In my story today, cornerback Walter Thurmond’s return to practice this week gives Seattle another athletic body in an already crowded position at defensive back.
The Seahawks have 11 defensive backs on the roster, including six cornerbacks.
And while Seattle head coach Pete Carroll would like to see Thurmond back in action, the Seahawks will be patient to make sure the third-year pro is fully healthy after a broken fibula cut short his 2011 season.
A fourth-round pick by Seattle in the 2010 draft, Thurmond already battled back from major knee reconstructive surgery during his senior season at the University of Oregon.
But after a long rehab, Thurmond managed to make it onto the field his rookie season, playing in 13 games, including a start at cornerback against New Orleans on Oct. 21, 2010.
Thurmond finished with 33 tackles and six pass deflections his rookie season.
Clare Farnsworth of Seahawks.com notes that Seattle became the fifth road team in the first six weeks to lose on Thursday night football.
ESPN’s Mike Sando lists the Seahawks’ hands as falling on his NFC West stock watch.
Matt Bowen of the National Football Post has some notes on the Bears-Lions game from Monday night. Of particular interest is how effective the Bears defense were in limiting receiver Calvin Johnson, with Charles Tillman on him most of the night.
Carlos Monarrez of the Detroit Free Press notes that four former Seahawks are on the Lions roster, and says that at least one has complained privately at how he was treated in Seattle. I’m going to take a wild guess and say that the person complaining is jettisoned defensive end Lawrence Jackson.
Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports that Lions receiver and Seattle native Nate Burleson suffered a broken leg against Chicago and is out for the year.
If the season ended today the Seahawks would be on the outside looking in for the postseason, according to the playoff predictor at NFL.com.
Rob Rang of NFLDraftScout.com has Seattle selecting Tennessee receiver Justin Hunter at No.24 in next year’s draft if the season ended today.
