As free agency approaches Tuesday, here’s a quick look by position at what players are locked up for the Seattle Seahawks and what players are set to hit free agency.
By my count, the Seahawks have
57 58 (CB Ron Parker is signed through 2013) players currently on the 80-man roster, 16 unrestricted free agents, three restricted free agents and two exclusive rights free agents.
If players have not been noted as restricted or exclusive rights free agents in the comments section, then they are unrestricted free agents.
Quarterback – On the roster: Tarvaris Jackson, Josh Portis
Set to hit free agency: Charlie Whitehurst
Comment: Whitehurst likely will be allowed to test the market.
Running back – On the roster: Marshawn Lynch, Leon Washington, Vai Taua, Tyrell Sutton, Allen Bradford.
Set to hit free agency: Michael Robinson, Justin Forsett
Comment: I’m a little surprised Robinson has not been signed. Forsett is too similar to Washington, but I think there will be some interest in him by other teams.
Tight end – On the roster: Zach Miller, Cameron Morrah, Anthony McCoy, John Nalbone.
Set to hit free agency: John Carlson
Comment: Carlson is receiving interest from several teams, and although the Hawks would like him back, he’ll probably move on. Nalbone is a smooth athlete and decent run blocker, and could make a run at a spot on the final roster during training camp.
Receiver – On the roster: Sidney Rice, Mike Williams, Ben Obomanu, Deon Butler, Golden Tate, Doug Baldwin, Kris Durham, Ricardo Lockette, Charly Martin.
Set to hit free agency: None
Comment: Rice and Williams have to stay healthy, and one of the other guys need to emerge as a steady contributor in 2012.
Offensive line – On the roster: Russell Okung, John Moffitt, James Carpenter, Max Unger, Robert Gallery, Breno Giacomini, Lemuel Jeanpierre, Allen Barbre, Brent Osborne, Paul Fanaika.
Set to hit free agency: Paul McQuistan, Mike Gibson.
Comment: I thought McQuistan would be signed already but maybe he will have more interest on the open market after showing some versatility last season. McQuistan could be looking for a place where he can start. Gibson is a restricted free agent.
Defensive line – On the roster: Chris Clemons, Brandon Mebane, Alan Branch, Pep Levingston, Dexter Davis, Pierre Allen, John Graves, Adrian Taylor.
Set to hit free agency: Red Bryant, Anthony Hargrove, Raheem Brock, Clinton McDonald, Jimmy Wilkerson.
Comment: What happens with Bryant in free agency will be one of the more interesting storylines to follow next week. McDonald is an exclusive rights free agent. Wilkerson was on the inured reserve all last year with a knee issue, but Seattle had high hopes for the Oklahoma product as a situational pass rusher.
Linebacker – On the roster: K.J. Wright, Malcolm Smith, Mike Morgan, Adrian Moten, Jameson Konz, Tressor Baptiste.
Set to hit free agency: Leroy Hill, David Hawthorne, Heath Farwell, Matt McCoy, David Vobora.
Comment: This group could see the most turnover, with starters Hill and Hawthorne set to hit the market.
Cornerback – On the roster: Brandon Browner, Richard Sherman, Byron Maxwell, Walter Thurmond, Coye Francies, Jesse Hoffman, Phillip Adams, Ron Parker.
Set to hit free agency: Marcus Trufant,
Ron Parker, Roy Lewis, Kennard Cox.
Comment: Cox is an exclusive rights free agent. Seattle is much younger and has more depth at this position than a year ago.
Safety – On the roster: Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor, Chris Maragos, Jeron Johnson.
Set to hit free agency: Atari Bigby.
Comment: Bigby could return to back up Chancellor, but also might be looking for a place where he can compete for a starting job.
Specialty – On the roster: P Jon Ryan, LS Clint Gresham.
Set to hit free agency: K Steven Hauschka
Comment: Hauschka is a restricted free agent and has been tendered at $1.26 million, which gives Seattle the right of first refusal.
