In my story today, Seahawks defensive coordinator Gus Bradley and players on his defense discussed how to contain Cam Newton this week, as Seattle faces one of the more dynamic players in the league.
The Panthers have the 11-ranked rushing offense in the league, and are averaging more than 10 explosive plays – runs over 12 yards or passes over 16 yards – a game.
“You just have to have pursuit, and we’ve got to keep him contained, just like everybody else,” Bradley said. “(Aaron) Rodgers was the same way, the way he could get out of the pocket and extend the plays to throw it – but this guy can throw it or run it. So we’ve got to make sure that when he does get outside the pocket, we’ve got some guys that can really track him and try to lead him to the sideline, and use the sideline to help them, and just use our tackling fundamentals.”
Dave Boling of The News Tribune writes that Newton offered some sage advice for Russell Wilson, who’s going through a similar experience to what the Carolina quarterback experienced in his rookie season last year. Newton: “You have to have a strong foundation of mental capacity, and not let your values alter by no means,” he said. “If you believe in something – no matter how the season is going – you just have to be strong as a person. In this league you’re going to have success, you’re going to have downfalls, but on those downfalls, you have to treat it like a speed bump and not a roadblock.”
Dave Wyman of 710 ESPN Seattle offers 11 reasons for the Seahawks not to fear Cam Newton. Here’s reason No. 1: “Brandon Mebane. The Seahawks defensive tackle turned in one of the most dominant defensive performances I’ve ever seen against the Rams on Sunday. This comes from someone who had a front-row seat for Cortez Kennedy’s Hall of Fame career.”
Former Seahawks quarterback Jon Kitna joins Brock Huard and Mike Salk of 710 ESPN Seattle, adding to the chorus of former NFL quarterback who live in the area saying to be patient with Russell Wilson in this audio link.
Clare Farnsworth of Seahawks.com says Wilson is preparing for a homecoming in his return to North Carolina.
Danny O’Neil of the Seattle Times says it’s time for Doug Baldwin to start clicking in the Seahawks’ offense.
ESPN’s NFL analyst Ron Jaworski says that Wilson’s height is affecting his ability to see downfield: “When I look at the tape, it is clear to me that Wilson must move in order to see his targets downfield. He can be effective when he gets his passing lanes, but as soon as he has to move, it disrupts the timing and rhythm of the offense — the cornerstones of the NFL game. We will see a few big plays from him and he definitely has a live arm, but I just think his size will always hurt him.”
Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports on the Rams 17-3 win over previously undefeated Arizona. St. Louis sacked Cardinals QB Kevin Kolb nine times. St. Louis (3-2) is over .500 for the first time since 2006. The Rams did get some bad news though, with receiver Danny Amendola suffering a broken collarbone during the game
Ron Green Jr. of the Charlotte Observer talks with Carolina linebacker Luke Kuechly, who remembers facing Russell Wilson during his ACC days back at Boston College: “Chasing him around, that was the challenge,” Kuechly said. “A lot of guys in college can run but can’t throw or they can throw but can’t run, he’s a guy that can do it all. He can run, he can pass.
“He’s a smart quarterback, too. He knows where he’s going with the ball. That’s how he was in college. He knew how to pick apart our defense at BC and he did that a couple of times. He’s smart. Don’t misconceive his size. He can get around and he can throw the ball.”
I agree with Danny O’Neil.
It’s time for Doug Baldwin to start clicking.

It’s weird how after I tore Georgia’s horsespit theory about me being Dickshire to smithereens that he hasn’t responded? Weird!

I wish “Jaws” would have explained how Wilson was able to throw over a very tall offensive line at Wisconsin. Jaws usually sticks to covering the East Coast teams…maybe he shouldn’t vary away from that.
That long pass to Rice on the final drive of the Green Bay game was a timing and rythym play. Pete Carroll actually allowed Wilson to look downfield.
Was Wilson’s offensive line shorter during the pre-season?

We could use an Amendola/Welker type. Perhaps they should’ve kept Winslow around? Maybe Martin can be that guy but, I haven’t seen it so far.

Personally, I don’t want Newton offering any advice to Wilson. Wilson is a hard worker who is a good/great person, whereas there are plenty of documented examples of Newton being too good for others (even though he’s physically talented).
There’s a difference with physical tools and mental tools. You put the brain of Wilson into the body of Newton and I think you have HOF type of potential (not that either of them can’t make it on their own – now – it’d just be easier long-term).

Baldwin could be that guy if he can get healthy and stay that way. IMO

Ok guys not getting an answer I will try again…Does anyone know Mebane’s status for Sunday?

Georgia is a cholster!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks,
I think the Hawks can cover that spread as long as they can keep Newton contained and minimize the explosive plays he’s capable of.
I personally don’t think Newton will ever have as good as a season as he did in his rookie year, Kinda think it was fluke.

Weird. Am I just reading this completely wrong? (Re: someone else claiming the Seahawks are favored by 7 on the road, which would be insane, IMHO, that’s the kind of line Green Bay is getting playing at Indianapolis, again, if I’m reading this right.)

sheesh. I’m pretty new to this blog forum and I don’t know what to think. 70% of the posts seem to have little or nothing to do with the Seahawks. Hell, maybe everything on here is posted by 2 guys with 7 or 8 user names each both eating lasagna in their mom’s basement. A pot smoker calling out an alcoholic? whatever.
The posts that are about the Seahawks usually seem negative and whiny. Lots of people have the “right” answer to turn things around, so I’m sure they’ll be working in the NFL in no time. Hasslebeck is gone, maybe Flynn will be the guy at some point, but RW is who we have at the moment so maybe we should focus on the positives from time to time?

Anybody think having around 50 friends and family in the stands will affect Wilson either positively or negatively? I’ve never been in that sort of situation as an athlete, but it seems like you’d maybe feel extra pressure to do well. Maybe at the NFL level that stuff doesn’t even play in to it. It’s not intramurals!

On most of these threads, you forget what the actual article was about since everything seems to gravitate to name calling and the QB controversey after 10 posts. By the time I got to the bottom of the posts about Mebane’s calf, I had forgotten it was about Mebane’s claf. There was more guessing as to who Dickshire was than there was Hawk talk.

Oh yeah…bracket Steve Smith, play stout run defense, shadow Cam, run Beast and Hulk, Seattle wins ugly game by scoring 21 or 24.
× Flag comment
Is anyone else surprised that the Panther’s are favored?
I don’t think I am but I would take the Hawks to cover.
× Flag comment
That three points at home is usually nothing more than home field advantage. With Seattle’s run defense and punishing run game, you’d think they could get the line back to even.
× Flag comment
Having Carp back is huge, i wish moffitt was back as well.
I think we’d have won that game readily if not for the stupid penalties!
× Flag comment
Mojjonation – scoring 21 or 24 isn’t winning ugly – Winning 7-6 would be UGLY!!
The most frustrating thing about our 2 losses
1. Watching them both look crappy last night
2. Knowing we could/should have won and found a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
I don’t really care the reasons – in neither of those games should we have been trying to score to get the lead back – Should have controlled both of those games – and we had chances to do so. We have to find a way to win on the road – it’s an old story.
I want 10-12 wins every year and know that if we play at home or on the road we have a great chance to win. We are not there yet
× Flag comment
tacomahawk73- I don’t know why this blog has degenerated so fast and is becoming the no fun blog? Hopefully that will change with some more winning.
We have a very young but talented team overall and we are just one win away from being just one game back from first place. And we have all our division foes at home in the last half of the season.
How fast this team grows up will determine how far we go this year imo.
I am still very excited about this team and it’s future.

I’m baffled by the betting line too. But what baffles me even more is how the Rams pulled off nine sacks against the Cards when the Hawks got what — one? And maybe three QB hits.

True. 21 or 24 would be an improvement. 7-6 would be a reminder of Cleveland last year. Good god.
Having the Rams drop Arizona to 1-1 in division helped immensely. Now we just need the Rams to drop one. That Niners game in a couple of weeks is looking mighty big right now. I figured Arizonas offensive woes and last minute luck would catch up to them. I just didn’t see it happeneing in St. Louis. Being 0-3 in division could be a disaster unless everyone holds court at home and loses on the road. We will see.
Our passing game has me worried right now. I truly feel we are one dimensional, regardless of what the self proclaimed experts, and people we actually think are experts, say. The defenses inability to get off the field on third down will come back to bite us against teams who actually have an offense. How many chances do guys like Tom Brady need to put you a score or two down? If we can come out of the first half at 4-4, 10 wins is not unreasonable. With our pass game nearly non existent, neither is 6-10.
× Flag comment
Its been years since the Seahawks Defense has stopped a good offense on the road, at least to the extent they have shut down offenses the past 4 weeks.
But the Rams and Cardinals have 2 of the worst offenses in the NFL. Sunday will be a huge test to determine if the Seahawks Defense has really reached “elite” status.
× Flag comment
Personally, I think Dickshire is JIRISH. (For the record, J is fine when he isnt insulting people–which is most of the time.)
I havent gotten worked up over the qb stuff, but I detest Bevell and am not happy with Carrol and Cable. I think Ive stated why with plenty of logic and of course my usual strident opinion enough times.
The Seahawks have an offense so inept it hurts to watch. Potential doesnt count for, and I for one am more than bored watching them, I am incensed. Its hard to find positive things to say when the line stinks for the sixth straight year yet the Cards line is outplaying us with scrubs. Wow. Just wow.
Yep, Lynch is awesome, our D is great except the usual third down stupidity, and ST is pretty good. Not enough to be a playoff team, and there really is no legitimate excuse for that, not with such talent team-wide.
So I for one am not a happy camper, but this forum is a good healthy outlet for my frustration. If you dont like my posts, skip them, I dont blame you. They are full of frustration and consternation.

NEwton? No way Red Bryant can catch him. Gonna be interesting.
I may watch only the D play in this game. I cant stand another Flores-like pseudo offensive display.

Hawks an underdog, not a surprise at all. You’re not going to find many instances of a rookie QB being favored on the road. Seattle hasn’t proven anything this year so from a betting standpoint you have an unproven team going against what looks like a below average team. That line looks fair to me.
Rams getting all those sacks on AZ, that was a surprise and it really shows that the Hawks pass rush has a lot of work to do. Both AZ and STL have bad O-Lines and the Hawks didn’t get good pressure on either of those teams.

The Seahawks D has make sure they stay inside the lanes on throwing downs. Sam Bradford had the red sea part for him way to many times last week and if you do that for Cam newton he will make you pay with his legs. Bobby Wagner is going to have a lot on his plate dealing with Greg Olsen as a pass catcher between the hashes and the threat that is Cam Newtons running ability, the Seahawks nickleback (be it Byron Maxwell or Danny Gorrer) is going to have to help him out in that middle zone on third down if the seahawks defense wants to improve in that area. Also gotta get Russell Wilson into a rhythm and let him put a bit more of the game on his shoulders, he can handle it. Russel Okung needs to stay in front of his man, we’ve seen him chasing after defenders to much this season it’s time to step it up.

I just saw that.

ya, BBnate, back away from the chibata bro…
Aside from the 50 different directions this thread, and the last 20 before that, has to do with stopping Cam. Gus acknowledges that the 3rd downs are perplexing to say the least. In my eyes, the last few games have been a carbon copy. We always crush them on 1st and 2ond down, then we go zone, rush 3 and they make the play. time after time. I am hoping that they actually change it up and go monster blitz about half the game, and just throw Cam a rush he is totally not ready for, and totally blow up their game plan, then back and forth with it, so they really have absolutely no idea when it’s coming. Do a lot of fake line charging with safetys and LB’s, and then not rushing, or other times faking with the outside guys, and then send some insides. They need to create confusion and get out of the predictable rut of zone. Hell, I would have no problem with a jailbreak rush on a few plays. Just do SOMETHING different for a change.
And repeat the above for the offense. Quit being so predictable, and quit out thinking themselves. Quit the odd funny calls on 3rd and short. Hike it and get behind Carp and OKung and POWER run the damn ball. Quit cute, smach some mouth.
Also, everybody quit posting on the Flynn/RW topic. I have never seen a topic get so beat to death. Just give it a rest willya?

One thing I have noticed is a lot more drunken posting. You could say Seattle’s crappy offense is driving us all to drink lol!
I dont have a problem with comments veering from the original content of posts–Im perhaps the worst offender in fact! I love tangents, and dont always want to dicuss the thread post…
And SeahawkAddicts, which was my favorite blog for a long time, first fell apart and went to caca when Steffes got a real job and got all humpty over everything; he started monitoring and whining every time someone said the slightest thing off-topic..it ran off most of the commenters, and pretty much started the beginning of the end. And he ended up polluting his reputation by sounding like a whiny Beeotch. And I dont think he really is that, but he sure was for his last few months running the blog…
My point is, I dont think its the off-topic posts per se that are having a deleterious affect on this blog. Rather, I think the constant personal attacks on specific commenters, the veiled insults, and the pathological need of some fans to always be “right” is the problem. Is it so ego-boosting to have “called” the struggles of our rookie qb?! Really?!
(I personally think he could and should be playing just like Tannehill or RGIII, and that its Carrol and Bevell’s crappy inept gameplan and playcalling that are holding him back. If Dalton could have a great rookie year, so could WIlson…if only they’d loosen the reins…)
I hope Eric doesnt start being a Tangent Nazi…just my two cents. It would be great if people would stop attacking eachother, and quit ragging Dukeshire and Bobbyk…rag on them when a certain comment merits it, but dont rag on them just because they have a cult following. There will always be people who cannot form thier own opinions and so follow a person with a stronger personality…its isnt Duke/Bobby’s fault weak people want to be their Ditto Heads.
