Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said second-year receiver Doug Baldwin is expected to play on Sunday against Minnesota
“Doug looks to be ready to go,” Carroll said. “He had a full week of practice. He surprised us. Coming out of Monday we weren’t sure, and he just practiced on Wednesday, got through it and had a good week.”
Baldwin, who suffered a high-ankle sprain against San Francisco on Oct. 18, said he felt like he was healthy enough to play against Detroit last week if the team would have allowed him to, but is thankful to be available this weekend.
It’s a quick recovery for Baldwin. Typically, high-ankle sprains can take four to six weeks to recover from.
“Before the game last week, I knew for a fact that I would be back this week,” Baldwin said. “If allowed I would have been able to play. It wouldn’t have been pretty, but I would have been able to be out there.”
Carroll did not rule out defensive tackle Jason Jones for Sunday. However, Jones did not practice for a second straight week due to an ankle issue, and appears unlikely to play on Sunday, which means Seattle will use Greg Scruggs or Clinton McDonald in passing situations to rush the passer as a defensive tackle.
Scruggs returned to practice after missing Thursday with an oblique injury.
Receiver Braylon Edwards also did not practice this week because of a swollen knee, and has been ruled out by Carroll for this Sunday’s game.
Carroll said that John Moffitt (knee) should be available for this weekend, but will be used as a backup for both guards and the center position if active, and is not expected to start.
Rookie receiver Jermaine Kearse, elevated from the practice squad to the active roster this week, is expected to be active and play both offense and special teams on Sunday, according to Carroll.
However, Carroll would not say if cornerback Walter Thurmond will be activated from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list to the active roster for the Minnesota game.
“Walter had a great week,” Carroll said. “And he’s had two great weeks. He’s been impressive out here. We wanted to see what today looked like in practice and all that, and we’re going to make our decision before game time.”
Defensive tackle Alan Branch was excused from practice today due to a death in the family, but is expected to play on Sunday.
Good news!!

The Seahawks twitter page had Carpenter listed as questionable. Is that the case?

@krieg: it said death in the family… Good news?

I’m sure he was referring to Baldwins availability.

Yes, let’s pause for a moment regarding Alan Branch and family. Never an easy situation.
That said, I’m confident Krieg was referring to the good news that Baldwin will play.

I’m sure he was… My comment was tongue in cheek, while at the same time putting Branchs loss in the spotlight a bit

Yes Baldwin playing is the good news. Please Hawks come out of this with a “W”

Let’s hope our smart QB has figured out his 3Q problems and busts it wide open. I’ve liked what I’ve seen from Rice this year and I think he is only getting better. What he needs is a strong supporting cast to take some of the pressure away and he’ll start busting it wide open.

So is it two or three weeks in a row now that Moffit has been dubbed “available, but only as depth is needed”?
× Flag comment
Braylon’s days have to be numbered. He would seem to be the logical choice in order to clear space for Thurmond. Either that or stick Moffit on IR, I guess.

When they activate Thurmond, Person will be dumped. Not so long as Moffitt and Edwards have a chance to contribute.

The fact that Mike Person is even on our roster completely evaded me. Still, with Braylon’s knee acting up, and Moffit still not quite recovered from his knee issue, I could see either one of them either being IR’d. In Braylon’s case, I could see him being cut outright. He hasn’t been all that productive, but we got him on the cheap.
If Person is doing well on Special Teams, then he might actually be the more valuable player at this point in the season. Edwards is close to being a shadow of what he was, which is still good enough to productive when he’s healthy, but it’s starting to look like he’s in the same boat with Winslow.
If Moffit’s knee is still bothering him, I’d just assume that they shut him down. Why let him carry on and risk doing further damage?

We we will have Rice, and the Vikings will not have Carlson. We when the battle of oft injured player swaps.

Yes, funny stuff BobbyK.
So glad to have Baldwin back. We need him to play at last years level down the stretch.

Good call georgia. Folks on this blog have mentioned Baldwins durability issues in Stanford but I failed to make the mental note. Could someone with knowledge on the subject set me straight? Thanks.

That was some funny stuff for my morning read of the blog thx Bobby! I can only imagine how bad it will be for you if the Hawks lose this weekend.

I watched the last game again and was impressed by a play I’d forgotten about. The play that set up Rice’s TD was made by Tate. It doesn’t show in the stats but he manufactured a defensive pass interference call that wouldn’t have been called if he hadn’t made the move he did. It got us 41 yards!

Tomorrow’s game just got a tad bit tougher with the word that Carp is out with a concussion. Hopeully Moffit can go at RG and McQ can slide over and fill Carp’s spot without much impact.
Still a bummer though. I was really liking Carp’s play on the left side. His footwork is so much better over there.
