  1. Eric,

If you feel that Carpenter is going to be the LG next season, do you think there’s any way that he’ll move there later this season so he can get some experience between Okung and Unger? If that’s a move they are going to make, I think it needs to be done ASAP. There’s no substitute for continuity and it needs to start yesterday, IMO, if that’s what they are going to do. They could simply tell Gallery they aren’t going to play him until he’s 100% and move Carpenter there for a few weeks (like they did week 1). A little time extra at LG would be best for all involved, I believe. I know it sucks to keep switching, especially rookies, but if that’s where he’s going to end up (and you’ve said it yourself now today and in the transcript I read yesterday from the live chat) I would think the sooner, the better. And maybe if Gallery doesn’t play for 2-3 weeks, he’d be healthy and effective, and at least we’d know that, too. If he does come back healthy and good, we wouldn’t want to outright release him. I don’t know, but I do want a RT who can hold his own in pass protection so we don’t have to waste TEs babysitting a player at that position who isn’t good in pass pro.

Missed the chat this morning but was hoping you might answer a question for me: What gave you the impression that Carroll was refering to a schmeatic change rather than personnel (Gallery) when talking about the offensive line and adjustments than need to be made?

    Also, how was golf?

  3. Dukeshire: That’s my sense, based on watching Gallery the last three games and the personnel available on the roster. But that’s speculative on my part and I certainly could be wrong.

BobbyK: I think they would keep Carpenter at right tackle unless an injury forced him to move back to left guard. But one of the reasons they drafted him was for his versatility, and I think he could slide to left guard and form a powerful tandem on the left side with Russell Okung for Seattle for years to come.

  4. Dukeshire says:

    Thanks E.

I actually think Carp may indeed move to LG, which is something I would have rejected 2 months ago. But after watching him play (and how heavy his feet appear to be) I actually think it may be his better position. Far less lateral movement (not a strength of his) and more anchoring in pass pro and straight ahead strength in the run (these are strengths of his). But we’ll see.

  5. So you think they will keep him at RT for the rest of this season and then make the change in the off-season if, indeed, they decide to have him to into ’12 as the starting LG?

  6. Audible says:

I think we need to trust that Tom Cable knows what he’s doing with the OL. Gallery will lose his job, Carp will move to LG, and we’ll draft another RT, if that’s what Cables wants to do.

  7. Yeah, Duke those heavy/slow feet scare me on the edge, even if it’s “only” from the RT position. His mauler type of skill set is so much more suited, we’re seeing week after week, for playing in confined areas (guard) as opposed to being on an island (when the TE doesn’t have to babysit) with pass rushers coming from the edge. No amount of experience is going to allow him to be a great pass protector with feet that heavy/slow, whereas those “quick” feet aren’t as important on the interior.

  8. They may even go with LT Okung, LG Carpenter, C Unger, RG Moffitt, and then sign a veteran to play RT. I wouldn’t be opposed to that either. You’d have 4-5 of your OL as young guys and the guy on the outside as a veteran. That makes so much more sense than having a LG as your veteran if you’re building long-term continuity. This Gallery signing was a bit more weird b/c he was going into the middle and we all knew he had only a few years left (which he is on empty right now, by all appearances) which would throw the whole continuity thing out the window again in ’12 or ’13 (when we were supposedly ready to make our run and a reason Matt, seemingly, wasn’t brought back).

  9. Dukeshire says:

    Bobby – My thoughts exactly.

  10. Still not sold on Gallery or Cable
