Baldwin out vs. Lions with high-ankle sprain

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll had more bad news on receiver Doug Baldwin.

Seattle’s leading receiver from last year has a high-ankle sprain, and has been ruled out of Sunday’s game at Detroit.

Baldwin has dealt with a rash of injuries this season, starting with a hamstring injury that forced him to miss most of preseason play.

Baldwin also had a shoulder issue that kept him out of the Green Bay game.

With the injuries, Baldwin’s numbers have suffered. He has 11 receptions for 149 yards and a touchdown in six games played.

“Unfortunately he’s going to be a couple week out anyway,” Carroll said. “That’s a change for us, because we were just getting him going, and felt like he was coming around. But we’ll get him back when we can.”

Carroll said Charly Martin and Golden Tate will fill in at slot with Baldwin out.

Tate also will have some competition for reps at split end with Bralyon Edwards. Carroll would not say who his starting split end will be against Detroit this weekend.

Edwards, a University of Michigan product, returns home to play at Ford Field this weekend.

“He’s going to battle this week again,” Carroll said, when asked if Tate will start at split end. “We know that Braylon is playing well, and working hard at it. We want to make him available, so the competition is always on. And I expect both of those guys to play.”

Defensive lineman Jason Jones will miss some practice time this week with a sore ankle. Carroll said Malcolm Smith (concussion) should make it back, and will practice today, and has been cleared.

Carroll said he’ll take a close look at cornerback Walter Thurmond (leg) and offensive lineman John Moffitt (knee) this week to see how close they are to returning to the field.

Carroll would not say if either player will figure into the equation this weekend.

“Getting Walter back, this is a big boost to us,” Carroll said. “He’s a fantastic athlete. He’s a nickel guy, but he can play outside as well. Out of nowhere you get a guy back on your roster that’s a real big opportunity for us. How far we can bring him, I don’t know that.”

Carroll went on to say that the coaching staff has always thought of Thurmond as a starting nickel cornerback in term of his potential, as well as a guy who can start on the outside.

Receiver Sidney Rice also talked about his show of frustration last Thursday against San Francisco, when he threw his mouthpiece after Russell Wilson’s interception when he forced the ball into triple coverage to Edwards

“I get frustrated when we win, too,” joked Rice, when asked if he was frustrated about his lack of touches last week against the Niners. “A lot of people do. Like I said, it’s all about winning. It’s not only when we’re losing. I just may show emotion different ways out there on the field.

“I take you were talking about when I threw my mouthpiece. I was a little upset because you can’t win ball games turning the ball over to a team like the 49ers – a real solid defense. You’ve got to protect the ball. And that’s our main focus around here.”

Sad about Baldwin he just started to look like he did last year. High Ankle sprains can take awhile to recover from 4 to 8 weeks. I think moving Tate to slot and Edwards to the split end will be beneficial to both of these players.

  2. Really sucks – you could see a big difference in him when he was healthy this year. That’s an important loss for us.

  3. sluggo42 says:

ya, I think tate is better suited at slot, but maybe he doesn’t have the slot routes down, so he would be useless…

    Maybe Edwards at slot…

  4. sluggo42 says:

Edwards is tall enough that the midget could see him…

  5. chrisj122 says:

This has not been DB year. I just get the feeling that he’s going to have some kind injury all season.

Maybe they should rest him the remainder of the regular season and if we can make the playoffs he can come in and do some good things at that time.

  6. Looks like Carroll has finally started catching on about that Golden Tate thing.

I’m not sure what Edwards has left, but hopefully he can produce like he did with the Jets. Wilson and him have some real chemistry going, similar to Jackson and Rice last year.

  7. Did Pete have any news on what caused the Richard Sherman’s transformation into Optimus Prime?

  8. Time to call T.O.!

  9. Dukeshire says:

Whatever he has left, it will surely be more that what Tate has done, overall.

  10. Optimus Prime #25 can cement a Pro Bowl trip this weekend if he can shut down Megatron.

  11. GeorgiaHawk says:

Shermanator VS Megatron coming to a theatre near you.

  12. sluggo – You keep complaining about mindless banter, and posts . . . .Edwards is tall enough that the midget could see him…

Then quit posting Dumba$$ stuff like that to specifically stir it up.

  13. Heres hoping that Tate moves to the slot and Edwards goes to split end. Talent wise, thats better than having Martin at slot and Tate at split end.

  14. Dukeshire says:

Browner will see more of Johnson than Sherman. If that is, they play their normal positions.

  15. Wow. Baldwin has suddenly turned into a cream puff.

  16. Wow, Tate has one bad game and even Dukeshire is hopping off the bandwagon he so recently joined (no worries dude, overall I still think youre cool)…

Meanwhile, Baldwin, the guy everyone loves, has 11 catches for 149 yards all season. He has a history of injuries in college, and Harbaugh has to be laughing his butt off now…

For the record, I love both Taterhead and Baldwin, and Im not giving up on either guy, but Tate is far outperforming Baldwin this year, and Edwards hasnt done jack.

Rice, Edwards, and Tate will work, but no one is scared of Edwards. God, we need a big fast stud SE soooo bad…which Ive been saying for like EIGHT FREAKING YEARS! But every year, everyone says, oh no, we dont need to take a WR in the first…yeah, right people…y’all are about to jump on the bandwagon…

Im frustrated with the entire offense and coaching staff; the only guys who get a free pass are SuperStud Lynch and Turbin; the rest of the offense has mostly sucked, and certainly underperformed, especially the coaching staff.

Its time for the coaches to let Wilson let ‘er rip…do or die…we aint gonna do better than 9-7 running this High School Offense…Id rather see us have some fireworks on offense and lose on a pick than lose with an offense that cant cross midfield in the second and third quarters…

Either Wilson sucks, or the coaches are tying him down too much..the training wheels HAVE TO come off–yesterday! We dont have to throw for 300 yards, but we do have to throw on first down, and learn to run on thrid and 2 or third and four…

Did I mention how much I detest Darrel Bevell?!

  17. hawksome says:

Ole Petey caught lying again (about why Rice was mad).

  18. Dukeshire says:

STTBM – Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, I was never on Tate’s Bandwagon. lol. I’ve seen improved play from him, and I loved his block on Le, but he’s still my least favorite Seahawk. In any case…
