and tactics (ie, dont risk the world running backward on first down, or when in our own territory, etc), but DO NOT by any means make him think too much and take away his uncanny feel for the game. In Russel Wilson I trust, In Carl whatshishame and the rest of the Offensive coaching staff, not so much…
