In my story today, an afterthought to make the roster in 2011, Doug Baldwin led the Seahawks in receiving as a rookie undrafted free agent with 51 catches for 798 yards and four touchdowns.
Baldwin finished with 25 receptions on third down last year, which was tied for No. 7 in the league.
But the Stanford product has struggled to stay healthy this season. He’s tied for fourth on the team in receptions with 11catches for 149 yards and a touchdown.
Baldwin missed most of training camp with a hamstring injury, which affected his ability to develop timing and a rapport with rookie quarterback Russell Wilson.
Baldwin busted his front two teeth out in the final drive of a losing effort in the first game of the season at Arizona. And he sat out Seattle’s win over Dallas with a shoulder issue.
But after missing last week’s game against Detroit with a high-ankle sprain, Baldwin vowed to return early and has been ruled healthy enough to play this weekend at home against Minnesota.
“This is the second-most-frustrating season of my career in playing football,” said Baldwin, calling his junior season at Stanford during Jim Harbaugh’s tenure the most frustrating because of inconsistent playing time. “They went to Detroit, and I was stuck at home watching it on TV, and that killed me. I have to play football.”
Clare Farnsworth of Seahawks.com writes that on Sunday you’ll see two of the best pass rushers in the league in Seattle’s Chris Clemons and Minnesota’s Jared Allen.
Danny O’Neil of The Seattle Times provides some keys to victory for the Seahawks.
Jim Moore of 710 ESPN Seattle predicts a Seahawks victory over Minnesota in a rout, 27-10. Moore: “One of these days, I’m going to be wrong with my prediction on a Seahawks game. One of these days, it’s going to be just like the horse races I used to handicap at Longacres – whoever I pick to win will finish way up the track. But this is not one of these days. This is a day in which I extend my streak of picking against the spread on Seahawks games to 8-1. The only miss was the Green Bay game in which Golden Tate snatched a victory away from the Packers, leading to the real officials returning.”
Dave Wyman of 710 ESPN Seattle writes that he doesn’t expect Seattle’s issues on third down to continue. Wyman: “I entirely reject the notion that third down is a problem and write it off as pure happenstance. Besides, the Seahawks have enough to fear with a 4-4 record and the 49ers and Bears on the schedule to be worrying about a problem that doesn’t have one logical explanation.”
ESPN’s Mike Sando likes the Seahawks over the Vikings, 21-13. Sando: “Seattle hasn’t lost at home this season. The Vikings, though 2-2 in their last four road games, have a 3-8 road record since 2011.”
John Breech of CBS Sports previews the game here.
Pete Prisco of CBS Sports points to CB Richard Sherman vs. WR Percy Harvin and OT Russell Okung vs. DE Jared Allen as two of his matchups to watch this weekend.
Bucky Brooks of NFL.com has an interesting list of college prospect to watch this week. He also points to one name rising up the draft boards in the scouting community, BYU pass rusher Ezekiel Ansah. He compares the 6-foot-6, 270-pound Ansah to Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul in terms of skill set.

Its good to have Baldwin back!

Fo sho!
That guy must have sure regenerative powers. Getting amped up for the first game of the 8-0 run coming up!!! Looking forward to some major scoring this week, some serious time of possession with some 3rd down stops. “This will be the start of “swing point city”.

Hey 77-
Did you know any of the Rasmussen sisters in Paulsbo?

Oh Jim Moore, aren’t you just so f’ing smart…? What an arrogant SOB.
Wyman doesn’t think that the 3rd down defensive struggles have a “logical explanation”? Sadly Dave, this isn’t a one game anomaly. They’ve given up 16 (of 37) firsts on 3rd and 10 or more, through just 8 games. That is a real issue, and one that has very real explanations why. Execution and scheme. If that’s not a problem in his book, I will hate to learn what he believes *is* a problem.

Eric – Only 6 views on the “blitz” video… Are you related to this guy? You have to know him. Fess up, now… lol!

Watched the video clip of 2002 Minn-Sea game. Granted he had great blocking from OL but Alexander seems to almost be disliked to the point of Chone Figgins here in Seattle. This guy should be in the Ring of Honor some day soon. Why so much hatred?

IMO, personality as much as anything. Then after the contract, completely tanking.

Alexander would fall down before contact with a CB his last year here. It was so frustrating watching a 225lb RB afraid to be hit by a 180lb CB

Rushed for over 200yds on a broken foot in 2006.
Alexander haters can bite me.

Sluggo,
Intereseting question about the Rasmussen sisters. No, I didn’t know them. I was partial to the Shotwell sisters (Mary, Janet and Muriel) truth be told. But that’s been decades ago.
Also, note that it’s spelled ‘Poulsbo’ even though it is pronounced ‘Paulsbo’ and was suppose to be spelled that way until some kind of clerical error in the post office over a hundred years ago.

you took the good with the bad with Alexander. He had a bit of that franco harris avoiding contact thing going on, which nobody likes in a RB, except when he was around the goal line, where he was the best I’ve ever seen, and you could see how much strength he actually had.

2006 broken foot.
2007 broken hand.

That 200yd stat in 2006 was in reference to the GB MNF snow game..

i’m basically w/you mocarob – for a 5-yr stretch he was a top-3 running back in the league, and a very reliable yardage eater and scorer for us.
his career track was one of those where he went from great, to not good, more quickly than you would have expected. in big part b/c of the injuries you mention. and, unfortunately, coinciding with him getting his big contract.

He said Carpenter is out! How is everyone glossing over that? I didn’t even know he was concussed. Really hope Moffitt is ready
× Flag comment
Not a hater, just saying why people rag on him. Before the foot injury he was a beast. Still makes me mad that he was horse collard on that play and there was no flag
× Flag comment
Remember when Alexander refused medical treatment for his foot fracture in favor of prayer, in 2006? Things like that are why some didn’t care for him. Also, Shaun Alexander is relevant in 2012 how?
How did Carp not get mention on the injury report, or did Inmiss it. Eric said nothing about it. He did look gimpy in Detroit but damn, that sucks. Come on Moffitt…
× Flag comment
The last report I seen on Carp was questionable. He may have been downgraded.

Dookey, We’re talking about the 2002 Vikings highlights I posted a link to in a previous thread. SA scored 5td’s before halftime.
I posted it becuz we’re playing the Vikings tomorrow.

What about the Strickland sisters in Poulsbo? Or Ryan Villapoto.
Know them?

Carpenter has a concussion.

He was listed as questionable on the injury report.Carp was gimpy in the niners game as well.Guess McQuisten slides to LG and Moffit back home at RG.
I met Shaun Alexander last year for the BCS Championship and he was a cool guy.But on the field he relied on great vision and cut back runs, but he could never be counted on to get tough yards like 3-1 situations.I hated that!

Seattle guard James Carpenter will miss Sunday’s game against Minnesota after the Seahawks ruled him out because of a concussion.

lol Moca-
I didn’t grow up there my cousins did. They are all now late 50′s early 60′s. (yes, I’m so old I fart dust)
But, I remember as a young boy going to to Uncles fishing boat, and trying to catch perch off the docks. And I remember it seemed to be a “red tide” all the time. So they wouldn’t have to take me down to go fishing, I guess.
I grew up in Edmonds, and used to whack salmon in the sond nd snohomish ll the time as a kid. Life in Seattle back in those days was very good, clean fun…
